  1. @kcarr2015 @crowbriarhexe Related: Rapa Nui. Pretty good movie about the end of that culture, by the director of Waterworld imdb.com/title/tt0110944/

"Ironically, while the film was trying to send an ecological message, it was, on the contrary, the trigger for a real disaster on Easter Island. Because by overpaying the natives 40 $ / day during the shooting, the film made some indigenous people addicted to the western consumer society way of life. After the release of the movie, mass tourism industry began to roll on the island. 20 years later, Easter island is crumbling under rubbish and does not know how to get rid of it."

  5. @moira @mxchara Yeah fair point, thanks for sharing. I certainly could have done without a lot of the parts that were problematic from a gender perspective, but that sort of thing doesn't typically ruin a movie for me. (Sometimes it would. Depends on how bad it is.)

I felt like Waterworld took a kinda nonsense premise and created a relatively coherent story from it - like, for the most part, if I overlook the lack of realism in a fully water-covered world, it does make some sense to me why the characters were making the decisions they did and why events were happening as they did in Waterworld, whereas in Solarbabies I couldn't fathom why most things were happening. That's probably the biggest factor for me personally, at least when comparing these two movies.

Granted, that's because all the stuff that would make a movie actually good was missing from both 😅

  15. @mxchara 🎉 yeah honestly not bad this week

(I mean the viewing experience, not the movies of course)

(although actually Waterworld was kinda fine compared to our usual fare)

  20. P.S. the implication being that it has been long enough for a previously glacial mountain peak to begin to erode, develop a soil layer and a beach, and grow trees. So, a pretty darn tootin' long time.

I'm sure they rigorously considered all this in the making of the movie. /s
