My great-grandfather's 1935 state death records have a name for his father that only appears on those records - no censuses, birth, death, or marriage.
The informant was his oldest son's wife (my grandmother) ... who just said what her inlaws told her.GGF's mother appears in 1900 as married to another man - with her son (GGF) with her brother/his uncle in the next county and her 16-year-old daughter *married and living in yet another county*
That daughter was the last survivor of the nuclear family, and her death documents named her birth father. Which allowed me to find her parents' marriage records and their household in the 1880 census. The mother and daughter are buried next to each other, with the daughter's family and some of the mother's siblings.
As the last survivor (by more than a decade) GGF's sister made sure her own family knew the whole story.
Her father moved several counties over in the late 1880s and had a second family.

Register for free online lecture "Lineage: Genealogy and the Power of Connection in Early America" sponsored by Historic Annapolis (part of their Virtual Lecture Series) and presented on Tuesday 14 April from 7-8:30 p.m. EDT.
Can’t watch live? Please register and you’ll receive the link to watch the recording after the event.
While we may think of Americans living in the 1700s as largely the subject of genealogy research, they were active participants in what was a foundational interest and practice in their own time. Family histories were deeply meaningful for diverse early Americans, but it was also baked into the very structures of their society through law, politics, and religion. Karin Wulf’s new book, Lineage: Genealogy and the Power of Connection in Early America examines how we can understand the role of genealogy then, and its impact now.

While exploring the Digital Library of Georgia, Daniel Brown discovered a long-lost photograph of his father standing beside Amelia Earhart at Atlanta’s Candler Field in 1934. The image confirmed a story his father told for decades but never had proof of.
The rediscovery highlights how digitized archival collections preserve history while unexpectedly reconnecting families with their own past. -

My favourite #genealogy find this year was tracing the Fairbanks family line. It is a famous family but my line was missing a connection in the published book. Turns out that one Samuel Fairbanks was born out of wedlock. Confirmed with birth record and the probate records who was listed as mother, wife and children. All matched the rest of the details in the book. Same with Hannah Breck who also had a published genealogy. Now I can confidently fill in some details and move past that wall. What is your best research find? Best wishes for the New Year! #genealogy #Geneadons #FamilyHistory
