    In sable night
    that lacks the stars,
    a sealed off cave.
    A man, five scars.

    The tail of night,
    a crack is heard.
    Black stone is rolled,
    a flight of birds.

    Beloved with
    her oils and herbs.
    She sees the stone
    and finds no words.

    Tree trunk, stripped bare.
    Crossbar, damp air.
    Black clouds, crows caw,
    perched on nails — gone.

    A sign, four words.
    No voice is heard.
    Cramped cave, stone bed
    where herbs lay — bled.

    Long wait, dark night.
    No candles burn bright.
    Hinted return.
    But silence — burns.

    Steel solar system
spins for a world that is gone —
    red dawn, now twilight

    i.

After the war, when housing was rare —
mostly broken down ruins with no private
toilets, no furnace, in ruinous disrepair —
tall concrete houses were built. But

their cousins across the dividing Wall
would mock those places: ugly as sin,
too spare, later covered in brown coal pall
and monotonous, like cheap soup from a tin

  5. Years ago I wrote about the values in the 4H Pledge biketoworkbarb.blogspot.com/20. Ever since then when I find a good pledge I drop it in the comments on that post. The poems make suitable reading for the Fourth of July, especially in these times. These aren't unthinking patriotism--they pledge to things like the soil in a garden and Janet Wong's "acceptance / of the views, / so different, /
    that make us America."

  6. Hard by the Alpine farmstead’s edge
    I saw a fencepost standing there —
It stood there shorn of its old fence
    and pointed skyward, unaware
of how naked it now seemed to be:
    Instead of keeping cows inside
it beckons to its lush green field
that’s dotted by gold flowers wild:
This fencepost doesn’t keep me out —
It points to a heavenly scenic route
