  1. I wake up most mornings with some level of pain depending on 🤷🏻‍♀️ but this morning I wasn't sure if I'd be able to walk at all, much less walk Sadie.

Fortunately I know how to stretch and soothe and heat it out. But today my joints are all unusually achy. I thought maybe it's because I had all my windows open with the somewhat cooler but definitely more humid air. So I turned on the a/c.

And then I caught sight of what I thought was a mosquito bite. I am no longer certain that it was a mosquito that bit me. It looks a little tick-like. So, a visit to the urgent care tomorrow.

Another verse in the "it's the most horrible time of the year" song. 🎶

  11. There is a link between new allergies and #Lyme. I thought the eczema and sun sensitivity were due to the massive amount of doxycyline I was taking. Instead, it turns out I've developed allergies to grasses and composite flowers (just about every plant in my garden...) #ticks are abhorrent. keepsmilin4abbie.org/could-lym.

  16. Another use for #DuctTape and #TickControl (from the #UniversityOfRhodeIsland)

    #DeTick With Duct Tape

Excerpt: "Of the 1,001 things duct tape is good for, it is a very effective way to de-tick yourself when larvae ticks climb on. With ticks, it works best to get them before they dig in and start to feed. Lint rollers also work but duct tape is stickier (and you can probably find 5 or 10 other things to use your duct tape for). Our #TickSmart Tip for August and September is to always have sticky duct tape ready just in case of a tick swarm. Duck Brand tape even comes in an appropriate lime (#Lyme) green color!"

  21. Have you ever seen a tick via microscope? Here's your chance to see the tick that was on me earlier today.

Two photos and two animated GIF. In one of the GIF you can see it unexpectedly move like the fricking facehugger in Alien*. Anyway. I won. As is shown in the second photo.

*probably didn't help that I accidentally prepared the slide with human-safe-eyedrops instead of alcohol..

"If you're worried about ticks, put up an owl box.

The animal driving most Lyme disease in the eastern US is the white-footed mouse. Ticks that feed on them are far more likely to come away infected than ticks that feed on other animals. The bigger the local mouse population, the worse the next year's tick year.

A single barred owl pair raising chicks can take hundreds of rodents in a breeding season. Owls also don't carry #Lyme. The bacterium can't survive their digestive tract, so an owl that eats an infected mouse is a dead end for the disease.

Researchers at the Cary Institute, the leading lab on Lyme ecology have clearly stated: "Landscapes that support predators have reduced Lyme disease risk."

If you have woods or fields nearby, a properly sized barn owl or screech owl box is one of the most useful single things you can do for tick exposure at the landscape scale. Match the box to the owl that lives near you.

The mouse is the problem, owls are the solution."

  36. Having an unexpected & surprisingly long-lasting #MECFS flare-up the past four weeks. Turns out I caught #Lyme disease. Tick (or other insect) bite, although I did not notice it. Classical ring-shaped rash. Been on high seas when standing up, with concomitant migraines for weeks. Totally exhausted and at the edge all the time.

All precautions were in place, but I just seem to get "lucky," infection-wise, these past few years. That's life.

Take care of yourselves. It's rough out there.
