  1. What is the current advice on how to remove a #tick you discover on yourself?

(About to spend some time in areas where that's a risk, getting prepared)

  2. Cat containment - from roaming to staying at home

"Cats are a popular pet in Australia: second only to dogs, they’re found in a third of homes, with about 5.3 million felines nationally."

"Keeping cats indoors can keep them safe from harm and protect native wildlife. But how can pet owners support their furry friends in making the transition?"

"When cats catch bird flu, the virus can be deadly. One study, published by the American Veterinary Medical Association, found domestic cats infected with H5N1 had overall mortality rates of 50 to 70%."

"Keeping pets indoors, contained in outdoor enclosures known as “catios”, or on a harness, also protects native wildlife. Each roaming puss kills about 186 mammals, reptiles and birds every year, according to research by the Threatened Species Recovery Hub."

“A safe cat is an indoor cat,” says wildlife veterinarian Dr Tania Bishop. “Roaming cats already face threats from cars, snakes, dogs, ticks, powerful owls and disease. With H5 bird flu now at our doorstep, there is also a risk cats could become infected by scavenging or coming into contact with sick or dead birds.”

“Cat containment is one of those rare measures that’s a win for everyone – it’s better for cats, better for wildlife and better for communities.” >>

  3. Climate change and deer population growth are fuelling a US tick explosion

Ticks are taking over the United States. Due to climate change, changing land use, and an explosion in the deer population, ticks have been expanding their territory and infecting more people than…

    Fascinating:

"in 1998, scientists discovered something remarkable: western fence lizard blood contains a protein that kills B. burgdorferi bacteria."

"Not only does the lizard avoid infection, but the tick feeding on it is actually cured of the bacteria it was carrying."

  5. Dear Fedi citizens:
I need suggestions about how to make our place tick free. ( please read entire post before replying 🙂)
I live in an area with an infestation of disease carrying deer ticks. Outside, I use deet spray, and returning home I toss my clothing and runners in a bucket of soapy water, then I shower.
So far, I found three ticks in the bathroom, one was attached to my leg and I hadn't been outside for 2 days.
    TIA for replying😊

  6. Alpha Gal syndrome raises questions beyond diet for patients

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – For those living with Alpha Gal syndrome, avoiding red meat and dairy is often the starting point, not the finish line. As the tick-borne illness becomes increasingly common, patients are raising questions about what e…

  8. Lonestar Tick is already in N.S.

Migrating birds move incredible distances — and ticks that parasitize them travel for free. Historically, temperatures at the northern end of a migrating bird’s range have been too cold for ticks from the southern end to survive and reproduce,

Speaking of Lyme disease .. this other tick-borne illness seems pretty nasty. Maybe I’ve been under a rock, but hadn’t heard of it till yesterday. The alpha-gal syndrome (allergy to red meat and any derivative) sounds like another way the planet is trying to purge humans.

  10. Lyme disease is spreading because higher winter temperatures allow #ticks to remain active longer and survive winters in places where they previously died off.
    Why are winter temperatures rising?

  11. I wake up most mornings with some level of pain depending on 🤷🏻‍♀️ but this morning I wasn't sure if I'd be able to walk at all, much less walk Sadie.

Fortunately I know how to stretch and soothe and heat it out. But today my joints are all unusually achy. I thought maybe it's because I had all my windows open with the somewhat cooler but definitely more humid air. So I turned on the a/c.

And then I caught sight of what I thought was a mosquito bite. I am no longer certain that it was a mosquito that bit me. It looks a little tick-like. So, a visit to the urgent care tomorrow.

Another verse in the "it's the most horrible time of the year" song. 🎶

  13. There is a link between new allergies and #Lyme. I thought the eczema and sun sensitivity were due to the massive amount of doxycyline I was taking. Instead, it turns out I've developed allergies to grasses and composite flowers (just about every plant in my garden...) #ticks are abhorrent. keepsmilin4abbie.org/could-lym.
