Reuters: Health officials turn to mobile-phone data to track Ebola spread in Congo. “Health officials battling the Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo are using anonymised mobile-phone data to map population movements and identify areas where the virus could spread next, according to the World Health Organisation and researchers working with it. The approach, which has not […]

Avoiding areas thought to be disease hotspots may actually make outbreaks worse if local case reporting is incomplete. New research involving #WorldPop scientists reveals how travel behaviour can distort health data and hide disease risks, especially in rural areas. Better local reporting could save lives.

Idyllic rural NSW is a hotspot for motor neurone disease
"Our recent mortality paper shows that if you live in rural and regional Australia, you are 40 per cent more likely to die from motor neurone disease. This cannot be genetic."
"Much attention will be focused on MND hotspots which include regional centres such as Griffith, Leeton, Wagga Wagga and Narrandera in the Riverina where rates of the degenerative illness are estimated to be five to seven times the national average. Other areas of concern include Tamworth, Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie." >>

CIDRAP Op-Ed: "Most people in our comment sections during the pandemic weren't arguing in bad faith, though some clearly were, particularly the ones implying the deaths wouldn't have mattered if the people who died were old or immunocompromised. The rest were doing something more ordinary. They were trying to locate themselves relative to a threat, which is what all of us do when we hear about a death from an infectious disease. Asking who died is a way of asking whether this is about me. We've made it too easy to answer no. …
"The risk factor staring us in the face isn't age. It’s vaccination status."

Editorial handover at Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric #Epidemiology. Outgoing Craig Morgan's editorial about "Time for Change"
https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00127-026-03166-5"[...] scientific journals are the products, and therefore the intellectual property, of scientific communities."
"There are many calls for the concept of statistical significance to be retired. I regret not implementing this in SPPE."
All the best to Uli Reininghaus and the new team!

"In general, the number of measles cases is believed to be vastly underreported, in part because some communities experiencing the most severe outbreaks have less contact with public health agencies."

#SorrySlow 😅The team assumes that their register offers a TRUE estimate of the prevalence of #multimorbidity for everyone living in Stockholm since 2017.
[plausible, but could have been clearer for me]Based on this, they separate different data sources and can show that without #PrimaryCare data, prevalence would be underestimated by around 20%.

Researchers evaluated two experimental Zika virus vaccines to understand the roles of antibodies and T cells, discovering that long-term viral protection requires a coordinated immune response from both components rather than relying on T cells alone.

It is a uniquely humbling experience to realize that the microscopic apex predators of epochs past are merely sleeping beneath the ice, wholly indifferent to the passage of human history. The concept of a "zombie virus" might initially sound like the sensationalized plot of a science fiction novel, but—

Zoonotic spillover is the successful transmission of a pathogenic entity—such as a virus, bacterium, or parasite—from a non-human animal reservoir into a human population. This rare but consequential event occurs when a pathogen successfully crosses the strict biological boundary between species.

This multinational study describes the development and validation of a diagnostic tool (EMERALD) -- a miRNA panel designed to differentiate persons with (or at risk of) #esophageal adenocarcinoma, from non-disease controls. The diagnostic potential of the panel was assessed using #machineLearning models. The findings suggest that it could serve as a #liquidBiopsy and facilitate screening in high-risk persons.

In acknowledgement of #WorldTBDay, I wanted to share this article I enjoyed:
https://harvardpublichealth.org/disease/tb-not-covid-19-is-the-plague-of-the-century
For those in more privileged parts of the world, tuberculosis (TB) might not be so visible, but TB remains one of the most deadly infectious diseases worldwide.
Especially with drug resistant TB strains constantly evolving, mitigating further TB burden should be an urgent priority.
