  1. CW: Child loss to war and domestic violence.

Salma and her husband were living in a bombed out school and weren't able to buy medicine for her husband's chronic health conditions - #diabetes and #hypertension. Neveen took action and introduced Salma to myself and her now-campaign manager. Palestinians aren't allowed to create their own fundraising campaigns, so they have to find someone outside of the country to manage it for them. We managed to fund a phone for Salma and Neveen set it up for her.

  3. How America Got So Sick (And No, It’s Not Because We Forgot Our Vitamins)

Andrew Siegel MD  7/25/2026 There’s a line from a recent Atlantic article that stuck with me:“The health of a nation reflects the health of a democracy.” As a doctor, I read that and thought, well, that explains a lot. Because if America were a patient, the chart would be thick, the medication list would be long, and the vital signs would be… let’s call them “concerning.” We spend more on health care than any country in the world, yet we’re more tired, fatter, more anxious, […]

  4. A longitudinal study of over 25,000 people followed for approximately 25 years examined the associations of fruit juice, whole fruit, and other sugar-sweetened beverages with elevated blood pressure. Hypertension had a dose-responsive relationship with fruit juice and other sugary drinks, but not with whole fruit.

  8. One Thirty Over Eighty: How America Lowered the Hypertension Line While Europe Held Steady

A single edit to a single table turned tens of millions of healthy Americans into patients overnight. The question is whether the line was drawn for them or for the people who bill them. In November of 2017, the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association released a clinical guideline that ran to roughly four hundred and eighty pages, and somewhere in the front matter they moved a single number. The threshold for diagnosing high blood pressure fell from 140/90 to 130/80. Nobody's artery changed that day. No chest tightened, no vessel narrowed, no symptom appeared. And yet, by the arithmetic of that one revision, about thirty-one million Americans who had been healthy the previous evening were now classified as having a chronic cardiovascular disease. National prevalence of hypertension climbed from near thirty-two percent of adults to near forty-six percent between one edition of a document and the next, and among adults under forty-five the rate more than doubled. Nothing about the population's arteries had changed; only the boundary of the word had moved. […]

  9. An observational study of over 112,000 people for ~8 years examined hypertension and CVD in relation to consumption of food additives. Antioxidant and non-antioxidant preservatives were associated with 22 and 29 percent higher risk of hypertension, respectively. Non-antioxidant preservatives were associated with a 16% higher risk of CVD.

  13. I got a phone call from the GP today about my ongoing blood pressure issues.
He doesn't want me to have medication, and is content for me to monitor it, despite the average readings being into hypertension territory.
He is arranging for an ECG and at the same time wants me to be aware of the outside possibility of atrial fibrillation after exercise as a cause of my fatigue.
I'm taking this as good news.

  14. World Hypertension Day

May 17 is marked as World Hypertension Day. Many people with high blood pressure do not realise they have it.
That is what makes hypertension difficult.
Routine checks, healthier habits, and earlier awareness all make a difference.
Insights shared through My Patient Advice often highlight how accessible healthcare information supports preventive care and informed decisions.

  16. In other news

I think I'm making sense in my head of the blood pressure readings that the machine produced yesterday - although I'm not sure the GP will follow my logic.
I'm as sure as I can be (as a non-expert) that I haven't got bog-standard hypertension, but that my blood pressure goes up disproportionately during exercise. This may be why I take so long to recover from even modest exercise.
It's also dissappointing that the monitor didn't cover late night & early morning when I think my BP is highest.

I imagine I'll be hearing from the doctor in the next few days.
