“🌵🧠 Drought can disrupt livelihoods, strain communities, increase financial stress, and deepen uncertainty. All of these are factors that may contribute to psychological distress.
📊 Yet in the U.S., the relationship between drought and suicide mortality has remained understudied. This nationwide study examined drought and suicide deaths across the contiguous U.S. from 2000–2018.
🌾 The study measured drought severity using the Evaporative Demand Drought Index and used suicide mortality data from the National Center for Health Statistics.
📈 Both firearm and non-firearm suicide mortality were positively associated with drought, especially under severe conditions.
⚠️ Severe drought was associated with higher suicide mortality across several subgroups, including older adults, women, and people living in non-metro areas, though subgroup findings were not statistically compared.
🛡️ Climate-related hazards can affect health through social, economic, and psychological pathways, not only through physical exposure. Drought preparedness should include mental health supports, rural outreach, financial stress interventions, and suicide prevention resources tailored to communities facing prolonged environmental stress…”

"Cuts to research funding, data systems, regulatory decision-making, and the scientific workforce are affecting researchers as well as the agencies, practitioners, and communities that make decisions using evidence produced by researchers. This Article explains how these changes weaken the systems that allow science to inform policy. It argues that, while federal leadership remains essential, the current system is too vulnerable to political shifts. When funding, data infrastructure, and expert capacity can be dismantled at a pace that exceeds the time they take to establish, harmful long-term effects spread across public health, environmental protection, and global scientific collaboration. We propose ways to make GeoHealth more resilient: protecting funded research from sudden disruption, strengthening legal protections for scientific infrastructure, building stronger coordinated partnerships with state and local governments, supporting more equitable international collaborations, and changing academic incentives so researchers are rewarded for public engagement and policy-relevant work."

New research involving #WorldPop scientists reveals how travel behaviour can distort health data and hide disease risks, especially in rural areas. Better local reporting could save lives.
