#Tornado in central #Maine confirmed by National Weather Service

"The National Weather Service (#NWS) said a confirmed tornado was located in southern Somerset County on Wednesday.
"According to the NWS, the tornado was located over Norridgewock, about 8 miles west of Skowhegan, shortly after 3:30 p.m. The weather service said the storm was moving northeast at 20 mph.

Folks in #Maine and #NewHampshire -- rare #TornadoWatch for tonight. Make sure your devices and battery packs are charged, keep your phone on (for alerts)!
If you have battery-operated fans, make sure batteries/units are charged. It's going to be a hot and humid night, especially if one loses power!
(And yeah, I just checked to make sure the battery pack has enough wattage to run a box fan just in case... And it does!)

June 30, 2026"The National Weather Service says an #ExtremeHeat watch starting Wednesday is expected to make outdoor temperatures in the 90s feel more like 105-110 degrees.
"In Portland, the #PortlandPublicLibrary at 5 Monument Square will serve as the city's cooling center from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. (PPL will be closed on Friday.)
"On Friday, the #TroubhIceArena at 225 Park Avenue will serve as a cooling center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
"Deering Oaks Ravine wading pool and #SplashPads around the city are also open.
"The Maine Emergency Management Agency website also lists locations for cooling centers throughout the state.
"The Maine Department of Health and Human Services’ Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the following tips to protect yourself, loved ones, and neighbors during periods of high heat:
- Keep cool inside: Use air conditioning in your home, or go to an air-conditioned public place like a store, public library, restaurant or cooling center. If you can’t access air conditioning, take frequent cool showers or baths. Cool your home by closing windows and shades during the day and opening them back up at night.
- Keep cool outside: If you have to be outdoors, stay out of the sun as much as possible (or shift your activities to the early morning or evening, as long as the air quality is good), take frequent breaks from activity, and wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing, a hat and sunscreen.
- Stay hydrated: Drink more fluids than usual, even if you don’t feel thirsty, and avoid alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks if possible. Check with your doctor first if you take water pills or diuretics.
- Know the symptoms: Monitor yourself and those around you. Seek medical care if anyone experiences symptoms like muscle cramps, very heavy sweating, shortness of breath, dizziness, headaches, confusion, weakness or nausea.
- Recognize your risk: Check the Maine CDC At Risk page to see who is at greater risk for heat illness and what signs to watch out for, and learn what to do if you or someone you care for is more at risk from extreme heat.

So, first #Robin sighting in the yard today. I'll be feeding them some sterilized eggshells and "gummy worms" (dried mealworms soaked in water for 15 minutes) and other goodies. The local worms are scarce because of the temp changes.
What do robins eat?
"Robins feed on insects (especially beetles) and worms. You might notice one following you about as your dig up your garden hoping to nab a few worms as you unearth them.
Robins can also eat fruit, seeds, suet, crushed peanuts, sunflower hearts and raisins. They particularly enjoy mealworms.
Robins are natural ground feeders, so feeding trays are ideal. Make a mixture of bird seed, sunflower hearts and mealworms, sprinkle it out on a tray and wait for the robins to arrive.
As they’re such fans of mealworms, you can give them an extra helping hand by soaking dried mealworms in water, giving the robins some valuable moisture from the food."

"A spring heat wave that has brought temperatures in the 50s and 60s across much of the state for the past few days smashed a daily temperature record in Bangor on Tuesday.
"According to the Caribou office of the National Weather Service, a high temperature of 70 degrees was recorded in Bangor Tuesday afternoon, topping a daily record of 62 degrees set nearly 50 years ago. That daily high temperature record was set in 1977.
"That marks the third day in a row that the Queen City has experienced record high temperatures: A daily record high of 59 degrees was observed Monday, tying a record high set in 2016, and a daily record high of 60 degrees was observed Sunday, beating out a high of 59 degrees set in 2012.
"It is also the earliest that Bangor has ever recorded a 70-degree day in the history of record keeping, which dates back to 1925. The previous earliest recorded temperature at or above 70 degrees was on March 18, 2012, when Bangor reached 76 degrees."

The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services has issued a similar alert for #Coos, #Grafton, and #Carroll counties.
"Air quality is expected to reach levels that are considered 'Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups' due to a plume of smoke moving in from Canada.
"Those most at risk include children, older adults, people with respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, or emphysema, and anyone who is physically active outdoors. Even healthy individuals may experience mild symptoms and should consider limiting strenuous or prolonged outdoor activity during this time.
"High pressure is keeping things dry and sunny, which may allow the smoke to linger into next week, thickening into Monday.
"Looking Ahead: Maine is off to a dry start this August. Without significant rainfall soon, #drought conditions could develop, potentially affecting #crops and increasing #FireRisk.
"The 8-day forecast shows only a few chances for showers and slightly below-average temperatures, mainly in the 70s to 80s."
