Younger Rob would have quietly smug after the recent #1Password drama given I moved to #VaultWarden a few years ago. But if the last 10 years have taught us anything is that #Enshittification is an equal opportunity employer and will happily onboard any and all products. I now keep fingers permanently crossed that the various products I use, including #SelfHosted ones don’t succumb to the seemingly irresistible lure.

Over the past months Media Player always came up with Unknown Artist / Unknown Title (no metadata) so I typed in the data (🤔). Then discovered that Media Player had a severe case of #Microsoft #enshittification. They had deliberately switched off its ability to retrieve #metadata.
Then I found fre:ac and been using it since. Quite a powerful and flexible rip utility 🙂. Also use #Picard from #MusicBrainz.
Uninstalled Media Player.

I just searched an electronic textbook for a technical term. The search resulted in 10 hits, identified by page numbers. None of those 10 pages contained the search term (nor a derived form of this term).
Then I turned on "exact match" and found the one actual example of this term. Which had not been included in the 10 "hits".
... so there is a text search function that gives you hits where the word does not occur, but no hits for where it does.

Thelot argues that, enshittification, a term coined by Cory Doctrow which has become one of the stickiest ideas of our era to explain the current state of technology and capitalism, is a misdiagnosis of what he describes as “platform narcissism.” The idea is that people, namely older people like Doctrow and western geratric millennials who used to get a lot of value out of Facebook, selfishly think platforms should continue to cater to their needs even though they aged out of them and should be focused on raising their kids. The platforms are actually popular and well liked, but by younger people who are using Instagram and deriving value from it in a way older people can’t understand, or by people in other countries and contexts than their own. Additionally, Thelot argues, the theory of enshittification allows users who should log off an excuse to stay on platforms that it is fashionable to hate. They spend time there, but say they hate it and can’t leave because they are trapped.”

It seems petty, the president renaming "Lake Ontario" to "Lake America."
But is it?
What if this is a simple way to identify who will serve your interests no matter how absurd (or inhumane) they may be?
If a large media outlet can so easily make this change, they could do the same thing with say, election results.

Lots of people (and I am definitely not excluding myself) try to sell something on social media - their products, their political causes, their creative work, and so forth. We frequently see online personages who have "made it" - they have massive fandoms, and their posts are shared widely. Yet the online ecosystem is supported by vast numbers of people who might dream of "making it to the top" - but for statistical reasons, the vast majority will never make it there. There is only so much online attention to go around, after all.
This is called the "tournament principle", and it doesn't just apply to online stars, but also to diverse career fields such as professional soccer, the music and movie industries, street gangs, and the academic career path. In each case, the people who have made it to the top are supported by vast numbers of people who might hope that they will also reach the top some day - but there are only so many top-level positions in each field, and thus the vast majority of challengers will fail.
So, the odds of becoming one of those rare online superstars in whatever niche you have chosen for yourself are bad enough. But as the #enshittification process described by @pluralistic describes so vividly, the commercial social media platforms - #Facebook , #X , #TikTok , #Instagram and so forth - have made the situation even worse via their #algorithm .
First there is the gambling aspect. The algorithm randomly boosts some posts and makes them more visible in the feed so that they can "go viral" - which makes other users believe: "Maybe one of my posts will become viral, too!" Which keeps them engaged on the platform and encourages them to post more content, which allows the platform to sell more advertising space (and, these days, gives them more fodder to feed into their #LLM models).
Secondly, the commercial platforms encourage you to spend money to make your posts more visible - effectively turning them into your own personal ads. This is rather prevalent - I am in a Facebook group for self-published authors, and a surprisingly large portion of the posts is about the optimal social media ad strategy.
Now, the #Fediverse doesn't really have an "algorithm" as such, and thus has a much more level playing field for all participants. Of course, the downside of the Fediverse is that the total number of users is much, much smaller than on the large commercial platforms, and thus your "potential reach" is smaller. Still, since there is no algorithm that actively works against you, the _effective_ reach you can achieve with typical engagement might be higher.
Of course, none of this means that you _have_ to engage with the "attention economy" of social media, on the Fediverse or elsewhere - the vast majority of social media users engage for fun, or to get information, or to converse with people with the same interests. But if "getting attention" _is_ something you are after (and considering that we all have to make our living in this late-state Capitalist hellscape, I am not going to judge anyone for that), you should know what you are working with.

No, dear MacPaw, that’s absurd. You either offer free high quality software or you destroy your reputation by this shite.
I guess that’s just another reason to focus more on terminal use than I already do. Many GUI apps continually degrade by design.

They've designed their new AI assisted toothbrush so you have to use their products with it. Regular ongoing rental fees to Dyson for as long as you use the toothbrush.

@Lambo #enshittification ist bei Monopolisten immer wahrscheinlich. Mit KKR, einem US-Private Equity Investor als Eigentümer m.E. nahezu garantiert. Abhängigkeit kultureller Einrichtungen von US-Investoren: no go! Als SW-Entwickler würde ich schätzen, dass es mit überschaubarem Aufwand möglich wäre, eine gute freie und open source Alternative zu schaffen. Das Hauptproblem ist aber nicht die Software, sondern der Content? Bekommt man dan Buchhandel ins Boot? Bin hier unbedarft (nur Lesender).

It's surprisingly (perhaps worryingly) refreshing to deal with companies that aren't trying to harvest your data or force a third party Giant Corporate Entity into the transaction.
Companies with sane and simple t&cs and privacy policies.
Companies which are happy to receive your money (via bank transfer), send you goods, and leave it at that.
