  1. Healthcare workers of various types are in short supply in Canada. It’s a key reason why we have backlogs in care. Lots of jobs. The province of BC on the west coast has made it much easier for healthcare workers from the US to move there. Other provinces are working on shortening the process too.
Heard about this source helping Americans learn more about moving to Vancouver Island. There was a great show on CBC Radio’s programme White Coat, Black Art hosted by Dr. Brian Goldman on this topic, interviewing the Maffins who created helpful info and sources.
There is also a group on Discord with discussions and where questions can be answered, also started by the Maffins.

  2. We often describe the epidemiological transition as a shift from infectious diseases to #NCDs. This analysis suggests a more useful framing: increasing returns to preventing, delaying and managing ageing-related #diseases

  4. If you'd rather call your U.S. senators instead of sending them email here's an automated tool for that:

    win.newmode.net/longcovidcampa

You can always do both - send email and call - if you have the time and energy!

Thank you for whatever action(s) you're able to do to get this research funding approved! ❤️

  5. 🚨Urgent!

You can help get more research funding for Long Covid, ME/CFS, and related illnesses!

Use the link below to email your senators and ask them to sign on to a "Dear Colleague" letter for FY27 (fiscal year 2027) which calls for "$210 million in Long COVID research funding at NIH, ARPA-H, and AHRQ"

The deadline for this action has been extended to Monday, April 20!

  6. The #clinicalTrial I've been participating in for a revolutionary new #cholera #vaccine has been published in #TheLancet, and the results are excellent.

I'm one of the data points in this article. 😉
The immunity from the new vaccine is so long-lasting that they're extending the study: they asked me to come back again in six months so they can test again to see if I still have immunity.
It's astonishing how many lives this vaccine will save.

  8. I've had a hormonal IUS before, not a copper IUD coil.
jfc insertion is painful (but apparently not for other people??!) but not having to deal with condoms or the pill or anything? for YEARS?!

And the success rate is the highest or right up there. I think the arm implant is 1 pregnancy in 2000 couples over a year or two...? Unless that's the hormonal IUS.

ALSO THERE ARE DIFFERENT DOSES AND SIZES. If you're nulliparous (have never given birth) like me, GET THE SMALLEST, holy shit.
Why the flying fuck they bunged the massive Mirena in there, I've no fucking clue. Again: some people feel "mild discomfort" and other people do just feel some mild discomfort but not pain!

But yeah, even with the insertion pain, I'm getting an IUS again soon. It's just that damn convenient and reliable, I cannot lie.

  11. So, it turns out some #pilots get tubes placed in their ears to help with air circulation through their eustachian tubes during pressure changes. From what I understand the tubes fall out at 6 months. They are inserted via small hole in the ear drum. My QUESTION: is it safe to put in tubes multiple times? Do the tiny eardrum holes scar over each time, build up and affect hearing? Is there a limit to how many times tubes can be placed in?

  12. @mattotcha
As a #familyphysician , I'd love to try an #AI assistant to help look up information on diagnosis and management. Searching #uptodate #dynamed and #pubmed is very limited and too time consuming for some cases.
Searching on #clinicalkey or #tufts university's library is horribly ineffective most of the time

  13. A lot of well meaning advice is given after orthopaedic fractures in older people.

Non weight bearing for a prolonged period can result in a person never walking again. Could we sometimes do better?

  14. Long Covid criteria points to a very broad group of illnesses and pathology. ME after covid (LCME) will be a more defined subgroup within the LC group. It will also be a more defined subgroup within the ME group.

It's not a matter of either/or. It's a matter of both, and more!

  15. Had a great day 2 days ago at the #Leidse #Ouderengeneeskunde Dagen at the #LUMC: a full day of reflecting on care for older people with 350+ GPs, elderly care physicians, #geriatricians and #nurses.

And we were lucky to have older people themselves on the front row joining in on our discussions! Thanks to all who participated!

  16. From @STAT:
"A new paper suggests a simple fix to the primary care physician shortage"

    TLDR? Have #medicare ( #CMS ) pay them more. #healthinsurance too

This has been discussed in the media and a big subject of advocacy for decades but apparently you can still publish a paper about it now.

#directprimarycare allows physicians and patients to fix #primarycare without waiting for this.

  18. Hello! Joining #MedMastodon today and here’s my #introduction !

    I’m a physician practicing #internalmedicine #geriatrics in #academia in the US - however, I’m leaving #AcademicMedicine to practice in #NewZealand in a few months!

    I have experience in #hiv & #aging , medical entrepreneurship. I often tweet about #geriatrics #medtwitter

Look forward to connecting with everyone!

  19. Therefore, here is a more lengthy #introduction:

I used to follow and learn from #medtwitter and #HITsm; I wonder if this moves now to #medmastodon? Given my #healthcare IT interest, I am particularly interested in understanding #customerneeds and providing #customervalue. On the technical side, I look for #interoperability topics and standards such as #HL7 #FHIR in the context of #eHealth, #healthcare infrastructure, and networks. For all of that, there is a need for #cloud platforms, #workflow, #processautomation, and in the long run, #LCNC.

  20. Hello #medmastodon #epitwitter #epidemiology, how does drug-resistance evolve to combination therapies? For #malaria this is a critical question, as #artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) are now used worldwide, and drug-resistance evolves to both the artemisinins and the non-artemisinin partner drugs. A first thread attempt on mastodon. 1/
