Neveen's husband saw the doctor. He now has a new diagnosis, osteoporosis, new treatment needs, and new debt. They have received $22 in the last week. Prices there are as high as they are here in the US. A family of 6 cannot be fed on $22, let alone purchasing more supplements to treat the osteoporosis. I provide some support, but cannot do it all by myself. Please help. Their links are in my linktree.

  3. Potentially good news for people with osteoporosis. Scientists from the University of Leipzig in Germany and Shandong University in China identified the cell receptor GPR133 (also known as ADGRD1) as being crucial to bone density. @ScienceAlert shares what they discovered after running some tests on mice:

  5. New research has discovered that a specific protein (named Piezo1) on the surface of mesenchymal stem cells in bone marrow acts as a sensor for movement and pressure. When it is activated, it promotes formation of new bone. Lack or inactivation of this protein leads to fat accumulation and release of inflammatory signals. This finding may lead to non-exercise therapies for osteoporosis.

  6. CW: Healthcare: osteoporosis treatment; brief description of administration of subcutaneous medication

Yesterday I had 2/12 Romosozumab treatments. Today I am feeling pretty puny. The headache hits so swiftly and hard that I think I need to take acetaminophen before treatment next month.

While I paced around the tiny waiting area like an uncertain heron I got to hear another nurse asking a patient if they consented to being weighed today, which is good to know that this does happen. Sitting in regular chairs is really painful right now and no one was wearing a mask, so I didn’t really want to sit.

After last month there’s a big note at the top of my chart to not weigh me, thanks to the high competency of the nurses. Despite seeing this, I was still anxious when I got there but the nurse walked me briskly past the big scale to a small treatment room where everyone had at least a procedure mask on.

I confused my nurse by using the generic name for my medication as she asked me to confirm why I was there for treatment. I gave the brand name and she laughed, saying she can’t remember the generic names for all the meds she gives patients.

Since I didn’t have a serious reaction to last month’s treatment I was free to leave once I had all my instructions about the blood work that needs to be done before my next treatment in February. My calcium and creatinine levels need to be monitored every 3 months.

One nurse attempted to give me instructions about the labs while another was giving me the two injections I receive every month. It was awkward, but I’m proud of myself for loudly saying, “Too much information!!! I can’t hear! It’s injections or instructions!”

This was received with gentle laughter and the nurse giving instructions said, “Oh, sorry! Usually people like to be distracted!”

I noted that she was telling me time-bound instructions I need to follow! “Distracting me would be telling me the best concert you’ve been to or something like that!”

The nurse giving me the interjections immediately started asking me about concerts! This was really great since the injections involve the nurse pinching the back of my arm tightly because they’re subcutaneous. I’d honestly rather just have the injections than that pinch.

This is done twice every time since only so much medication can be absorbed in one spot. Both can go into the same arm, but it’s always two. Romosozumab can also be administered on the top of the thigh or on the abdomen; helpful for patients in the UK who can self-administer this medication. Both of those options sound awful to hellish, and US patients always are given this medication by an infusion nurse, so back of the arm it is.

I also learned that only a physician in this healthcare system can change the chart info about your medications! Something the physicians I’ve seen have not mentioned or offered to go over, despite my repeatedly putting the changes into my pre-checkin for appointments.

Always listen to your nurses, friends! They’re always the ones who know how things really work.

  7. CW: Medical treatment: osteoporosis; Romosozumab. Also: medical neglect, iatrogenic trauma. EDS; hEDS

TLDR: Beginning Romosozumab therapy tomorrow. Any tips?

I have really a pile of health updates, but I’m still processing and integrating since delays in care have been a significant factor. Eventually I’ll be ready to talk about the slow, often meandering way my brain/nervous system processes most things that I’ve been masking my whole life.

Today, however, is about starting a monoclonal antibody therapy for osteoporosis tomorrow. One of the very surprising, recent diagnoses is that I already have osteoporosis at 56. It’s likely I already had it before menopause, but there wasn’t any reason to check.

Romosozumab is especially good at increasing bone density in the spine. It might reverse the osteopenia throughout my entire spine! It’s not as effective at doing this for the hips, but the hope is that the osteoporosis in my femur will be reverted to osteopenia.

The endocrinologists prepared me to have to spend a year on a different medication that wouldn’t increase my bone density. Then a DXA would prove to the insurance company that the cheaper drug is failing to improve my bone density and now can the right medication get approval?!

I was going to ask my hand doc for a letter stating that I’m in need of a surgery that shouldn’t happen until I have improved bone density to help move the authorization along.

Nope. I was approved immediately. Yay?

In addition to my old pal Anxiety, I have a lot of “greige” (grief +rage) since a over year ago I was talking to a pain management doctor about the consistent increase in pain in my back (lumbar and cervical) and hips. I was told if I didn’t want to take one of two fibromyalgia drugs I should go watch YouTube videos about living with fibromyalgia!

Because of this it wasn’t until May of this year that image orders were sent in that led to the DXA scan in July that diagnosed the osteoporosis. Then waiting 4 months to see an endocrinologist and another month to get scheduled and paperwork cleared for treatment.

I have multiple orthopedic issues (hands, hips, right knee, right and left lumbar spine issues, cervical spine issues, wildly unstable ankles, ribs that move out of place in my sleep, and my SI joint can get out of place) and osteoporosis. Two orthopedic surgeries are waiting, my knee could be done any time I say “go” and my left hand needs to wait on bone density before it can be done.

Despite all of this, only fibromyalgia meds or YouTube were suggested to manage the seriously disruptive symptoms. Not even a suggestion of seeing an orthopedist or ordering the most basic X-ray series.

Greige… Grage? Whatever, I’m feeling it:
