A recent study indicates that fatigue in teenage girls is strongly associated with heavy menstrual bleeding, skipping meals, and daily nicotine use, rather than iron deficiency.

@mottg @science Pulled quote from the Arxive research paper, which is 55 pages: "Five decades of U.S. litigation have disgorged hundreds of millions of pages of formerly secret business records from the TOBACCO industry, along with documents from the makers of DRUGS, CHEMICALS, FOOD, FIREARMS, and FOSSIL FUELS."
Great use of LLM technology! (1st develop with Claude, then purge Claude. Eventually, there will be no need for stolen data at all.)
Auditting the results' sources kills hallucinations.

Airborne particulate matter from North African deserts is reaching Europe in increasing concentrations, creating a rising source of air pollution that counteracts the continent's recent decline in anthropogenic emissions.

Hey so I nearly flunked bio-stats and epidemiology in college and I don't have the programs necessary to open these files. Would anyone be able to take the data on this on this page, run it, and see if there's actual statistical significance in the data that would back up the claims in this guy's substack article? Can't find anything in the visualized data either.

📕 Chuffed to pick up hardcopy of new @springernature Scabies book. Includes my chapter on managing institutional #scabies outbreaks from care homes to refugee camps: https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-031-26070-4_29. Abstract + more info➡️
Middleton et al. Scabies Management in Institutions
Abstract
Scabies is a particular problem in semi-closed institutions such as residential settings for elderly people, children and those with learning disabilities; refugee camps and other settings for displaced persons; prisons; schools; hospitals and hostels. What many of these diverse places have in common is a range of transmission drivers which enable scabies to reach very high prevalence including: high densities of potential hosts, social behaviours involving prolonged contact, bed and clothes sharing, manual handling, reduced access to laundry facilities and immunocompromise. We describe the epidemiology of institutional scabies outbreaks across settings, and based primarily on recent and longstanding evidence from adult health care, we draw out general strategic priorities for case management and outbreak control. The tools and information necessary to carry out an epidemiological assessment of an institutional scabies outbreak are provided, along with guidance on control measures. A summary checklist of the key steps to take in responding to an institutional outbreak concludes the chapter.Thank you to @nihrresearch for funding support.
This is part of the first comprehensive book on scabies, written by experts from across the world. You can order the full 31 chapter ebook and hardback for your uni/clinical library here: https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-031-26070-4

There is currently much interest in the role of Artifical Intelligence (AI) in medicine, particularly in specialties involving visualization such as upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, which is important in screening and diagnosis of esophageal and gastric cancer. This report provides a readable summary of the approach and recent results of its clinical application in detecting malignant and premalignant lesions.

This unusual review involves a qualitative analysis of professionals' views on the justification for systematic screening for esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC), a topic of some controversy. Professionals are increasingly supportive of targeted screening (as opposed to population screening), driven by the introduction of less invasive screening methods and the potential for effective treatment of detected neoplasia.

This study combines questionnaire data and automated cytological evaluation of sponge-collected cells to accurately identify high-risk individuals without the need for endoscopy. It uses machine learning to identify abnormal cells and create automated risk scores that are equivalent to those of experienced cytologists. This approach could potentially reduce the number of endoscopies needed to screen the population by around 90%.

Radio frequency ablation (RFA) has become a standard of care for persons with advanced dysplasia in Barrett's, but little is known regarding the occurrence and predictors of post-procedure symptoms. This study found that RFA treatment caused considerable post-procedural symptoms of significant duration in the vast majority of patients, with almost all patients experiencing pain and dysphagia after the procedure.

In acknowledgement of #WorldTBDay, I wanted to share this article I enjoyed:
https://harvardpublichealth.org/disease/tb-not-covid-19-is-the-plague-of-the-century
For those in more privileged parts of the world, tuberculosis (TB) might not be so visible, but TB remains one of the most deadly infectious diseases worldwide.
Especially with drug resistant TB strains constantly evolving, mitigating further TB burden should be an urgent priority.

While statistics tell us the proportion of #Indigenous people with cancer who die is increasing, the reality is likely worse.

The incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma rose rapidly for over 40 years before leveling off after the turn of the century. The highest incidence is in white males, who experienced a 10-fold increase. Recent data from NCI's SEER registry system suggest that rates may be starting to climb again in this demographic group.
