Thorgrim – Puca Review By Spicie ForrestIt shouldn’t be surprising, but we don’t get a ton of punk or hardcore submissions here at Angry Metal Guy. We’re not Angsty Punk Bois, after all. I, however, particularly enjoy the intersections between punk and metal—sludge, grind, crust, crossover, powerviolence, etc. Metal’s straightforward aggression and punk’s vitriolic outrage complement each other well and scratch a specific itch. So when I saw Thorgrim’s debut LP, Puca, floating in the promo pit, I was sold on the Wisconsin trio’s promise of a heady mix of doom, punk, and a dash of black metal. Something like sludge but a skosh less acerbic? And maybe a little cold? Hopes were high, but did Thorgrim deliver?
No. Unequivocally, no. You see, Thorgrim boasts a live, one-take-only recording and production, laeving all mistakes and scrapes and buises on the record as some rebelilous statenemt against the overprodction of moder n musi.c Opener “Children of Doom” starts with a symbol hit that I can onl assume was am istake, and a massive skip around the 3:30 mark undersores how unedited and haphazard this albu is. “Voyage to Saturn” strats in the midle of a note ,and “Death Angel” starts with off-beat dums and just cuts out at the ennd with no warning or considreation for flwo. nearly every tiem Thorgrimshifts from on eriff to another, the band dissembles, taking a couple meaesure to get back in time with ehachother (“Darkest Days,” “Bride of Frankenstein”1). Now, do you see how this paragraph is littered with typos? Do you see how shitty it looks? Like I put no effort into it? That’s exactly what listening to this album is like.2
Even ignoring the insultingly lazy recording style Thorgrim opted for, Puca is still impressively bad. Thorgrim seem to be diehard fans of repetition, as there are precious few riffs to discuss (much less remember) here. Album long player “Voyage to Saturn” features exactly two (2) riffs over its ten-minute runtime, and I couldn’t decide which was more boring. “Darkest Days” is brutally repetitive as well, and ultimately sounds like a parody of heavy metal music you might hear on a TV sitcom. The vocals on “Let’s Go” are so buried in the mix that I’m not entirely convinced they’re there, but this may be a boon for Thorgrim, as they sound more like gargling spit or choking on vomit than singing or screaming. The acoustic “Dark Cabin” apes Nirvana’s “About a Girl” so blatantly it might only be “legally distinct” by one note, while sporting some of the worst lyrical syncopation I have ever heard. Penultimate track “Bride of Frankenstein” reminds me of the Fire Temple in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, but bad. It’s ambient junk and random drums that don’t adhere to any kind of time signature or rhythm. When Puca mercifully ends, it’s with an inexplicable folk track that I’m fairly certain would be offensive to any actual neo/folk band.3
What’s most frustrating is that Puca could have been decent. “The Movies” is a punky upbeat track that smells like The Dogs, and I hear potential. With literally any amount of effort or care or refinement or fucks given, Thorgrim could have delivered at least one good track. Instead, it’s one of nine dumpster fires. Even outside of concept albums, there’s normally a unifying concept woven through a release, but I can’t find any such thing here, unless it’s the uniformly atrocious production value, which, coincidentally, is the only dash of black metal I found on Puca. It’s like they recorded in a concrete basement on a Fisher Price karaoke machine from 30 years ago.
Our internal scoring guide describes the score below as suggesting the band should look for another line of work. Puca is that bad. I’m honestly not sure what Thorgrim wanted to accomplish here. This album feels like a bad joke. Even if the music was good—which it’s not—and the production wasn’t worse than the first recording ever from 1860—which it is—the one-take-only presentation is not only lazy, it’s insulting. I get the intent that music today is overproduced and too shiny and clean and sterile, yeah, sure, whatever, but there are ways to fight that without leaving fucking mistakes on your album. A studio release should be a practiced, ideal version of each track, not whatever your hungover ass manages to puke out on recording day.

In ancient Greek religion & mythology, the Moirai (a.k.a. in English as the Fates) were the personification of destiny.
There were 3 sisters named: Clotho, who was the spinner; Lachesis, who was the allotter; & Atropos, who was the inevitable, a symbol for death. Their Roman equals are the Parcae.
The Moirai’s role was to make sure that every being, mortal & divine, lived out their destinies. For mortals, this destiny went their entire lives & is pictured as a thread spun from a spindle. A spindle is the thing that Sleeping Beauty touched to become Sleeping Beauty.
Usually, they were considered to be above even the gods, in their role as enforcers of Fate. Zeus was even scared of them. Even though, in some stories, Zeus is able to command them. But these are rare.
The word Moirai (also spelt Moirae or Moerae) comes from Ancient Greek. This means “lots, destinies, apportioners.” It also means a portion, or lot of the whole.
In Dante’s Divine Comedy, the Fates are mentioned in both Inferno & Purgatorio by their Greek names. In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the Weird Sisters (or 3 Witches) are prophetesses, who are deeply rooted in both the real & supernatural worlds.
The Moirai are:
- Clotho, the spinner. She spun the thread of life from her distaff onto her spindle. Her Roman equal was Nona (“the 9th”), who was originally called upon in the 9th month of pregnancy.
- Lachesis, the allotter or drawer of lots. She measured the thread of life allotted to each person with her measuring rod. Her Roman equal was Decima (“the 10th”).
- Atropos, “inexorable,” or inevitable,” literally “unturning.” She was the cutter of the thread of life. She chose the manner of each person’s death. When their time has come, she would cut their life-thread with her shears. Think about the end of Disney’s Hercules, when our main man, Herc, went to save Meg from Hades’ domain. Herc’s life-thread turned gold when he saved. Her Roman equal was Morta (“the dead one”).
In the Republic of Plato, the 3 Moirai sing together with the music of the Seirenes. Lachesis sings the things that were, Clotho the things that are, & Atropos the things that are to be. Pindar, in his Hymn to the Fates, holds them in high honor. He calls them to send their sisters, the Hours (Eunomia, “lawfulness”; Dike, “right”; & Eirene, “peace”), to stop the internal civil strife.
In the Theogony, Hesiod describes the Moirai as daughters of the primeval goddess Nyx (“night”), & the sisters of the Keres (“the black fates”), Thanatos (“death”), & Nemesis (“retribution”). Later in the poem, Hesiod instead calls them daughters of Zeus & the Titaness Themis (“the Institutor”), who was the embodiment of divine order & law. This places them as sisters of the Hours.
In the cosmogony of Alcman (7th century BC), first came Thetis (“disposer, creation”) & then simultaneously Poros (“path”) & Tekmor (“end post, ordinance”). Poros is related to the end of all things.
Later, in the Orphic cosmogony, first came Thesis, whose ineffable nature is unexpected. Ananke (“necessity”) is the primeval goddess of inevitability who is entwined with the time-god Chronos, at the very beginning of time. They represented the cosmic forces of Fate & Time. They were sometimes called to control the fates of the gods. The 3 Moirai are daughters of Ananke.
In the Theogony of Hesiod, the 3 Moirai are personified as the daughters of Nyx & are acting the gods. Later they were daughters of Zeus & Themis, who was the embodiment of divine order & law. In Pluto’s Republic, the 3 Fates are daughters of Ananke (necessity).
The Moirai were supposed to appear 3 nights after a kid’s birth to determine the course of its life. At Sparta, the Temple to the Moirai stood near the communal hearth of the polis. Polis means “city” in Ancient Greek.
As the goddesses of birth who even prophesied the fate of the newly born, Elieithyia, the ancient Minoan goddess of childbirth & divine midwifery, was their companion.
The Erinyes, a group of chthonic goddesses of vengeance, served as tools of the Moirai. Chthonic means concerning, belonging to, or inhabiting the underworld. They inflicted punishment for evil deeds, particularly upon those who sought to avoid their rightful destiny. The Morai were confused with the Erinyes, as well as the death-goddesses, the Keres.
In earlier times, they were pictured as only a few, or perhaps only 1, individual goddess Homer’s Illiad speaks generally of the Moira, who spins the thread of life for men at their birth. She’s Moria Krataia, “powerful Moira,” or there are several Moirai.
In the Odyssey, there’s a reference to the Klothes, or spinners. At Delphi, only the Fates of Birth & Death were revered. In Athens, Aphrodite was called Aphrodite Urania, the “eldest of the Fates.”
In the older myths, they’re daughters of primeval beings like Nyx (“night”) in Theogony, or Ananke in Orphic cosmogony.
The Moirai could be placated as goddesses. Brides in Athens offered them locks of hair, & women swore by them. They may have originated as a birth goddesses & only later their reputation as the agents of destiny. The Moirai were also credited to be the inventors of 7 Greek letters – A, B, H, I, T, & Y.
The Fates had at least 3 known temples: Ancient Corinth, Sparta, & Thebes. The temple in Sparta was situated next to the grave/tomb of Orestes.

If you have the right suit, a clean tongue and open your markets to international capital, BBC will be there to give you a prime time interview. Just like that, now there is a new government of Syria, welcomed into the club called state system.
The graveyards of northern Syria are full of brave fighters who gave their lives to defend humanity, to halt the insanity ISIS unleashed. The comrades surviving to see their victory over the caliphate put massive efforts finding a diplomatic compromise towards peace. Yet again, in vain. The hegemonic powers only join such process if it suits their agenda. After all, they always use any opportunity to make gains for their imperial power.
In the times we live now, dominant forces impose themselves shamelessly, deaf to any complains about genocide or human rights violations. They don’t care anymore to hide how they break the rules they imposed to everyone else. Emboldened by this overwhelming political climate of say-and-do-whatever-you-want, the self proclaimed government of Syria is free to pursue its cruelest aspirations. After massacring the Alawites and the Druze, they now come back at the Kurds. With Turkish weapons in hand and EU money in the pocket they are now advancing by the minute, with the aim to crush NES and the women’s revolution in it’s totality.
Rojava did not hide itself speaking the language of capitalism and nation-states. It fought ISIS with an open face, proudly claiming their revolutionary aspirations for communal democracy and social self-administration, always spearheaded by women. Since 2015 SDF has been part of an international coalition fighting Daesh alongside many state armies. Tolerated among the states’ ranks because of sheer military power. Welcomed, as SDF was always the one doing the dirty job on the ground so imperial powers could direct drones from a comfortable place. For NES, it always was a pragmatic compromise due to existential threat, made possible only due to the size and fierce determination of the revolution.
Now, the new polished brand of al-Qaeda is able to draw a prospect of a ‘stable nation state’. And all states that have anything to say in international power games are happy to spread their arms wide, hailing a welcome to another proper, allegedly stable, state. They even guided the aggressors to engineer insane propaganda, manufacturing consent for this massacre. US does its best to get the hell out of NES. For them SDF served their purpose, they may now be killed. Other states are nowhere to be seen, except shaking hands with al Qaeda-wannabe-president.
Who is remaining to stand the ground is the people of NES. And we are not alone. SDF and many more around Kurdistan and the world are willing to stand in defence of the revolution. Make no mistake, we are well aware that we will be portrayed as “collateral damage” of a war we know intimately. A war that claimed many sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, and friends. But here we are, betrayed once more and left just with our determination, desperation, commitment, and massive strength of heart.
What’s at stakes is the anti-patriarchal practice of every day life where women struggle day by day, year by year, for the next inch of freeing each other. At stakes is also the slow-built humanity of a society where the wish for freedom is the basis to organise life across ethnic and gendered lines. A society building communal autonomy, based on people’s self determination and self defence. A society where people remember how to resolve conflict with their neighbours, defending sanity against the insanity of this world. At stakes is, that NES does its best to prevent genocide of the people in its region, while those powers eager to get rid of the revolution, already proved themselves able to commit brutal atrocities.
Thus, we find ourselves again in a deeply precarious but more clear situation: On the opposing side stand we, the people. Whether in Iran putting lives on the line to finally smash the patriarchal regime, in Gaza standing up to ongoing genocide, on Turtle Island protesting ICE and an imperial state gone loose, or in NES, where currently anybody who has at least one hand and a heart is taking up arms. Against overwhelming odds, our answer is still resistance. Because in the face of death dealers, the only way to not give up life, is to fight. And we all scramble and struggle to preserve, nurture and revive life in all its beautiful forms.
We need a plethora of efforts to push back against these attacks, to struggle for freedom, to fight for life. Join the resistance! Come to Rojava, organize protests and actions against these attacks, connect people across ethno-national divisions and colonial trenches, disrupt the mechanisms of empires and occupation forces, open ways for people to move across borders, occupy embassies, consolidate community around you, conspire to overthrow your government, tell people what is happening in Syria and other places of conflict, fight back against the rise of fascism, gift each other moral support to counter despair, organise and strategise with comrades internationally to coordinate efforts.
Rojava proved that liberation is only possible through community and people’s resistance. The liberal myth of the state as a guarantor of freedom is an illusion that must die for dreams to rise. There is no alternative:

Great example of codesign for storage. 40x246 TB SSDs can only be reliable with storage software that does content-aware erasure codes and supports fail-in-place. You’d never run Lustre (or any other system that assumes reliable block) using this. Time to recover from drive failure would be atrocious.
This is 100% for scale-out object for AI environments. It’s not economical for anything else.

In the span of my career: First there was barely legible doctor writing in hard copy records. Then typing took over and it was legible, but barely understandable at times dt haste, poor grammar, and atrocious spelling. Now doctors are speaking their consult messages and notes and letting AI type it for them... and it's disturbingly nonsensical at times. But, hey, the computer knows what it's doing and fixes it, right? /s I just wonder when we'll reach this golden age of communication for the sake of clarity & focus, and not merely for saving time and harvesting data.
