  1. Healthcare workers of various types are in short supply in Canada. It’s a key reason why we have backlogs in care. Lots of jobs. The province of BC on the west coast has made it much easier for healthcare workers from the US to move there. Other provinces are working on shortening the process too.
Heard about this source helping Americans learn more about moving to Vancouver Island. There was a great show on CBC Radio’s programme White Coat, Black Art hosted by Dr. Brian Goldman on this topic, interviewing the Maffins who created helpful info and sources.
There is also a group on Discord with discussions and where questions can be answered, also started by the Maffins.

  2. "Idk, I think it's less about empathy or compassion, and more about making sure the (hopefully small) group of uncaring people who enter medicine or allied health professions are incentivised to act pro-socially.
Like, in your region, what studying conditions and working conditions are clinicians expected to tolerate? Do they receive a living wage throughout study and work? Is their livelihood for a single person or big enough they can build a household?

Do they feel comfortable being a whistleblower when something goes wrong? (Numbers-wise, mistakes will happen over time.)
How robust is the inspection or regulation? How flexible are the logistics of each sector?
How many crises at once can be weathered without change to patient care? How long will it take to build back up that 'extra' capacity / contingency margin?

Who (in what position, in which teams) is responsible (or in what order) for noticing angels of death? What about anyone with less final but still harmful motives?

How severe are the consequences for failure? How many people feel compelled to hide errors rather than remedy them? What options for remediation are accessible to all staff, including contractors?"

  3. I've had a hormonal IUS before, not a copper IUD coil.
jfc insertion is painful (but apparently not for other people??!) but not having to deal with condoms or the pill or anything? for YEARS?!

And the success rate is the highest or right up there. I think the arm implant is 1 pregnancy in 2000 couples over a year or two...? Unless that's the hormonal IUS.

ALSO THERE ARE DIFFERENT DOSES AND SIZES. If you're nulliparous (have never given birth) like me, GET THE SMALLEST, holy shit.
Why the flying fuck they bunged the massive Mirena in there, I've no fucking clue. Again: some people feel "mild discomfort" and other people do just feel some mild discomfort but not pain!

But yeah, even with the insertion pain, I'm getting an IUS again soon. It's just that damn convenient and reliable, I cannot lie.

  10. In the space of about 12 hours today, I read two achingly beautiful, heartbreaking accounts about the loss of a young child from two different physicians.

I encourage all to read both pieces:
    1) Losing Ceci by Dr. Ethan Sanford
    jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/
    and
    2) As a Doctor, I thought...Until [death] came for my son by Dr. Bonnie Chen

  11. We often ask "What if it were your child?" during times when children are hurt, killed or terrorized

Last night, as has happened EVERY year, children, families & worshippers at #AlAqsa mosque were attacked during prayers in th most holy month of #Ramadan for #Muslims & a #medical #clinic was destroyed-now unable to provide #healthcare

Press coverage is nearly nonexistent, outcry is minimal.

    Why?

What if it were your child?

  12. I was 2 days late watching the #TedLasso S3 premiere, but ready & eagerly awaiting the next #MedLasso podcast with @ETSshow & twitter's #RealDoctorT (is he on #Medmastodon yet?)

Can I ask you guys show questions here since I now avoid the hateful unregulated disinfo-spewing bird app almost completely?

Update: I bought a tiny AFC Richmond scarf for my #Grogu, which pretty much tells people everything they need to know about me! Pics to follow once it arrives! 🤣

  13. "People don't fake depression...they fake being okay"

A friend recently shared tragic news of 3 #physician #suicide at her institution over 2 months

    #MentalHealthMatters for everyone

    Young patients #kids #teens are also struggling everyday with #depression #anxiety #suicidality #EatingDisorders

It shouldn't take 3 #suicides for us to understand that we should be kind & accommodating

  14. I have learned to adjust my calming end of the day reflection from

    “Tomorrow will be better”

    to

“Tomorrow might be just as difficult, but tonight is for recovery to be able to face the challenges tomorrow, God willing"

I think it helps to be realistic with expectations, but also to maintain resilience when situations cannot be controlled.

  15. What happens when kids ask this pediatrician if eating seeds can make a watermelon grow in their stomach? 😳🤣

Check out the 200th episode of "But Why? A Podcast for Curious Kids" from #NPR #VermontPublicRadio because kids ask the darndest things!

  16. Adherence (or lack of) to surgical antibiotic prophylaxis guidelines will always depend on lots of local factors.

Neverthelsss, headline figure (59% 👎) and scale of these data (825 hospitals & 521,091 surgeries) is impressive!

  17. Can someone direct me in where to find state laws on prescribing #stimulants? I am specifically interested in #Kansas requirements for #prescribers to follow.

This shouldn't be so hard to find, but I've tried all the search terms I can think of and can't find how often patients need to be seen, if there is a difference between in person vs telehealth visits, and other issues.

  18. Surgical antibiotic prophylaxis often follows a one size fits all approach in each hospital.

But what happens if patients are known to be colonised with antibiotic resistant organisms? Useful guidance from ECCMID 👇

  19. Prostate infections always best avoided. Makes this paper in CID interesting:

Before a prostate biopsy, a rectal swab to look for resistance and changing prophylaxis (especially to detect ciprofloxacin resistance) looks beneficial - less infections post-biopsy.

  20. Now is a great time to remind any family members to get their #COVID bivalent boosters and make sure your kids get vaccinated too!

Winter is long and the viruses are getting tougher.
