  1. I smelled something dead when I was in and around the garden this morning. Wind was carrying the smell up from the water. It was about a 3-4 foot long dead carp. Probably well past 50lbs / 25kg when it was alive.

VOLOS, #Greece (AP) — "More than 100 tons of dead fish were collected in and around the port of #Volos in central Greece after a mass die-off linked to extreme weather fluctuations, authorities said Thursday.

"The dead #FreshwaterFish filled the bay 320 kilometers (200 miles) north of #Athens, and nearby rivers. Water levels were swollen by #floods in 2023, followed by months of #SevereDrought.

"The die-off has hit local businesses along the seafront, reducing commercial activity by 80% in the past three days, according to Volos’ Chamber of Commerce.

"Fishing trawlers have been chartered by the regional authorities, along with earthmovers, to scoop the dead fish out of the sea and load them onto trucks bound for an incinerator.

"The fish came from #LakeKarla in central Greece, a body of water drained in the early 1960s and restored in 2018 to combat the effects of drought.

“'There are millions of dead fish all the way from Lake Karla and 20 kilometers (12 miles) eastward,' Anna Maria Papadimitriou, the deputy regional governor of the central #Thessaly area, told state-run television.

"'Right now, there is a huge effort underway to clean up the millions of dead fish that have washed along the shorelines and riverbanks … an effort that involves multiple contractors,' she said.

"Water levels rose abruptly in fall 2023 during a #DeadlyStorm that caused extensive flooding in central Greece, but have since receded due to low rainfall and successive summer #heatwaves ."

  7. Dataset on the 6-year radiocesium transport in rivers near Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant

    by Keisuke Taniguchi, et al.
    Published: 15 December 2020

"Radiocesium released from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (FDNPP) and deposited in the terrestrial environment has been transported to the sea through rivers. To study the long-term effect of riverine transport on the remediation process near the FDNPP, a monitoring project was initiated by the University of Tsukuba. It was commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in June 2011, and was taken over by the Fukushima Prefectural Centre for Environmental Creation from April 2015. The activity concentration and monthly flux of radiocesium in a suspended form were measured in the project. This provides valuable measurement data to evaluate the impact of the accidentally released radiocesium on residents and the marine #environment. It can also be used as verification data in the development and testing of numerical models to predict future impacts."

  8. Landside #tritium leakage over through years from #FukushimaDaiichi nuclear plant and relationship between countermeasures and #contaminated water

    by Katsumi Shozugawa, et al.
    Published: 16 November 2020

"There has been tritium groundwater leakage to the land side of #Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plants since 2013. Groundwater was continuously collected from the end of 2013 to 2019, with an average tritium concentration of approximately 20 Bq/L. Based on tritium data published by Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO) (17,000 points), the postulated source of the leakage was (1) leaks from a contaminated water tank that occurred from 2013 to 2014, or (2) a leak of tritium that had spread widely over an impermeable layer under the site. Based on our results, sea side and land side tritium leakage monitoring systems should be strengthened."

Video: Thousands Of #DeadFish Mysteriously Wash Up On Japan Beach, Officials Stumped

The fish washed ashore in Hakodate on Japan's northernmost main island of Hokkaido on Thursday morning, covering a stretch of beach about half a mile long.

    December 10, 2023

"Thousands of tons of dead fish including sardines and mackerel washed up on a beach in northern Japan, leaving officials stumped. According to Metro, the fish washed ashore in Hakodate on Japan's northernmost main island of Hokkaido on Thursday morning, covering a stretch of beach about half a mile long. After locals started collecting and selling the fish, officials posted a warning urging residents not to consume the fish.

"Though the exact cause behind the mysterious incident is not known, experts have suggested some probable reasons. There has been speculation that the release of treated radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear plant could be the reason."
