  1. With all the #AIDeskilling and #enshittification, people (and junior software engineers, sorry, "junior vibe coders") will be asking this in ten years.

And the last true software engineers who can still write code on their own will weep, because nobody remembers them and everyone takes slop for granted.

  3. It looks like this TV is also glitching after 20 minutes or so of playing broadcast TV (at least on ITV). Audio is ok but the video gets stuck for a while and the glitches as it tries to catch up. I expect it's video decoding performance causing sync issue but being an integrated "smart" device it's almost certainly undebuggable.

It's the same issue you get on mobile phones etc. They slow down over the years and if you factory reset they feel like new again.

    Another case of .

  4. Back in the day I bought a Sony BluRay player that listed lots of catch up services. Over the year most of them stopped working. It's a perfect example of

Proprietary stuff is not good for sustainability. While I'm not a great fan of Amazon I have to say that their fire sticks do work well, are cheap (likely a significant loss leader) and are typically updated for longer periods than many of the built-in "Smart TV" stuff.

  5. "Why We Fight For The Internet" a new blog post by me

    > There are a lot of things in this world worth fighting for. Things we would like to see improved in our society. Wealth inequality, corporate and political corruption, civil rights for queer people, especially trans and gender non-conforming folks.

    ...

    > Why then, might you ask, should anyone be focusing on the politics of the internet?! Believe it or not, it's my opinion that fighting to improve the internet is one of the most important fights we can be having right now, in order to maximize our political effect.

    ...

    > But a healthy internet also allows people to avoid discussions they don't want to be a part of. The consequence of not giving people this kind of freedom to not engage is what we see on the internet now: everyone is frustrated and mad, getting into flame wars and screaming competitions. I'd wager a lot of the people spreading negativity in certain comments sections are doing so because an opaque algorithm keeps feeding them content that they vehemently disagree with, and at a certain point, they feel the need to correct the narrative.

  7. Amongst the many challenges with the deterioration of traditional web search is the problem of loss of access to usable references. Where we were once able to collect a useful sampling of data and with that, do analysis and synthesis, today we're presented with garbage.

In the past, the challenge was to marshal diverse ideas into a coherent whole. Today, the challenge is to even find one workable source that even vaguely relates to your search.

  12. The Subtraction Economy

How they take more, give you less, and train you not to notice. Pour two fingers of the vodka you trusted ten years ago and you taste grain, cold, and a clean burn that meant something had been distilled with care. Pour the same brand today and you get water and a faint chemical ghost of that promise. The bottle looks identical and the price has climbed, while the liquid inside has been quietly reformulated down toward rotgut. A label held constant over a swapped recipe is the entire con, and the house is betting you will never run a blind taste test against a memory, because memory fades while the bottle on the shelf looks just like the one you loved. 14. I remember when Netflix was too good to be true. Mind you, I used to feel that way about Google, once.

While venture capital demands ever increasing profits based on eternal growth, the world eventually refuses to work that way. Now that the commodification of TV drama has reached its peak, fully AI-generated TV series can't be far behind. In the way that Spotify slops AI-generated music into playlists.

@Antigrav is right and boycotting the US is a moral choice I actively support. But revulsion with everything Trumpine is only a part of it.

For ethical reasons I cancelled Netflix and Spotify in 2020 and weaned myself off all big tech. I'm old and grumpy and I've reached a happy stage where nobody can enshittify my digital life, because I hardly have one.

Living in an area with no cellular reception helps -- I don't own a cellphone. I've run my own web and mailservers since 1995, have never used "the cloud" and don't own any device which phones home. Thanks to uBlock I never see a single advertisement anywhere. Not one. Ever. Mastodon is my only social media.

Some may see that as a sad life. In my defence, my collections of books and CDs remain conveniently algorithm-free. Film festivals are a delight and libraries have again become magical places.

For fifteen years I've described myself as an accidental Luddite. These days I'm a decidedly deliberate one.

  21. For years I've defended #roku as the "least enshittified" video device. Well, they've finally joined the club.

    Fuck you, Roku. Fuck you.

Thanks for adding a ton of crap I don't use to my home screen and removing my ability to customize it to my liking.

You're as awful as #chromecast now. Worse, because you used to be better.

  23. I get really tired of pages like this. I had to wrestle with this page no less than 6 times before purchasing tickets.

    1. Everyone has an adblocker. Everyone. Build your website with this in mind.

    3. Your "security" measures are losing you more legitimate customers than saving you from fraud
    4. You sell tickets to tourists. Ofc their connections will look sketchy, not match regions, etc

  28. [P] And "failure" to obey Lovecraft and write precisely as he would is described as "bad writing" without an ounce of self-awareness or explanation as to how it is. The reality being that the devs dared to c9mmit the heresy of deviating. Oh my stars and garters, the horror. The gall of not meeting the entitlement to more-of-the-same. I don't have any more to add. I just... I don't like the neuroenshittified.

  29. [P] Lovecraft's been dead for a bit, though. He shouldn't be rizzing the neuroenshittified with his aura from beyond the grave. Hiverarchians don't do anything in halves, eh? It's just so weird to me. "Unga bunga! Dis writer write story thing me like! All similar thing kowtow! Obey!" Absurd. No one owes any such allegiance to any other over a popular work. One isn't bound to service by writing in the same genre.

  30. [P] This reminds me of when Chris Avellone appointed himself as God of Fallout despite having very little to do with the game, releasing a bible and having people worship him becuase he's some kind of neurotypical charismatic and he told them to. Despite never having anything to do with the first game, never having a leadership position on any of the games, and every other Fallout writer loathing him.

  31. [P] It's funny to me just how much more educated and well-read the devs are verusus those silly enough to think thry can test their measure. Did the first game, Call of the Sea, have some scant Lovecraftian elements? Um, it had ftaghn, which was more a nod to Lovecraft than anything. But one word does not an officially licensex work make! "It deviates from Lovecraftian lore!" So??? Why does that matter?

    #psychology #actuallyautistic #humans #enshittification #calloftheeldergods

  32. [P] Anyone who diesn't know this needs to read a bloody book that isn't Lovecraft, notably on non-Abrahamic ancient religions & beliefs. Some of whifh amounted to: I saw this crowned serpent rise out of the sea, it's my god now and I want to be a fish person. Funnily enough, a criwned serpent fossil has been dredged out of the ocean, it's pretty wild. And the Call of the Elxed Gods devs are pretty in-tune with this.

  33. [P] The reaction to Call of the Elder Gods is fascinating. You'd think that H.P. Lovecraft is some kind of Racist Gid who controls the minds of his supplicants, keeping them bound to the word of his particularly uninspired, tropey (even for the time), hackbeyed, and xenophobic drivel. The concept of elder gods, fish people, wnd so on are far, far older than Lovecraft, FFS. He used, not originated.

  35. Hoping that I can crowdsource this: I feel like for a while I kept seeing people posting the same article discussing the capital investments AI companies were making (e.g. in data centers) and the huge revenue profile they'd have to have to make the ROI reasonable on that debt, but now I can't seem to find the article. I'm sure it must have been making the rounds on Fedi. Anyone know what it was?
