‘Gentle, Angry Women’ retrace 110-mile march to Greenham Common in award-winning film at Showroom

‘Gentle, Angry Women’ is the latest documentary film by award-winning Cornish film company Awen Productions. The story follows three young women as they retrace the march to Greenham Common, forty years on from the first Women’s Peace Protests.
The film has just won the Celtic Media Festival Torc Award for History (Screen) and director Barbara Santi believes that, in light of current conflicts, the message of Gentle, Angry Women is more relevant than ever.

This history belongs to them, and they have a right to claim it.”
Following a sold-out premiere, the film is currently touring venues across the UK and will be heading to Sheffield in August.
Gentle, Angry Women will be screening at Showroom Cinema, Sheffield on Tuesday 4th August at 6pm. The film screening will be followed by a powerful pre-recorded Q&A with Director Barbara Santi, delving deeper into the story behind Gentle, Angry Women.
Poppy (16) joins her peers Xanthe (17) and Evie (19) on the 110-mile march to Greenham Common to uncover its lost legacy.
Along the way, they meet the Greenham Women who spent years at the peace camp, hearing their stories and prompting intergenerational conversations about the world today. The young women are passionate about a range of environmental and social justice issues, from Black Lives Matter, to climate change, women’s rights, and animal activism. Gentle, Angry Women provides a platform for connection and dialogue concerning the key issues of our time.

The protest at Greenham Common lasted for 19 years and was one of the largest women’s movements in British history. Despite this, many people have never heard of Greenham Common, including the young protagonists in Gentle, Angry Women. Even the film’s director Barbara Santi herself admitted that she didn’t previously know much about the protests.
“I belong to the generation that should have inherited and passed on these stories, yet failed to do so,” she admits. “I’m working to repair that broken chain of women’s collective memory.”
“Every woman deserves to know her own history – yet an entire generation has been robbed of the knowledge that thousands of women once lived for years in makeshift camps, facing arrest and ridicule to prevent nuclear war.”
As well as highlighting the vital role of women in the Greenham Common Peace Protests, the film has created pathways for young women in the production of the documentary itself, allowing them to thrive in technical production roles.
Santi believes that giving a platform to uplift women emulates the ethos of the film itself.
“The film champions small acts of defiance and community building as powerful forms of resistance. At its heart, this is a film about hope – about finding strength in gentle anger and discovering that the most profound changes often begin with the smallest, most personal acts of courage.”

It's important to note that this imperial hubris persists in much of the liberal & left politics of Britain. A former colleague of mine at #CND was the historian James Hinton (Univ of Warwick), who wrote very insightfully about the imperial assumptions of the first wave of CND, in the late 1950s. The anti-nuclear movement shared the militarists' sense of entitlement to outsized impact on the world.

El cascanueces impulsa tradición y consolida presencia artística
La nueva temporada fortaleció la tradición escénica y amplió su impacto cultural.

La Secretaría de Cultura del gobierno federal y el Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura (Inbal), a través de la Compañía Nacional de Danza (Cnd) y la Orquesta del Teatro de Bellas Artes (Otba), presentaron la temporada 2025 de El cascanueces. La colaboración con el Auditorio Nacional reforzó la proyección nacional del montaje. La producción ofreció una experiencia artística basada en disciplina, precisión y repertorio clásico.
La propuesta, inspirada en la versión coreográfica de Nina Novak sobre el original de Lev Ivanov, mantuvo la música en vivo como eje central de la interpretación. La solidez técnica de la Cnd se mostró en cada escena con rigor profesional. El virtuosismo consolidó el nivel artístico que identificó a la agrupación durante décadas.
Durante una conferencia de prensa realizada el 9 de diciembre de 2025 en el lobby del Auditorio Nacional, el director artístico de la Cnd, Erick Rodríguez, resaltó la relevancia histórica de la obra. Explicó que la temporada alcanzó diez funciones y acumuló 228 presentaciones desde su arranque. Indicó que la producción integró a más de 240 artistas en escena.
Nuevas interpretaciones escénicas
En la mesa participaron bailarines solistas que compartieron sus vivencias profesionales. La primera solista Elisa Ramos, con trayectoria de 22 temporadas en el Auditorio Nacional, relató su evolución desde que debutó a los diez años. Recordó que interpretó roles diversos como ratón, angelito, soldado y Clarita.
La intérprete señaló que en 2025 asumió los papeles de Reina de las Nieves y Hada de Azúcar. Expresó que cada temporada presentó retos distintos por los cambios entre elencos. Afirmó que la variación de energía mantuvo la frescura del montaje.
El solista Braulio Fernández, responsable del Cavalier, El Cascanueces y la danza rusa, explicó que la pieza abrió puertas para la formación de nuevos públicos. Comentó que el ballet funcionó como estímulo para la participación de niños interesados en la danza. Indicó que su experiencia personal mostró el impacto de ver a hombres en escena. –sn–

#glastonbury festival used to have all kinds of political speech as part of its purpose and as part of the line up. Yes it was an interruption to the music to hear Bruce Kent get up and talk about #CND, or #BillyBragg talk about #RedWedge but the festival had an alternative crowd and it was well received. They talked about the miners, and steel workers and the apartheid which was still happening in South Africa. The #BBC should have shown everything that happened on stage yesterday.

Thank you. The article states that when they are retired (most are still in service), they will have served over 40 years. I hope compelling MPs to discuss the matter will force them to quantify that cost of refurbishment and associated training, and where that money gets spent (probably mostly in the UK), and weigh that up against the benefit it would confer to Ukraine, and the other spending options that might compete for that money. I understand we're committing 5% of GDP on defence spending. I'd love to see it spent in the UK. - Timely Action: The sooner we act, the better prepared Ukraine will be.
With the UK set to dispose of these vehicles soon, we must act now to ensure they serve a greater purpose.
