What frustrates me most is that many people want a better digital world, but they are unwilling to try alternatives like Mastodon or running their own website.
People have become lazy. Everything has to be ready-made. You cannot have everything handed to you on a silver platter, life does not work that way.
The hardest challenge is getting people to unlearn the addictive patterns of an enshittified internet and move toward healthier habits and the decentralized web.

The internet is broken.
Many people feel that if they don't get likes, views, or comments, they've failed. I still vividly remember the days when I created my first website or updated Twitter via text message. It was great just being online, visibility wasn't even on our minds.
Commercial algorithms ruined the internet. Everything is filtered through them, and it has fundamentally changed how people think. Even dating has turned into a doomscrolling app on Tinder, browsing a catalog of people's traits. We no longer appreciate the natural things in life; instead, people constantly chase something better, never actually getting there.
It's sad that these days the Internet is mostly about boosting one's ego. We post only our best moments, even though we'll end up rotting in a coffin just like everyone else. Still, a thousand followers and a couple of likes are undeniably a bit comforting (note: I'm being sarcastic here).
We here on the Fediverse are different, though. We've accepted the natural way of things, and we don't expect every post to go viral. I just wish other people could see how the internet used to be.

“First, turn on location services in your phone settings and allow T-Life location access,” reads the sign. “Next, open T-Life and tap Check In. That’s it! Go ahead and shop around – a Mobile Expert will see you soon.” #enshittification

Time to get my old laptop out and to start playing with #Gentoo...
There is still the #Torvalds kernel problem though.
At the moment, my digital and online life feels like a permanent and desperate flight from #ensloppification and #enshittification.

Google is not a serious company. How does your email's web client fire up 604 requests for showing me my emails?

A map showing the intensity of Instagram contamination would be helpful. A measure of the transformation of real environments into theme parks.
Obviously, if there is any evidence of Segway hire or tours, that is an absolute indicator of 'avoid at all costs'.

@FrankauLux
> The fact that the situation is much better in the EU than in the US is the proof that regulation does work. You're not disagreeing; this is exactly the point in @pluralistic essays.
We have examples of muscular regulation actually keeping these #enshittification forces in check: in the recent past of the USA, in (as you say) the present day of the EU.
The present day of the USA, with captive regulators and shredded democracy, shows the folly of deregulation.
-
@pluralistic has written about this various times, but here's one giving the example of why Facebook followed the same narrative you describe:
https://pluralistic.net/2025/03/28/street-pricing/#sportball-analogies
The same narrative applies to many, many corporations: always motivated to #enshittification, but not able to act on it until they perceive the consequences have lowered enough.
And the remedy is clear: Raise those consequences again. Muscular regulation. Corporate death sentence. Unionised workforce. etc.
-
Both your narrative @stefano, and the #Enshittification narrative, fit the awful behaviour we're seeing.
@pluralistic (of “enshittification” fame) also describes why it's always been a force at play, as you describe; and also why it's taking hold especially now:
Corporations like these always have people, in pursuit of profit, trying to yank on the enshittification lever all day long.
Previously, regulation and other consequences held those people in check. Today, it doesn't.

Properly supervised, regulated and audited #AI intrigues me; the possibilities for medical breakthroughs, new drugs, scientific advancement and research are endless in an ideal world. But we do not live in an ideal world, far from it. And I am very concerned about the #billionaires and #TechBros that currently control and drive the #ArtificialIntelligence sector - without consideration of power, water and general environmental concerns. I am frankly appalled that there are still no real, tangible guardrails and government regulators appear very late to the table. I do not trust the industry to regulate itself - how could I when predatory business practices and #enshittification are everywhere. AI is already being deployed for #SurveillancePricing as well as other, anti-consumer practices. Doctors are using AI to write progress notes, when research clearly proves that handing off these kinds of tasks diminishes human observation and thought. Plus, jobs WILL be lost & most will not benefit. Time for a pause.

Whilst trying to improve my command of the Swedish language I stumbled across this little gem on Enshittification by Ulrika Good.

small but obnoxious bit of #enshittification Google Calendar now lists "Columbus Day" as a national holiday here in the US instead of the far better Indigenous People's Day.
(and yes this is probably because of our current crap president) but it is obnoxious because either I have to not use the national holidays calendar at all but have no way to change or delete just that crap from my calendar
If you don't know why it is crap look up his actual history - he is not worth celebrating

Do not use "ChainPatrol" to protect your sites. These incompetent fools use AI to detect "similar" sites and report them as phishing, wasting everyone's time and money.

Every once in a while I get a glimpse into what the internet without ad-blockers and reader-mode looks like and it is awful.
