  4. "Pride and Joy" is a song by American singer, guitarist and songwriter #StevieRayVaughan and his backing band #DoubleTrouble, released in late 1983 by #EpicRecords. It lists Vaughan as the writer, but actually it is rewritten from a 1962 record called "I Go Into Orbit" by Johnny Acey. The song was released on Stevie's debut studio album #TexasFlood (1983). "Pride and Joy" was released as Vaughan's debut #single and has become one of his most popular songs.

  5. From our magazine: I studied water. I studied rivers and tributaries and floodplains and watersheds. Hydrology was a main focus of my research. But theory is one thing, and seeing 100-year-old cypress trees laying flat on the ground, completely uprooted, is another.

  16. Let's watch Americans complain endlessly about the flood response in Texas while doing absolutely nothing to change anything or hold anyone meaningfully accountable.

People in power are not affected by complaining. People in power are not affected by peaceful protests. If they can safely ignore it, then it won't change anything.

The only way to change things is to make it so hard to abuse power that it stops being worth the effort.

  28. What Trump doesn't know, and probably cannot comprehend, is that it's been far less than 100 years since Central Texas' last hundred year flood. And as for 'nobody saw it coming', I saw a similar flood there in the late 90s, and if I still lived in Texas, I'd probably run for higher ground every damn time it thundered.

  35. Texas River #Floods After Massive Water Level Increase Overnight

by Anna Skinner, October 26, 2023

"A river's water levels in drought-stricken #CentralTexas increased dramatically overnight on Wednesday after #HeavyRains doused the region.

"Texas has suffered from severe drought throughout the summer with the water levels in many lakes, reservoirs, and rivers dropping as a result. As of Thursday, the entirety of #LlanoCounty in central Texas was suffering from #SevereDrought, with nearly 45 percent of the county battling exceptional drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor Map. 'Exceptional' is the worst classification of drought by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

"#LlanoRiver levels have remained low throughout the summer but jumped by 10 feet overnight after heavy rains pummeled the region. Parts of Llano County received at least 7.5 inches of rain through 7 a.m. local time on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) office in San Antonio and Austin. The rainfall supplemented the Llano River, which entered a moderate flood stage."
