  1. Receiving the shingles vaccine to prevent the reactivation of the Varicella zoster virus is associated with a significantly reduced risk of developing dementia in older adults. An epidemiological study observed up to a 24% lower risk of dementia over four years among vaccinated nursing home residents.

  3. Bird Flu is here and it is likely about to go exponential.
Though, it doesn't hurt to hope its a fizzer , right ?

    Avoid Record and Report.

    Snaffled from CDC site::

H5 bird flu (H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b) has been detected in wild birds in Australia... At this stage there is no evidence of spread to other wildlife or poultry in Australia.

    ...

The risk to people in Australia is currently considered low.[1] Bird flu does not easily infect people.[1] This strain has not been reported in people here.

People should take simple steps to protect themselves against bird flu.

    [And their fellow travellers]

If you notice sick or dead birds or other animals:

Avoid the area – do not touch them
Record your location and what you see...
Report this information to the 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
    (Australia only)

The #model shows that while eating human #meat provides calories, the epidemiological costs of disease transmission quickly outweigh any benefits and lead to #community collapse.

  9. Does anyone in public health/epidemiology know about how likely it is that this current cyclospora outbreak is actually being caused by lettuce imported from Mexico? I'm reading from NPR about it and having trouble squaring "it's been contracted in public pools" and "not transmissible between humans". Also, why not look at new vectors if "not like past outbreaks?" Especially w a history of this admin hiding scientific reports for political reasons, and blaming Mexico. #health #cdc #epidemiology

  10. Finished listening to Virus Hunters by Amy Cherrix today. It's an excellent book for everyone, whether you are a scientist or not.

  12. Hemodialysis patients with blood type A exhibit significantly lower risks of both all-cause and cardiovascular mortality compared to those with other blood types. This finding directly contrasts with the general population, where blood type O is typically associated with the lowest risk of cardiovascular disease.

  14. A really good explanation of cyclosporiasis, the current outbreak, and why pinning down the source is so hard.
    Advise too.
"Yes, washing your produce takes care of most of it. But that is not likely to remove all #Cyclospora Cooking is what we need to do. Cook your food, people. I, for one, can do without fresh salads until this particular emergency is over. (This is just me being me, and not an official public health recommendation.)" -- By @deonandan

TITLE: Where you live could shape your dementia risk, massive study finds

    URL: sciencedaily.com/releases/2026

Researchers analyzing data from more than 214,000 people found that dementia risk factors differ widely across countries, challenging the idea of a one-size-fits-all prevention strategy. At the same time, they uncovered surprisingly consistent patterns that could help shape smarter, more targeted public health efforts.

  18. Vector ecology is the scientific study of the interactions among disease-transmitting organisms (vectors), their hosts, and the environment. Its primary goal is to understand the population dynamics, behavior, and spatial distribution of vectors—such as mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas.
