  1. I dislike #LLMs for a number of reasons.

Their appropriation of the term "AI" (there is nothing even resembling intelligence there, and never will be).

The squandering of energy, water and other resources.

The #deceptiveDesign patterns used to bait and hook users into thinking they are conversing with a conscious thing (they are not) causing immense harms.

The wholesale theft of basically everything they could find anywhere on the internet, irrespective of the creators' licences.

  6. Android UI Deceptive Design Pattern Department: A few weeks ago, we crammed an AI button into the Search bar widget. But, nobody used it, even when we tricked people into tapping the button accidentally if the corner of their phone pressed on the base of their thumb. How do we get more people to use our AI malfeature? I have a smart idea: let's move the button 1/3 the way into the text field where you type a search term.

  11. PSA: if your website loads for a fraction of a second, then vomits-up a fake error such as "This website cannot load because you're blocking html-load-dotcom" (or css-load-dot-com), your Web Devs are bad people and should reconsider their career decisions.

It's a deceptive design that breaks the web.

Such websites have been coded to go out of their way to create a problem, then falsely assign blame to ad blockers. It's a sleight-of-hand to trick people visiting the website to switch-off ad-blockers and weaken their security for all websites. Paying that ransom to access a website is foolish; it's better to close that browser tab and avoid returning to the problematic website.

Just got an email from Withings apologising a for using deceptive design in an email to trick their customers into updating their marketing preferences

    That feels like a first!

This Halloween, I’m digging into the real horror stories of bad UX: dark patterns, endless scrolls, and manipulative design tricks haunting our favorite apps.

  22. This is a hell of a barely legal opt-out from ClaudeAI.

First, you should not have to opt out, you should have to opt in.

Second, that gray check is really trying its hardest to conceal that it's actually a "yes."
