  1. CW: Body image, fat shaming, autism, midlife, acceptance

Here's a warts and all honest blog I wrote recently on the struggles I've had throughout my life with body-image, shame, control, midlife, perimenopause and the beginnings of self-acceptance, and how undiagnosed autism played into it all.

  6. @RickiTarr I'm in my early 40s. Thus far I'm definitely sleeping much hotter (hate it) and my inner ears get super itchy (fun). Lots more middle-of-the-night trips to the bathroom. Brain fog, check. Stress...is it perimenopause, or is it *gestures at everything*? Both?

I'm currently reading The New Perimenopause by Dr. Mary Claire Haver, which I highly recommend.

  8. Fitness Check In Day 91: Birthday Week

Unfortunately lately it seems my blog posts are at least two weeks or more apart instead of the daily or weekly posts I was shooting for. I have had soo many ups and downs, at one point I was becoming more unsure if I was going to keep this blog going or disappear completely online as I mentioned in my last post. A part of it was the physical pain everywhere, plus the pain and issues resulting from Barrett's Esophagus which made it hard to swallow, talk and eat. One factor I did not count […]

  12. I seem to get (sometimes very noticeable) drops in mood around 3-4am. I've been very unwell with my chronic health conditions and under quite a bit of stress at the moment. Some of it seems like it could be hormonal (I think it's worse at some points of the month than others), but does anyone know what the specific timing is about? Cortisol? Sometimes it wakes me fully, other times I might experience a sad dream and/or be only slightly conscious, but I can still feel it.

  17. Embracing Your Body’s Season: The Journey of Perimenopause

There are seasons the Earth moves through with quiet certainty — the slow tilt toward autumn, the softening of winter’s edge, the first warm breath of spring. None of these shifts happen all at once. They unfold in layers, in pauses, in subtle recalibrations that are easy to miss unless you’re paying attention.

Perimenopause is its own kind of season.

Not a sudden event, not a single moment of change, but a long, living transition — a reshaping that happens in waves. And much like the natural world, it asks us to listen differently. To soften our pace. To honor what is shifting beneath the surface.

This meditation, A Grounded Sanctuary for Perimenopause, was born from that understanding. It’s a space to rest inside the truth that your body is not malfunctioning — it is moving, adjusting, and becoming.

And in many ways, it mirrors the Earth’s own transitions.

The Earth Doesn’t Rush Its Becoming

When a season changes, it doesn’t apologize for the unevenness of the process.
Warm days appear in the middle of winter.
Cold mornings linger well into spring.
Leaves turn one tree at a time.

    Nature doesn’t demand consistency.
    It allows fluctuation.

    Perimenopause works the same way.
    Some days feel steady.
Others feel like weather — unpredictable, shifting, full of sensation.

    The body is not failing.
    It is reorganizing.

And like the seasons, it does so in its own rhythm.

    Cycles Within Cycles

In the meditation, there’s a moment where you imagine yourself in a landscape in transition — a meadow at dusk, a shoreline at first light. These are the thresholds of the natural world, the places where one thing is becoming another.

    Perimenopause is a threshold too.

Not the end of something, but the space between identities.
Not a decline, but a reorientation.
Not a loss, but a recalibration of energy, boundaries, and truth.

The Earth teaches us that thresholds are powerful.
    They are where clarity emerges.
    Where old patterns loosen.
    Where new forms take shape.

    The Body’s Weather

Just as the sky shifts from sun to cloud to wind without losing its essence, your inner landscape shifts too.

    Warmth rising.
    Coolness settling.
    Emotions moving like passing fronts.
Thoughts drifting in and out like fog.

In the meditation, you remind yourself:
I am the sky, not the storm.

This is the wisdom of both nature and perimenopause — the understanding that sensations are temporary, but the self beneath them is steady.

    Rooting Into What Is Becoming

One of the most powerful images in the meditation is the sense of roots — a downward connection into the earth, linking you to the women who have walked this path before you.

    This is seasonal wisdom.

Trees do not resist the shift from one season to the next.
    They root deeper.
    They conserve energy.
    They trust the cycle.

Perimenopause invites the same kind of rooting.
    A turning inward.
    A listening.
A reclaiming of what matters and a releasing of what doesn’t.

    This is not regression.
    It is maturation.

    A Passage, Not a Problem

The Earth never treats transition as a mistake.
    It treats it as movement.

Perimenopause is not something to fix.
    It is something to inhabit.

A passage into a new expression of self.
A season of honesty, boundaries, and deep self-respect.
A time when the body speaks more clearly than it ever has before.

The meditation is a sanctuary for that truth — a place to return to whenever the internal weather feels unpredictable or overwhelming.

Because your body is not working against you.
    It is guiding you.
    Wisely.
    Patiently.
Toward the next version of who you are becoming.

  19. CW: Periods

I was doing quite well mentally and physically this week when my body, after 11 weeks, decided that actually a period would be a good idea.

So now I am grumpy, sore and bleeding horribly.

Why can they not just stop now??

    - my partner bought & installed new foam ear pads on my headphones after I mentioned my current ones were disintegrating. He always looks out for my lobes. ❤️

    - I bought 2 cannoli while picking up our to-go dinner order. Partner didn’t want his, so I ended up eating both. Yum! 😋

    - finally was able to meet with my PCP & start hormone therapy for #perimenopause. Hopefully it will help! 🤞

  26. Good news, my safe foods I’d been reacting to these last few weeks has gone back to lower reaction. It’s my last lot of antibiotics tomorrow, so looks like being ill made everything worse, which makes sense.

When I went to the drs last week, they were surprised I didn’t know I had strep throat. I said I’m just used to feeling really ill and being told it’s fibromyalgia, or just something I have to deal with, I hadn’t even gone about my sore throat snd earache 😂 This was a sympathetic locum, who said it shouldn’t be like this.

  28. I think it's time for a #reintroduction post. I've been on Mastodon since 2024 and hanging out at The Mended Drum for over a year, and I'm doing a bit of remodeling on my feed. I'd love to make some new friends, and I would also appreciate any hashtag recommendations to follow!

I'm a cis woman of the Oregon Trail Generation living in #Raleigh, #NC, US. Currently a freelance proofreader specializing in deposition transcripts. I'm (lazy) #plantbased, unattached, #nonreligious, sober-ish, and #childfree.

Likes: #reading, #concerts, #animals (especially #cats), #photography, glamping, dragons, spreadsheets, pockets, bubbles, word games/puzzles, #solarpunk, #sustainability, a little light yoga, and the Oxford comma.

Dislikes: patriarchy, bigotry, billionaires, cars, fossil fuels, ads, #misophonia, #perimenopause, summer, basketball (see: misophonia), cooking, running, clothes shopping, phone calls, and glitter.

I'll expound on some of my favorite authors, artists, genres, and titles in a thread.

My journey with #perimenopause goes on, now featuring #HRT.

I've had a really bad time with the #progesterone part, over the months since I started.

I'm on the last two days of the first #luteal (progesterone) phase since my dose was adjusted, and I've been holding my breath. There have been tears and anger, but it's nothing compared to how it was the previous cycle. The relief is real!

Please BOOST this toot. Perimenopause is natural, but too many people don't know enough about it. ❤️
