@adventure_tense It's so rewarding though. Learning about your ancestors, especially when you also learn about the places and times they lived in, gives you an actual link to human history; personally, I find it makes me feel more connected to humanity as a whole, rather than just being a modern-day atom, bouncing around with no real connection. I know that doesn't matter to everyone, but it's grounding for me. #genealogy #geneadons

I've started using mind maps for tracking the progress of my various client cases. I've been using a spread sheet to keep track of where I am with them, but it doesn't quite work as an overview. I tend to think in hierarchical formats anyway, so I think this might be helpful. #genealogy #geneadons #productivity #organisation

I was talking with a doctor last week about my early fascination with #genetics (due to a documentary I saw decades ago about the search for the genetic basis of Huntington's). I said that if I had been scientifically minded, I would probably have pursued a career in genetics. The doctor said it could be argued that, by becoming a #genealogist, in a sense I did exactly that. Hadn't thought of it that way. I just ended up studying how genes are passed down rather than how they go wrong. #genealogy #geneadons #dna

How do you find evidence of someone's birth in Canada when there seem to be no records *at all* of the family in this country? US censuses all insist he was born in Canada, but the client doesn't really know where in Ontario the guy was born (a late record in the US gives a location, but that's hardly definitive), they appear in no censuses, and nobody knows which church might have their records. I'm at a loss. #genealogy #geneadons #BillC3

Claire Kluskens (the "Former Subject Matter Expert for Genealogy/Census-Related Records at U.S. National Archives and Records Administration" from her LinkedIn headline) has added a webpage at her website "The Twelve Key" on "NARA News" -
"This page provides links to sources, articles, and webpages with important news about the National Archives and Records Administration."
The notification she emailed to blog subscribers states "It’s important for the genealogical, historical, veteran, and other research communities to follow changes in key personnel and policies at the National Archives and Records Administration. In addition, administrative and legal decisions shape – for good or ill – the records kept for future generations."
She doesn't post a lot, or frequently, but it's always good stuff!

My great-grandfather's 1935 state death records have a name for his father that only appears on those records - no censuses, birth, death, or marriage.
The informant was his oldest son's wife (my grandmother) ... who just said what her inlaws told her.GGF's mother appears in 1900 as married to another man - with her son (GGF) with her brother/his uncle in the next county and her 16-year-old daughter *married and living in yet another county*
That daughter was the last survivor of the nuclear family, and her death documents named her birth father. Which allowed me to find her parents' marriage records and their household in the 1880 census. The mother and daughter are buried next to each other, with the daughter's family and some of the mother's siblings.
As the last survivor (by more than a decade) GGF's sister made sure her own family knew the whole story.
Her father moved several counties over in the late 1880s and had a second family.

While exploring the Digital Library of Georgia, Daniel Brown discovered a long-lost photograph of his father standing beside Amelia Earhart at Atlanta’s Candler Field in 1934. The image confirmed a story his father told for decades but never had proof of.
