  6. Tired of being constantly ‘nudged’? I know I am. Text, email, robocall reminders & notifications - from everyone all the time. Blame #BehavioralEconomics. It’s all about compliance engineering. Read the Wikipedia note:

“The first formulation of the term nudge and associated principles was developed in cybernetics by James Wilk before 1995 and described by Brunel University academic D. J. Stewart as "the art of the nudge". It also drew on methodological influences from clinical psychotherapy tracing back to Gregory Bateson... In this variant, a nudge is a microtargeted design geared toward a specific group of people, irrespective of the scale of intended intervention. In 2008, Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein's book Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness brought nudge theory to prominence. The authors refer to the influencing of behaviour without coercion as libertarian paternalism and the influencers as choice architects.” en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nudge_th #nudge #NudgeTheory #compliance

  40. 2/🧵In our modern, data-driven #economy consumer compliance (that’s us folks) is being ENGINEERED through the application of “Behavioral Economics” (see previous post) by corps, govt, banks, Drs & clinics, and NGOs. This is a widely misunderstood
& underreported predatory manipulation. Here’s what it looks like:

With AI and real-time data analytics, behavioral economics has evolved into precision behavioral design:
    • Real-time monitoring of user behavior (cookies, wearables, apps)
    • Predictive algorithms determining the optimal nudge per person
    • “Dark patterns” in UI/UX steering behavior invisibly
    • Governments using social credit or reputation systems (e.g., China) blending surveillance + behavioral nudging
This hybrid of behavioral economics + data science + persuasive design is becoming the new architecture of compliance in both democratic and authoritarian systems. #BehavioralEconomics #economics #psychology #nudge #compliance #SocialScience

  45. Let’s talk about “behavioral economics” - the academic discipline that focuses on the consumer decision making (behavior/psychology) involved in purchasing (economics) and more broadly “compliance” environments. The basic ideas behind #BehavioralEconomics emerged decades ago, but the discipline itself became entrenched in the mid-1990s. BE gave us the #nudge - you know, those prompts we get every day via text, email & phone from retailers (you’ve got 1 item waiting in your cart for check-out), our doctors for appointments, the bank, even grocery stores that place fast moving or promoted items at eye level on the shelf.

Nudge is a concept in behavioral science, political theory and economics which proposes designs or changes in decision environments as ways to influence the behavior and decision making of groups or individuals—in other words, it's "a way to manipulate people's choices to lead them to make specific decisions". #economics #manipulation #compliance #consumers
