Why One Man Is Fighting for Our Right to Control Our #GarageDoor Openers
If companies can modify internet-connected products and charge subscriptions after people have already purchased them, what does it mean to own anything anymore?
After frustration with #Chamberlain's #MyQ and shutting out 3rd Parties, he developed #RATGDO, for Rage Against the #GarageDoorOpener, an #Esp32 based that workds over your local network using #ESPHome or #HomeKit.

Well I couldn't get the garage keypad of my dreams with an NFC reader and RFID keychain tags, so I did the next best thing and put an NFC tag on the evil no good very bad MyQ keypad so I can open the garage door by tapping my phone against it. :pupper_wag:
And yes, I am absolutely petty enough that I stuck the tag right over the MyQ logo because Chamberlain can eat muh loafy butt :corgi_wiggle:

big fat fuck you to Chamberlain :corgi_wtf1: MyQ is the worst thing since BMW tried to charge a subscription for heated seats. I have a Konnected puck sitting on the opener now so at least I get the integration I actually want, but I can't banish the MyQ setup entirely since people use it.
I haaaate you MyQ :blobfoxtableflip:

@montef Oh, forgot we got garage door (Chamberlain - so am gonna change from AWFUL #MyQ to a hubitat-friendly zigbee adapter), and smart locks.
W/D sensors: I have a plug that senses when W falls below certain voltage level for specified time (4 min) then alerts me it's done. Dryer? It's electric. Don't know of 220v zigbee plug. 🤪
ps: take it from me: it's an obsession!

I love how #Matter is working to make #home #automation better and more #interoperable, and yet a few #companies still want to make things worse (cough cough #myQ).

ratgdo: Hardware hack to control a garage door opener over the Internet (without manufacturer proprietary crap)

Bought and installed two "Rage Against The Garage Door Openers" (ratgdo) and now I've got even more functionality than the manufacturer's closed "MyQ" cloud service. I love the open source community. #myq #HomeAssistant #HomeAutomation #ESPHome @homeassistant

I have received my #RATGDO !!! (Rage Against The Garage Door Opener)
https://paulwieland.github.io/ratgdo
I can now free my #Chamberlain #GarageDoorOpener from #myQ #enshittification
- no more ads when I want to control my garage door (really: the myQ app keeps pushing ads for add-on hardware and subscriptions)
- my garage door opener will now be locally controlled via ESPHome
- it will be fully integrated with my #HomeAssistant system
- notifications will be immediate (myQ notifications are not instant, which renders them useless)
- no dependency on third-party cloud servers (I don't need to worry about myQ servers being down or worse, compromised)
I am also going to disable integrated wi-fi connectivity and delete my myQ account to make sure that my opener never gets an OTA "upgrade" without my consent
I have already installed the ESPHOme firmware and am currently printing an enclosure: https://www.printables.com/model/602600-ratgdo-v20-v25-v25i-pcb-enclosure

We recently had our garage door replaced, along with a #Chamberlain garage opener, connected with #MyQ, since this is basically the only option available in Canadian big box stores (LiftMaster and Craftsman GDOs are part of the Chamberlain Group)
The #HomeAssistant / MyQ integration worked for a whole TWO days, then Chamberlain decided to disable third-party access to their API, forcing everyone to use their proprietary MyQ app, via their cloud servers (talk about timing: I thought I had broken my HA automation, then I read that it had quit working for EVERYONE, so not my fault)
Anyway, 10 minutes ago I received a notification that my #RATGDO has shipped. When I have installed it, I can say goodbye to MyQ, and delete my account so that my opener doesn't communicate with Chamberlain's servers ever egain
Garage door automation will then be entirely local, and fully integrated with my HomeAssistant system, which will be so much more convenient

Recent #SmartHome developments around #MyQ garage door opener and Philips #Hue lights just demonstrate the importance of #OpenStandards and protocols as well as of free as in freedom software. When a device implements an open standard/protocol, e.g., #Zigbee, you are free to choose any implementation available, including a #FreeSoftware implementation, e.g., #HomeAssistant, that is under your instead of vendor's control.
Choose smartly your smart home devices!

With #HomeAssistant no longer being able to operate #MyQ openers, it makes me wonder:
Would a simple learning RF module like the Broadlink RM4 Pro be capable of "learning" the signal being sent from a wireless garage door opener to operate it? I know the communication channel is encrypted, but it's just a shower thought I can't seem to eject from my head. If it *could* work like that, you could hack together your own garage door opener with that and a door sensor to check if the door is open.
-
How could this happen? Owners of #Chamberlain #MyQ automatic garage door openers just woke up to discover that the company had confiscated valuable features overnight, and that there was nothing they could do about it.

I already bought my #Meross kit. Fuck #Chamberlain and their #myQ garbage.

Buh bye #myq . I've got a pair of ratdgo modules to install this weekend.

Ooops Homebridge, not sure this is the right response - retrying every 3 seconds seems like a good way to GET me locked out....

My excitement over getting #MyQ on my garage has faded: no support for siri, ios shortcuts, alexa… annoyingly siloed

@nguerrera Unless it's changed recently, there are a few services you can connect to #MyQ for free. Offhand I forget which ones, but they're in their app. This and similar reasons are why my home automation is a heterogenous mess of services that, fortunately, do all work through my #SmartThings hub (pre-Matter, but that may help future devices).

A big 🖕to #myq and #tesla, who have finally enabled an integration that lets me control my garage door from the car…if I pay $45/yr for it.
I mean I can (and do!) make it work with location data from my phone and #homeassitant but the model of “we’ll build 2 walled gardens and then charge a subscription to connect them (badly and 5 years too late)” fills me with rage.
