(5/12) Specifically, LLMs benefit from dark patterns that “launder” the idea that a mind is on the other end of the screen. This obfuscates the intentions of AI companies while making invisible the labor of the people lower in the chain.
I don't think there's a “neutral” version of this, but I do think there are less bad versions of it, if LLMs are scoped for specific tasks.

Řešení je jednoduché:nepoužívat karty a používat hotovost,kterou člověk vybere přímo na přepážce.Toto je dle mého názoru důvod,proč vlády a jejich lobbyisti chtějí zrušit hotovost:aby mohli vydírat přemrštěné výpalné za běžný život občana.

J'écoute un podcast sur les IA... J'apprends le terme "sycophancy" pour designer la manière qu'ont ces outils de flatter leurs utilisateurs·trices en allant dans leur sens, en tentant de leur faire plaisir de manière de plus en plus subtile, quelle que soit la question posée.
La "sycophancy" c'est l'état de bien-être et de dépendance qu'induit cette manière de faire. Une accoutumance pour s'assurer de faire disparaître tout sens critique face à ces outils ?

Really hate that more and more dark pattern BS is packed into Turbotax every year.
Started my return and the only option shown is the recommended $150 filing “Start for Free” with a little “See other options” hiding below.
The placement and the phrasing had me confused for a sec and I actually started continuing on before I realized they threw me into an upsell first thing (instead of the same damn plan we’ve used for five years) and restarted.

Mastodon #peeve:
If you click a hastag, you're taken to page summarizing content with that hashtag etc.
At the top is a prominent button labelled "Follow hashtag", which does what it says in one click.
There is no equivalent "Block" or "Filter out" functionality on this page. Instead, you have to copy the tag (or retype it later), go to Preferences, select Filters, then Add New Filter, then fill out a multi-input form, and then click Add Filter.
#Mastodon should make it as easy to filter specific things out of your feed as it does to follow those same specific things. The fact that the difference in effort here is so stark makes it feel like a dark design pattern - maybe even to the point of being abusive to the user.
There's also a different level of effort for following/muting-or-blocking a user. To follow, you can hover over their name in your feed, and there's a one-click button to follow them. But to block or mute them, you have to open a separate page for the user, and then click multiple things to actually complete the action.
"Create a suggestion issue in our repo!" - ya, I've done that a few times. Those requests appear to drop into the round file, unread and unresponded-to. It seems posting to Fedi gets better traction.

A horrible (and not unexpected) #darkPattern in Android's Google Photos app. When backup of photos is disabled the app shows a big button to enable sync, user have to change the toggle to change the button to keep the backups off.

Je n’aime pas que #MacOS réactive l’installation automatique des mises-à-jour de sécurité lors de l’installation de la dernière mise-à-jour.
Pas parce que je ne veut pas les installer, bien au contraire. J’encourage tous à garder vos systèmes à jour.
Mais parce que je veux être celui qui décide du moment où l’installation, et le redémarrage du système, est fait.
Car non, la réouverture des fenêtres automatique au redémarrage ne fonctionne pas si bien avec tout les programmes. #darkPattern

The current state of the web assumes that the reader is an adversary to be trapped and monetized.
When a news website forces you through three dismissive actions just to read a headline, they are burning your cognitive budget before delivering any value. You are greeted by a cookie banner taking up the bottom 30% of your screen, a "Subscribe!" modal dead center, an autoplaying video pinned to the corner and a prompt begging to send you push notifications.

Microsoft will refuse to take "no" for an answer when prompting you to set Edge as the default browser. "Set later" is a dark UX pattern that rejects the user autonomy.
