  1. Notifications You Missed

By Cliff Potts, CSO, and Editor-in-Chief of WPS News

Baybay City, Leyte, Philippines — 16 October 2026

    A Helpful Alert Arrives

From time to time, the platform may inform users that something has happened. A response. A mention. An update involving someone they know or once knew.

The alert is framed as assistance. A courtesy. A reminder that activity continues, even when one is not actively watching.

    On Persistent Awareness

Notifications arrive with varying urgency. Some are marked important. Others are merely informational. Together, they create a steady sense that attention is required somewhere else.

The details are brief. Enough to prompt curiosity. Enough to invite a return.

    Returning, Briefly

Clicking the alert leads back to the platform. The original reason for the visit may be quickly satisfied. Often, something else appears immediately afterward.

The return is efficient. The stay is rarely short.

    A Mild Consideration

One might wonder whether awareness improves connection or simply maintains vigilance. Whether missing something is always a problem that needs correcting.

These questions are unnecessary. The platform is only keeping users informed.

After all, staying updated is important.

  15. The experiment (and our unexpected results) is finally live!

    searchenginejournal.com/ads-us

We wanted to know what the ideal number of ads on the site would be. So, we tested it.

    We found:

    - Our audience used the site less as ad numbers declined.

    - Removing programmatic ads (serving only in-house ads) reduced the amount of reading and time users spent on the site.

    Cool right?

No idea why, but I had some theories.
