I flew the #drone just now to get some snapshots of my neighbor's house under construction. I fly every 2 to 3 days to help them keep a record of construction as it happens.
Here's a photo it shot on its way back to base. That's my house in the foreground. #AQI is up to 85 now and you can see the smoke. #AerialPhotography

Although it looks like the smoke is back in the area, the #AQI is only 46 at my house right now. If it follows the regular pattern, the smoke will drift across the valley to my neighborhood before noon. I'll be keeping an eye on things. In the meantime, it smells like #smoke so I'll keep the house mostly closed up today.

I already do most of my socializing outdoors for covid reasons. 🌬
And I'm fond of taking my morning coffee outdoors when weather permits for grounding / slowing down / mental health reasons. ☕️
But now I'm making a conscious effort to simply pass more time outdoors just to appreciate the fact that I can, as it's becoming increasingly common to not have the option, what with some days being too hot ☀️, some days having unhealthy air quality due to wildfire smoke 💨, and sometimes having to take extra precaution against mosquitos because of West Nile Virus or EEE. 🦟
I can imagine a future of being constantly forced inside for health reasons - and then I hope indoor air quality standards will catch up to the need!! 😷

Every morning, I text the AQI reading from my sensor to my walking partner and let her decide if we walk. Today, the #AQI is 90 at my house. She says yes, but an hour later than our usual 7 AM.
The walk is 1.6 miles round-trip, up our gravel road and back. There are enough hills to get my pulse up so I close my watch's #exercise ring on every walk. I'd like to do it at least five days a week but between the weather and her work schedule (she works from home) it's been tough. (1/2)

Here's an interesting thing about the #Microsoft data center under construction in my town. It has SIX air quality sensors that send data to Purple Air.
I'm left to wonder why so many? Are they expecting to generate bad air? #AQI #DataCenter

And that looks like the end of the good air for today. The #AQI is already up to 160 at my house. I've got my windows closed and will not be going outdoors again. #smoke #wildfires

The high #AQI we had in Portland this week was pretty gnarly, but I’m glad I have my N99 grade mask and #eScooter so I wasn’t stuck in my house (and good air filters when I was home). I could’ve put my #eBike on max-assist, but I still would’ve been breathing harder than normal.
15 years ago I didn’t have to think about this at all, but having a (non-smoking) dad die at a very young age due to lung cancer and now regular nearby forest fires makes this a constant concern.

The AQI is bad but not *that* bad today, but I have a splitting headache and my eyes are burning. There's a new fire just to the west of us and the smoke is blowing over into the valley.
I had experienced plenty of bad AQI in the past but now I'm discovering the complexities of AQI -- smoky air, smoky smell, numbers on the chart, how I actually feel, all of which are related but not directly.
I'm irritable because I wanted to go out for a hike today. 😠

Our AQI has between 150 - 200 for the last few days. That's bad, but nothing compared to many other areas in Oregon.
I'm so happy we bought some air purifiers back in 2020. We've had them running continuously for the last couple days. It helps a lot!

@KevinFreitas Here, inside and out. I really thought the outside AQI would be higher based on the limited view, but the smoke might be thicker north of here. Who the hell knows? #AQI

And just like that, we entered the part of summer when the sky is orange and kids’ activities are strictly indoor. It becomes a yearly occurrence nowadays. Thinking about everyone impacted by the fires, not just the smoke.

I updated https://paku.app/press with Paku 7 details, which will start rolling out soon and officially launches August 24! If you write about indie apps or air quality it’s worth a look. Reposts appreciated! #aqi #airquality #ios #apps

We are experiencing dangerous levels of particulates in Western Washington air due to the atmospheric shift bringing smoke from the east in the state emergency of Spokane fires. Here's some advice and assistance for vulnerable people in our city.
