  1. Moment of truth. No rain for ~2 months, and this afternoon they predict 80% chance of rain. Will it actually rain and help the fight against the wildfires? I wouldn't mind if it also took the smoke out of the air. #Okanagan #BC #Wildfires

  2. Red sky at night, red sky in the morning, not certain what it used to mean. One of them was a sailor's delight.

But nowadays it means I'm in the middle of forest wildfire season and the sky is full of smoke.

    • rain in June 2026: 21.3 mm
    • rain in July 2026: 0.5 mm
    • rain in August 2026: 0.0 mm

(0.5 mm is approximately the thickness of a business card or a guitar pick.)

I suspect the 60% chance of rain in the forecast for next weekend will change to 0% in the next few days.

  3. Visitor to the front yard. He's been coming by for about 2 months now. Snacking on what remains of my grass and rose bushes. #Okanagan #WestKelowna #Wildlife #Deer

  4. Only 6pm, and it is dark outside like it is mid-December.

    So. Much. Smoke... #Okanagan #WestKelowna

  5. We've been at "stage 3" water restrictions for a while now due to the hot, dry weather. No rain for several months.

My lawn is dried up yellow grass. It sounds like rice krispies when I walk on it.

Only good thing is I don't have to mow. And presumably my water bill will be much lower at the end of summer. #Okanagan #WestKelowna

  6. Received an e-mail from Central Okanagan Emergency Management about the wildfire situation. E-mail subject line is:

Bald Range Wildfire Information Update Updated

    "Update Updated"?

    Next e-mail will be:

Fwd: Fwd: Forward: Fwd: You'll never guess this one!!1!

  7. Chart on the left is what a typical sunny day looks like with the solar panels. 54 kWh produced by 18 panels on my roof.

Chart on the right is today (Aug 8), with no clouds, but very heavy layer of smoke in the valley from all the wildfires. Only 28 kWh gemerated. #SolarPanels #Okanagan #Wildfires

  8. I’m thinking about the thousands of people in the Summerland area who are facing the nightmare of having to leave their homes because of wildfires.

We're also seeing incredible courage from firefighters and first responders who are putting themselves on the line to protect the people and places we love. They have our deep gratitude.

B.C. has now declared a state of emergency. If you’re in the province, see emergencyinfobc.gov.bc.ca/ for the latest updates.

  9. THE HBC BRIGADES: CULTURE, CONFLICT, & PERILOUS JOURNEYS
In 1826, and later in 1831, the historic HBC Brigdes made their way north from Fort Okaogan, following their old trail to Kamloops and on to #FortStJames. #TheHBCBrigades #Okanagan #Journeys #WAHistory #BCHistory nancymargueriteanderson.com/br

  10. I'm so pissed. Fires have been increasing in this area for the past 23 years, ever since the big Kelowna Firestorm in August 2003.

We've known for a long time that climate change is a thing. At first we were calling it global warming. Introduced in a 1975 paper, then in the news starting in 1988.

    And we've done almost nothing.

Stop building pipelines across the country! Stop pumping oil, and instead pump more funding into wind, solar, and electric cars. Find ways to convince companies to allow their employees to work from home instead of sitting in traffic every day while vehicles burn fuel.

And tax the rich with their private jets and massive carbon footprints.

What will it take for our politicians to do something?

The number of fires and evacuations near me is astounding. Over 230 homes burned so far in the last few days.

And tonight it is getting worse.

A fast-moving wildfire has destroyed about 230 homes in an Indigenous community in western #Canada. The chief of the #Okanagan Indian Band says the Bradley Creek wildfire devastated much of the reserve near Vernon, about 440 kilometers (275 miles) northeast of Vancouver.

  12. Preliminary numbers are in. This is on the west side of Lake Okanagan, along Westside Road, on the Vernon side of the lake.

Current estimate is 230 homes destroyed.

  13. Two days ago we had very strong wind which cleared the valley of all the smoke.

Yesterday, the smoke came back with a vengeance. Summers in the Okanagan. :(

Wish companies and governments took climate change seriously. #Okanagan #Kelowna #ForestFires

  14. THE HBC BRIGADES: CULTURE, CONFLICT, & PERILOUS JOURNEYS
South of #Kamloops, the outgoing HBC brigades made their way south through the Grand Prairie, and passing #Okanagan Lake they made their way all the way south to Fort #Okanagon, on the Columbia River. #TheHBCBrigades #Journeys #BCHistory nancymargueriteanderson.com/br

  15. Extremely smoky outside due to all the fires burning in BC. Solar panels are not doing as well compared to previous days. #Smoke #SolarPower #Okanagan
