Idyllic rural NSW is a hotspot for motor neurone disease
"Our recent mortality paper shows that if you live in rural and regional Australia, you are 40 per cent more likely to die from motor neurone disease. This cannot be genetic."
"Much attention will be focused on MND hotspots which include regional centres such as Griffith, Leeton, Wagga Wagga and Narrandera in the Riverina where rates of the degenerative illness are estimated to be five to seven times the national average. Other areas of concern include Tamworth, Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie." >>

Researchers evaluated two experimental Zika virus vaccines to understand the roles of antibodies and T cells, discovering that long-term viral protection requires a coordinated immune response from both components rather than relying on T cells alone.

Big Picture Science for May. 11, Preventing Future Pandemics
We may not want to think about another pandemic, but, as epidemiologists say, it is once again a “when,” not “if,” scenario. For his latest book, journalist Jon Cohen, who has written extensively about infectious disease for the magazine Science, interviewed top epidemiologists around the world and followed virus hunters into damp and daunting bat caves to assess our pandemic preparedness readiness. Jon and Molly sit down before an audience in Los Angeles to talk about worrisome cuts to science funding and our ability (or inability) to be vigilant and respond quickly to emerging disease. There is good news: we know how to stop outbreaks. The question is, will we put our tools and vast knowledge to use?

2025 marks the 70th anniversary of the approval of the polio vaccine in the U.S. In acknowledgement, here is my in-depth commentary, 'Virus, Vaccine, & Song.'

Jonas Salk & Albert Sabin came up with polio vaccines; neither got the Nobel. Why? And how did the polio vaccine inspire a #Disney song?

Well crap, only 9 cases of Hyperglycemic Ketosis due to Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome #HKCHS in our population out of over one hundred Diabetic Ketoacidosis #DKA cases. Well, on second thought, either one sucks for the individual but I can't get good predictive models with nominal logistic regression and 9 outcomes.
There I thought we had a crack at understanding cannabis and #t1d in this dataset! Still, we can look at cannabis use as a predictor anyway!

Interesting report on #Mpox #virus:
(AKA #MonkeyPox or #MPXV)"We monitored SARS-CoV-2 & MPXV genomes in the air... in Madrid nightclubs... in 2022.
...
MPXV in the air had increased considerably on Aug 8, with 57% of positive samples containing more than 100 genomes per [cubic meter]; this date coincided with the peak incidence of mpox in Spain."The authors suggest that air sampling might be a useful surveillance method.
