  1. Arroganz – Death Doom Punks Review By Andy-War-Hall

    Once, punk ruled my heart as jealously as metal. I loved the heart-in-hand abandon and DIY ethos of acts like Rise Against, Social Distortion, Bad Religion, and Descendants,1 and though I still do metal nonetheless won out as my root genre. But punk and metal have always overlapped, and when the two offshoots of rock tango together, great things can happen.2 German death metallers Arroganz have been carrying out this uneasy marriage since 2008, dropping six testaments of metallic brutality and punkish rebellion over the years. Longtime bassist/vocalist -K- and drummer -T- are joined by the newcomer guitarist -B- for lucky number seven, Death Doom Punks, a declaration of purpose if there’s ever been one. I love the attitude, but an album can’t live by ‘tude alone. Will Arroganz’s infusion of punkish qualities into the death metal elevate Death Doom Punks, or will it merely spell death/doom for these punks?

    Other bands have put death riffs over d-beats before, but Arroganz channel early Immolation/Death through Black Flag/Discharge-like hardcore grime in a way that feels particularly vital on Death Doom Punks. Whether through blistering speeds like on “Pain Forged Armor” or diabolical groove on “Anti-Ideology,” Arroganz’s knack for aggressive and catchy riffcraft keeps a near-constant stankface plastered over my skull. Classic death metal walking riffs meet soaring doom bass leads on “Die for Nothing,” while “Death Doom Punks” marries hardcore and doom into a gloomy, potent combo that reminded me that Caskets Open exists. Songs on Death Doom Punks are brief and intentionally simple, but hear the spider-y basslines on “Earth’s Final Dose,” the gigantic belting and bass-work over “Under Scarred Skin,” or the gnarly death march of “Spirit Arsonist” and know that Arroganz supercharged everything they wrote with everything they had. Simply, Death Doom Punks is what it says it is, and it’s awesome.

    That Death Doom Punks is Arroganz’s seventh album is no surprise, as their chemistry and chops are something else. Rhythmically, Arroganz seamlessly slide into a snarling breakdown one moment on “Arsenic Breath” and throw down thrash stampedes the next on “Incubus’ Veins.” -K- is a beast of a bassist and vocalist, littering Death Doom Punks with nimble and concussive bass riffs and punk-influenced leads while bellowing throaty, acerbic condemnations of society. -B- fits Arroganz like a fingerless glove, clobbering Death Doom Punks with crushing grooves on the title track,3 gnarled and disjointed leads on “Pain Forged Armor,” and entwining leads with -K-‘s bass licks on “Arsenic Breath.” Arroganz play well together, and Death Doom Punk’s organic production and surprisingly dynamic mix make it apparent. The snare pop right, the bass warbles and clicks right, the guitar is crunchy and deep and everything sits just right in the mix. Arroganz may be no-good punks, but Death Doom Punks is clearly the product of adamant professionals and experts of their craft.

    Arroganz’s most critical success is in knowing when to switch something up. Again, Death Doom Punks’ songs are on the simple side, but Arroganz shuffle through riffs, refrains, and bridges often enough to spare the listener from boredom while affording ideas enough time to settle to save themselves from riff salad. Frequent tempo shifts electrify Death Doom Punks further, spinning “Spirit Arsonist”‘s plodding bass riff into a total death metal meltdown and opening “Die for Nothing”‘s relentless show of force in the bridge for a righteous display of bass-forward doom. Conversely, the relatively static one-two combo of “Incubus’ Veins” and “Earths Final Dose” mark Death Doom Punk’s low point. Though -K-‘s screams sound more cutting than usual on “Incubus’ Veins” and “Earths Final Dose” features some slick fills from -T-, they don’t offer as much diversity as the other tracks and feel a bit one-track as a result. But that stretch is an exception to the rule of Death Doom Punks, which is largely a wild ride front-to-back.

    Death Doom Punks sees ass, and it kicks it, no questions asked. I had never heard a lick of Arroganz before diving into Death Doom Punksthe title just sounded funny to me—but they’ve quickly made a fan of me over the weeks. The riffs are relentless. The hooks are huge. Did I mention the bass lines rock? Arroganz are simply a potent entity who know who they are and what they do well, and it comes through on Death Doom Punks. You should know it, too.

  3. Restless Spirit – Restless Spirit Review By Steel Druhm

    When one thinks of Long Island, stoner doom may not be the first musical variant that comes to mind. Restless Spirit have been out to change that since 2015, dropping several EPs and 3 long players of massive, weighty music with toes in the pools frequented by Mastodon, C.O.C., and The Sword. 2023s Afterimage was a great album crushed beneath a disastrous production that made enjoyment nigh impossible. Now comes their self-titled 4th album and a bit of a course correction. It’s a lighter, more rocking effort with a sense of brightness and wistfulness embedded in the burly, beefy sound. It’s still something entirely well-suited for a biker bar, but what Restless Spirit does is put them in the same ballpark as acts like Clutch, Fireball Ministry, and Freedom Hawk, and just in time for summer sun and outdoor beer drinking. How could that be a bad thing?

    The things I love about Restless Spirit are still here, as opening track “The Burning Need” ably illustrates. It’s slick, bluesy, hard rock in the vein of C.O.C. with big riffs and feedback backing up Paul Alosio’s big, soulful bellows. It’s groovy, crunchy stuff with balls aplenty and a chorus that really pops and sticks in the craw, and you’d be forgiven for thinking this came from some southern crew rather than 3 guys from New York. The goods keep coming on “Hallowed,” which is a bit more spacey and moody, but the hooks are there, and the riffs do most of the talking, as they should. There’s a vintage Monster Magnet vibe in its DNA, and the guitar work is quite agile and interesting, with moments of introspective melancholy effectively stirred into the brew. “Desolations Wake” is a big moment, taking a rocked-out, rowdy approach to entertainingly punchy places with hard-charging guitar work that reminds a lot of Freedom Hawk. It’s got enough machismo to put extra hair on your nethers and make you want to punch a boulder. This one is heading right to my fun in the sun playlist with a bullet.

    Unfortunately, not everything Restless Spirit attempts is a home run, and while nothing here is bad, cuts like “Red in Tooth and Claw” feel a bit more generic and safe. While the nearly 7 minutes of “Time and Distance” pass pretty well thanks to the powerhouse guitar work and forceful vocals, it does feel a bit overlong by the end. The nearly 9-minute closer, “Phantom Pain,” features a 70s psych-rock flavor that reminds me of Wino’s solo material, and the laid-back, emotive guitars pair well with the rougher, heavy riffs. But the length isn’t entirely justified, and by the 6th minute, things start to feel too stretched out. At just over 40 minutes, tracks like these make Restless Spirit feel longer than it really is, despite a good amount of interesting ideas and solid performances across the board. On the good side, the production is vastly better than last time, feeling warm and bright. The guitars have the proper weight, and the drum sound is satisfyingly deep.

    The center of the Restless Spirit universe is Paul Alosio. His riffs and emotive fretboarding provide the foundation for everything, and he’s quite adept at crafting powerful, sinuous leads that grab your attention. Since this kind of music lives and dies by the riffs, he’s the prime mover, and move you he will as he dabbles in 70s rock and borrows from the expected wellsprings like Black Sabbath and Kyuss. He pairs his leads with an effectively rough but melodic vocal approach, and he’s at his best here, delivering with gravitas and soul. Marc Morello backs him up with thick, fat basslines that rumble and quake in all the best ways, while kitman Jon Gusman pounds away with abandon and a keen sense of groove. This is a talented trio, but their mostly good works get partially undermined by occasionally inconsistent writing and a bloat outbreak on the album’s ass-end.

    Restless Spirit is a lesser creature than Afterimage and Blood of the Old Gods, but when it hits the mark, it will leave a deep impression on your ears. It’s worth checking out though, and I’m still a big believer in what the future holds for Restless Spirit. Talent abides, and spirits lurk endlessly, after all. Hail the Isle of Long!

  4. Draconian – In Somnolent Ruin Review By Kenstrosity

    Draconian is an institution. Since Where Lovers Mourn dropped 23 years ago, the Swedish death doom sextet upheld an unflappable standard of quality across seven records, marking a legendary discography matched by precious few. Everyone has their favorite out of those seven tomes, but it’s fairly uncommon to find a shared preference. This not only speaks to the diversity of Draconian’s sound despite their tried and true template, but also to the reliable nature of their compositions, capable of striking at the heart of anyone who might encounter them. I, just as susceptible to Draconian’s hooded charm, miraculously came into possession of their eighth outing, In Somnolent Ruin, albeit quite late. However, it took no time whatsoever to recognize that it was special.

    As if in celebration of their reunion with original siren Lisa Johansson, Draconian amplified both the beautiful and the beastly sides of their trademark sound for In Somnolent Ruin. Heavy as Arcane Rain Fell and A Rose for the Apocalypse (“The Monochrome Blade”) and delicate as Sovran and Under a Godless Veil (“Lethe”), In Somnolent Ruin trudges inexorably through an unknowable pall with desperate fury and earnest sorrow. A dichotomy of intensity and grace embodies this hour-long funereal march, gloom and mist gently grazing the skin as the earth churns underfoot and a clouded sky thunders above. The emotions conjured through Draconian’s gothic spell, deep ripples that oscillate between tension and release in overwhelming concentrations, black out my vision and light up my synapses. This is what Draconian is known for, and what they do so well they’ve rarely done better than on In Somnolent Ruin.

    Whereas Draconian routinely succeeds in songwriting across all of their records, In Somnolent Ruin blossoms primarily because of the striking performances it houses. Lisa and Anders Jacobsson shine here, each pouring every fiber of their being into their vocals (“The Monochrome Blade,” “The Face of God,” “Cold Heavens”). Anders sounds particularly venomous, his serrated growls and screaming rasps curdling my blood and melting my bones with every utterance (“I Gave You Wings”). Lisa belts like never before, showcasing a range and power I didn’t realize she possessed (“Cold Heavens”). Not to be outclassed, guitarists Johan Ericson and Niklas Nord shove thunderous riffs against each other and in concert with only the most bleeding-heart lead melodies (“I Welcome Thy Arrow,” “Misanthrope River”), creating a wonderful miasma of textures and tones that swirl with the deadly grace of smoke. Drummer Daniel Johansson and Bassist Daniel Arvidsson form a formidable rhythm section to bolster In Somnolent Ruin with great heft and shrewd patterns. Daniel Johansson in particular impresses with beats and fills that almost refuse to mimic Niklas’ riffs, instead forging his own path weaving in and out of the spaces between guitars and vocals with powerful muscularity. Working as a finely tuned machine, Draconian’s performance on In Somnolent Ruin is a rare coalescence that elevates every crest and crescendo beyond greatness.

    That greatness nonetheless extends to songwriting, as In Somnolent Ruin showcases some of Draconian’s coolest pieces in their discography. With no fewer than four contenders for my Songs o’ the Year playlist (“The Monochrome Blade,” “The Face of God,” “I Gave You Wings,” “Cold Heavens”), the impact of these nine songs, both isolated from and integrated with the whole, leaves nothing but dust and rubble at my feet. Emotionally devastating, richly detailed, and imposing in stature, only one word approaches adequacy when intimating my impressions: majestic. Towering arcs that connect poignant storytelling to heartfelt expressiveness personify In Somnolent Ruin’s transition from the riff-laden challenge “I Welcome Thy Arrow” to the bitter death of “Lethe.” As I traverse that arc, marvelous transitions guide my way through twists and gnarls as beautiful in form as they are lethal to the touch. Draconian created something familiar enough to caress and comfort but surprising in its vitality and charisma, such that each fresh spin feels as compelling and impactful as the first.

    I’m left astounded, alone in a clearing of brush and fog. So few discographies boast such reliable and recognizable greatness, but even fewer offer late-stage monoliths of this scale. To critique small nitpicks like the relative innocuousness of interlude “Asteria Beneath the Tranquil Sea” or the slightly less impressive “Anima” feels disingenuous—as if to do so is merely to make up for a perceived neglect of my responsibility to evaluation. Yet even accounting for this internal debate, In Somnolent Ruin is a rare triumph. A love letter to Draconian’s storied past and a celebration of their modern era, refined to staggering excellence.
