  1. Reuters: Health officials turn to mobile-phone data to track Ebola spread in Congo. “Health officials battling the Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo are using anonymised mobile-phone data to map population movements and identify areas where the virus could spread next, according to the World Health Organisation and researchers working with it. The approach, which has not […]

  11. Idyllic rural NSW is a hotspot for motor neurone disease

"Our recent mortality paper shows that if you live in rural and regional Australia, you are 40 per cent more likely to die from motor neurone disease. This cannot be genetic."
"Much attention will be focused on MND hotspots which include regional centres such as Griffith, Leeton, Wagga Wagga and Narrandera in the Riverina where rates of the degenerative illness are estimated to be five to seven times the national average. Other areas of concern include Tamworth, Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie." >>

  12. It is a uniquely humbling experience to realize that the microscopic apex predators of epochs past are merely sleeping beneath the ice, wholly indifferent to the passage of human history. The concept of a "zombie virus" might initially sound like the sensationalized plot of a science fiction novel, but—

  13. Hemodialysis patients with blood type A exhibit significantly lower risks of both all-cause and cardiovascular mortality compared to those with other blood types. This finding directly contrasts with the general population, where blood type O is typically associated with the lowest risk of cardiovascular disease.

  22. #Mpox #Epidemiology & #Risk #Factors, #Nigeria, 2022, Emerg Infect Dis.: wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/30/9

Odds of being mpox+ were higher for adults with #HIV & lower for those co-infected with #varicella zoster virus (VZV). No #children were HIV+; odds of being mpox+ were higher for children with VZV infection. Our findings indicate mpox affects primarily adults in Nigeria, partially driven by sexual activity; childhood cases were driven by close #contact, #animal exposure, and #VZV co-infection.

  23. Another reason not to drink raw milk: H5N1 bird flu has infected cattle in the US and its RNA has made its way into store-bought milk, but the heat treatment of pasteurisation has likely killed the virus. In raw milk, the virus will be intact and able to infect.

🦠 #RNA Viruses in Ticks that Feed on Farm Animals 🐮

In addition to the above studies ☝️, another one looked at the #virome of ticks that feed on livestock in Uganda.

    • Analyzed 2,754 ticks from 31 farms.
    • Used semi-agnostic sequencing to detect all known #virus families.
    • Found 22 viruses from 9 families, of which 5 were novel!
    • Orthonairoviruses were notable, including Crimean-Congo Fever virus & a novel one.

🦠 RNA Viruses in Ticks — Ticks that Feed on Bats! 🦇

In addition to the above studies ☝️, a new study looked at the #RNA #virome of ticks— specifically ticks that feed on bats in Sweden.

    • Found 16 viruses from 11 #virus families, of which 15 were novel!
    • Authors suggest that such surveillance might help identify potential zoonoses.
