  1. body go

i often have to stop my brain
    from getting in the way
of where my body wants to go
and knows the best way down

    it sometimes feels impossible
which is why the brain must go
to leave the body to its shapes
    rediscoveries of all the flows

  3. expertise

    repetition
    with focus
    wears a groove
    restricting
    a range to a fine
    point
    sometimes masterful
    or beautiful or
    all the in-betweens
    sometimes
    simply masterful
    repetition
    without an escape
    path back home
    where cobbled ideas
    placed the first
    cobblestone
    with the why left
    lost behind the gate

  12. a fundamental conceit

    if i designed
    How Things Are
    equal and opposite
    would never need
    to 0 each other
    nor consume
    to live

    you may
    say this is
    just as the fallen
    upon the earth must
    bide their time

    but i
    say this is
    just how i would
    do things different

  14. thought you should know

    i like imagining
    sometimes calculating
    the effect of me
    moving through our space
    has

those who i love or have
    loved me but especially
    strangers as our chance
    encounters brush against
    each other sending each
    other along our ways

    but i fall up
    short of understanding
    and only hope
    we warmed a bit between
    to carry us along

  16. It’s been years since I listened

    to that song
I’ve wondered what it was called
    or how the chorus went
the words were fuzzy like mittens
in the back of the closet
what was crystal in my mind
    was the way I felt
belting it out as I drove
    with the windows down
and the wind carrying away the pressure
to be accurate so I could focus
on pouring out what was bottled up
I knew from the guitar and the choir
    clapping the beat
    just before the first words
    dropped from her mouth
that I was going back to My Church
and I was singing along with a friend
    I’ve never met

  21. confinium scientiae atque mysterii

is it more or less wondrous
    to understand the why behind
    some portion of Mystery
    we can answer?
to know why when the sky

    to stars and the sun
    blocked by a dark sphere
    makes the whole world
    silent

  23. Milestone I wasn’t aiming for

for the first time in weeks
    I spoke about her
    without crying or even
    tearing up
I was aware of grief as a friend
    occupying a guest bedroom
    and though the creaking floorboards
told me they were moving about,
I was not seeking them out,
I was waiting to talk to them
when they came to the kitchen
to share a meal and an embrace
for the first time in weeks
    I spoke about her
without having to shut the door
    on a blizzard of emotion
or be buried in three feet
of grief, isolated by a barrier
    which risks life and limb
    to cross and which risks
    insanity if one succumbs
and stops struggling to get out

  28. halyards and sheets

    i often hear routines
    repeating every day
    make life predictable
    which isn't worth living

and i have to agree or
    be condemned as boring
    even though nobody would
    believe i actually was

    trying hard to find it
    long ropes across days
    routine weaving a grip
    to help me hold through

    jumbles of accidents all
    around us even random
    invisible pieces components
awash in the sea of horizons

  30. I Am That I Am

    Was God disappointed
    that Abraham was following
    blindly without questioning
what He told him to do?

    Was He unfair in cutting
    Abraham off from direct communication
after he was preparing to do what
    God told him to do?

    Was Abraham supposed to notice
    that sacrificing one’s child
did not square with the values
of any others of God’s instructions?

    Was Abraham meant to prove
loyalty to his son – a child – over
    his God’s seemingly arbitrary
    command to commit murder?

Was God ashamed of a creature created
    in His own image?

Was the failure of the God or the man
the root of the prophet’s words to a king
generations in the future – to obey
    is better than sacrifice?

  31. grand kids

    kids many colors
    laughs and screams
    the blown-up castle
    huge soft bouncing
    off the ground
    off the walls
    and the grand dad
    who inflated it all
    stands solid smiles
    looking on memories
    looking on ahead
    at the short time
    bouncing about
    in bright colored
    castles must last

  33. For a moment, this is all there is

    time isn’t real
in the way that when you focus
    on the sunset
    everything else drops away
and the only thing you’re thinking
about is how pretty pink is when it’s fading
into orange and how if you reach out
    your hand, the little clouds
    would feel like cotton batting
and the purple drifting off to the side
would melt in your hands like cotton candy

  38. Reading the amazing collection "You Better Be Lightning" by poet Andrea Gibson.

From "Home Sick" (read the whole thing at andreagibson.org/homesick-a-pl)

If we aimed to be just half as good
as one of the earth’s mistakes,
we could turn so much around.
Our living would be seed, the future would have roots.
We would cast nothing from the garden of itself.
and we would make the thorns proud.
