  8. Blog: I Went to a New Age Expo (Stranger in a Strange Land) – Why are There so Many Kids Here? And What’s with Reincarnation?

Welp, it’s that time of year again. The birds are chirping, the flowers are coming up, the dang mosquitos are back for no other reason than to spite us, and the weather is as indecisive as Taylor Swift where it can’t decide what it wants to be. In other words, its spring, and that means that my local New Age expo is back in town, which means y’all get to hear about the madness.

This expo is one of four this year, with two happening in spring, one happening in mid-summer, and the last in early fall. However, from what I’ve heard from the people who went in previous years, the one we went to was the biggest one of the year. That said, I wasn’t surprised about the sheer number of people who were there. The convention hall was super crowded, but one of the things I wasn’t expecting about the crowd was how many kids were there. The majority of the crowd was female, so it was only natural that there would be some moms, but I wasn’t expecting the moms to bring their kids, ages ranging from babies to pre-teens. I saw one little boy holding a crystal wand in each hand as he sat and meditated at a booth, for crying out loud.

I can’t tell what’s worse: kids running around at Sephora, or kids running around at the New Age Expo. At least Sephora doesn’t have several booths selling psilocybin.

But besides the absurd number of kids there, the main thing that my family’s conversations with people revolved around was reincarnation. Now, I’ll stick to the three most interesting conversations we had with the people there for the sake of brevity, but all three are weird.

The first person we talked to was a lady who identified as Roman Catholic and believed in various Masters of Wisdom, particularly that Jesus is the Master of Love and Buddha is the Master of Wisdom. Further, she believed in perennial wisdom, which is the belief that there was once an ultimate truth or religion that got turned into the various beliefs and religions held by everyone today. Thus, everyone is on their own path to the ultimate source of everything as they gradually figure out and accept that they have the divine spark within them and reach enlightenment over the course of thousands or millions of reincarnation cycles.

She also believed that since everyone gets reincarnated, they basically have infinite attempts to get it right. If the planet blows up in the meantime, that’s fine. You’ll get transferred to a different planet. And if you do get it right and become some sort of super enlightened spiritual master, you can get transferred to another planet to help other people reach their enlightenment. Doesn’t that sound fun?

Now, for those of you who have read the Bible, you might be slightly confused about who the heck Jesus is to this lady and how He fits into her belief system. After all, she was saying that he’s one of the various Masters you can follow while the Bible says that He’s your only shot to Heaven. Well, when I brought up John 14:6 when Jesus says, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me,” she said that Jesus is essentially the most enlightened person ever. He’s the gatekeeper to reaching God, so as the Master of Love, He’s the highest standard for everyone to follow to reach their divine spark.

Of course, that is not at all what Jesus meant in the Bible, but this is how she was interpreting it to fit with her worldview.

But that leaves the question of how Jesus reached such a high enlightenment status that He could claim to be God. According to her, it was through being unconditionally loving, thus reaching His full potential through the divine spark within, because God is love, whatever that’s defined as. It’s not like according to the Bible, while God is loving and merciful, He’s also just and must rain down His wrath on those who break His law or anything.

Overall, the path to the ultimate truth according to her was by being unconditionally loving and by following whatever truth fits you…which is entirely subjective and contradictory.

Another interesting conversation I had was with a member of what’s possibly the most obvious pseudo-Christian cult I’ve ever seen. This cult is called the Church of Shambhala Vajradhara Maitreya Sangha, and its leader is a dude who calls himself Buddha Maitreya and claims to be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. As such, he believes that it’s his job to restore the Noosphere through Christ consciousness, amongst other things.

But what is the Noosphere? I’ll let him explain:

The Noosphere is the planetary sphere of mind or thinking layer of the planet Earth. To grasp the idea of the Noosphere, we must elevate our consciousness and open ourselves to the most general, elemental, and cosmic principles of life on Earth.

The Noosphere is the next stage in the evolution of human consciousness. As the mental sheathe of the planet, the Noosphere characterizes mind and consciousness as a unitary phenomenon. This means that the quality and nature of our individual and collective thoughts directly affects the Noosphere and creates the quality of our environment – the biosphere.

The historic process is changing dramatically before our eyes … Mankind taken as a whole is becoming a powerful geological force. Humanity’s mind and work face the problem of reconstructing the biosphere in the interests of freely thinking Mankind as a single entity. This new state of the world we are approaching without noticing it, it is the ‘Noosphere’.

The return of Christ as the fulfillment of the Noosphere as well as the consummation of the universe. According to the Law of Time, the end of linear time begins the time of the Noosphere and the return of Christ Consciousness.

But when will the return of Christ be if this dude is claiming to be the reincarnation of Christ? According to the lady I was talking to, who was a nun for this cult, the first coming occurred when Jesus came in His original body. After He died and was resurrected, she then said that He went to India (where He also spent His early years between 12 and 30), married, and somewhere along the line, was reincarnated in various forms, which is the second coming.

If you’re confused, I am too.

I asked her how that lined up with what the Bible (which she claimed to have read) says about the return of Jesus and how everyone will see Him and every knee will bow. Her response, like with many of the other questions I asked her, was, “I’m just a student.”

Some of the other questions I asked her included:

1). “Do you believe the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are the actual teachings of Jesus during His first coming?”

2). “What evidence is there that Buddha Maitreya is the reincarnation of Jesus Christ?”

3). “If karma is real,” – (they believe in karma) – “then if a woman is raped, then does she deserve it for something bad that she did in a past life?”

4). “What defines good and bad, or your concept of ‘virtue’?”

5). “What happens after we die? Do I get reincarnated or do I get to break out of that cycle?”

6). “If we’re constantly being reincarnated, then what purpose is there in repenting and following this guy if I’m still, maybe, going to get reincarnated?”

The answers to questions 4-6 could be summed up as, “I don’t know,” as she kept telling me, “I’m just a student. It’s better to hear ‘Jesus’ speak.” The other three questions, however, she did try to answer. On the first one, she said that while Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were okay about Jesus’ ministry, but it’s better to hear from Buddha Maitreya himself. Additionally, her group mainly focuses on the “Lost Gospels.” The Lost Gospels are basically a theory that Jesus, in the 18 years that we know next to nothing about between His childhood and ministry, went to India, did some stuff there, and travelled back to Israel to His thing. Of course, there’s no solid historical evidence for this, but this is what they roll with.

On my second question, her response was that some anonymous pastor/theologian in South Africa said that Buddha Maitreya was Jesus after listening to him. And with the third question, she just brushed that off entirely as absurd.

I hope y’all can detect the issues with her apologetic for this cult. If it wasn’t saying “I don’t know” or deflecting, it’s based on completely unverifiable sources or unsupported theories. It got to a point where we were both getting frustrated, her with the questions, and me with the lack of answers. Finally, she directed me to Buddha Maitreya’s YouTube channel, and I may do a deep dive post on him and his cult eventually.

Finally, the last person I’ll mention here is a dude I’m just going to call Wyatt. Originally, we thought he was a Wiccan, but actually, he was closer to a Luciferian. There are different types of Luciferians out there, but in his case, he believed that we are gods who came from some source that we later called “God,” and that we need to realize that we’re God to eventually reach our full potential as god at some point. Thus, Wyatt believed that he’s a god and that he can help other people reach their god-ness.

As we continued to question this belief, though, Wyatt started getting visibly flustered to the point where his neck was so red and splotchy that I was wondering if he was having an allergic reaction to something. Thankfully, we were able to end the conversation when my dad informed Mom and I that he had finally located a family friend who was also doing evangelism there.

So, that was my experience with the New Agers this time around. It’s honestly a depressing look at how easily people are deceived as long as they can feel like they are in control.

    Until next time,

    M.J.

  10. Krishnamurti on How Not to Be Born Again

Jiddu Krishnamurti viewed the idea of being “born again” (reincarnation) as a continuity of the “me”—the bundle of memories, conditioning, and thought-based self-interest. He argued that true freedom is not about manipulating future lives, but about ending the continuity of this self in the present moment.

Here is how Krishnamurti described not being “born again,” which he called “real incarnation” or dying while living:

    1. Die to the Past Daily
Krishnamurti taught that “death” is the ending of everything accumulated, such as wounds, pains, and memories.

Ending the “Me”: Reincarnation is the continuation of thought-based consciousness. To not be born again is to stop this continuity.

Dying Now: You must “die” to your attachments, conditioning, and personality every day. “Die to everything of yesterday, so that your mind is always fresh, young, innocent, full of vigour and passion”.

Total Negation: The mind must strip itself of all knowledge and conditioning.

    1. End Conflict in the Present
Krishnamurti maintained that the future is built by the present, so changing the future depends entirely on “what is” today.

Immediate Action: “Incarnate today, afresh – not in the next life!”.

No Postponement: Hoping for a better next life is a postponement of tackling one’s inner chaos.

Remaining with “What Is”: Conflict ends when you observe your greed or jealousy as a fact without trying to change it into its opposite (like non-violence).

    1. Dissolve the “Self”
The “self” is a bundle of memories and thoughts, which creates a center that perpetuates itself.

No Center: When the mind is free from the center (the “I”), it is free from the limitations of time and memory.

Total Observation: When you observe the self-centered activity of the mind with total attention, that observation brings its own ending.

    1. Empty the Mind
For something totally new to emerge, the mind must be silent, which is only possible when it is empty of the known.

Silence of the Mind: “A mind that has understood the whole movement of thought becomes extraordinarily quiet, absolutely silent. That silence is the beginning of the new”.

No Method: You cannot use a method, system, or discipline to achieve this, as those are tools of thought that strengthen the self.

In summary, Krishnamurti’s way of not being born again is to live with such total attention and awareness that the “me” dies completely in each moment, leaving the mind fresh, silent, and new, without the burden of the past.

    Seven Lucky Gods

In Japanese mythology, the 7 Lucky Gods that are believed to grant good luck & are often represented in netsuke & in artwork. Netsuke is a miniature sculpture, beginning in 17th century Japan. 1 of the 7, Jurojin, is said to be based on an actual historical figure.

These deities mostly have their roots as ancient gods of fortune from religions popular in Japan like: from Mahayana Buddhism (Benzaiten, Bishamonten, Daikokuten, Hotei), which came to Japan via China but began in India; & from Chinese Taoism (Fukurokuju & Jurojin); the last 1 (Ebisu) is has a Japanese native ancestry.

In the beginning, these gods were worshipped by merchants as the first 2 (Ebisu & Daikokuten) were gods of business & trade. Other classes of Japanese society looked for gods that could parallel with their professions: Benzaiten as the patron of the arts, Fukurokuju as the patron of the sciences, etc.

In ancient times, these gods were worshipped separately. This rarely happens today. Only when it’s required for the specific god to act on behalf of the applicant.

The 7 Gods of Fortune started being mentioned as a collective in 1420 in Fushimi. This was in order to imitate the processions of the feudal lords, daimyos, of pre-modern Japan.

It’s said that Buddhist priest, Tenkai, picked these gods after speaking with the shogun he served, Iemitsu Tokugawa. This was at the order of seeking whoever possessed the perfect virtues: longevity, fortune, popularity, sincerity, kindness, dignity, & magnanimity. Shortly after this, Kano Yasunobu, a famous artist of the time.

    List of the deities:

    • Ebisu: From the era of the gods Izanami & Izanagi, Ebisu is the only 1 whose beginnings are purely Japanese. He’s the god of prosperity & wealth in business, & of plenitude & abundance in crops, cereals, & food in general. He’s the patron of fishermen & is shown with fishermen’s costumes such as a typical hat, a fishing rod in his right hand & a fish that is either a carp, a hake, a codfish, a sea bass, or any large fish. In general, that symbolizes abundance in meals, like a feast or banquet. It’s now common to see his figure in restaurants where fish is served in huge amounts of in household kitchens.
    • Daikokuten: He’s the God of commerce & prosperity. He’s sometimes considered the patron of cooks, farmers, bankers, & a protector of crops. He’s also considered a demon hunter. Legend says that the god Daikokuten hung a talisman on the branch of a tree in his garden &, by using this as a trap, was able to catch a demon. This god is known for his smile, his short legs, & the hat on his head. He’s usually shown with a bag full of valuable objects. Daikokuten’s popular imagery started as a syncretic conflation of the Buddhist death deity, Mahakala, with the Shinto deity, Okuninushi. Syncretic conflation is a blending of different belief systems practices or traditions into a new, single, & often confusing or contradictory whole. The Japanese name Daikoku is a direct translation of the Sanskrit name Mahakala, which means “Great Blackness.” Per the Butsuzozui compendium of 1690, Daikoku can also manifest as a female known as Daikokunyo (literally, She of Great Blackness) or Daikokutennyo (literally, She of Great Blackness of the Heavens).
    • Bishamonten: Bishamonten’s origins can be traced back to Hinduism. But he has been adopted into Japanese culture. He comes from the Hindu god Kubera & is also from the name Vaisravana. He’s the god of fortune in war & battles. He’s also connected with authority & dignity. He’s the protector of those who follow the rules & behave properly. As the patron of fighters, he was represented dressed in armor & a helmet. He’s often seen carrying a pagoda. He also acts the protector of holy sites & important places & wields a spear to fight against the evil spirits. He’s usually shown in pictures with a hoop of fire.
    • Benzaiten: Benzaiten’s origin is found in Hinduism. As she comes from the Hindu goddess Saraswati. She’s the only Fukujin in modern grouping. She’s named in a number of ways: Benzaiten, Benten, Bentensama, or Benzaitennyo. When she was adapted from Buddhism, she was given the qualities of financial fortune, talent, beauty, & music among others. Often she shows up with a Torii. She’s depicted as a smart, beautiful woman with all the aforementioned attributes. She carries a biwa, a Japanese traditional lute-like instrument, & is normally accompanied by a white snake. She’s the patron of artists, writers, dances, & geisha.
    • Jurojin: He’s considered the incarnation of the southern pole star, Jurojin, is the god of the elderly & of longevity in Japanese Buddhist mythology. It’s said that the legendary Juroujin is based on a real person who lived in ancient times. He was approximately 1.82 meters (or 5.97 feet) tall with a very long head. Besides his unique skull, he’s shown with a long white beard, riding a deer, & is often accompanied by a 1500-year crane (the bird) & a tortoise. These are symbols of his affinity with long lives. In addition, he is usually represented under a peach tree. The fruit of this tree is considered, by Chinese Taoism, being able to prolong life. In his hand, he holds a crane & a book or a scroll. The wisdom of the world remains written in its pages. Jurojin enjoys rice & wine &is a very cheerful figure.
    • Hotei: He’s the god of fortune, guardian of children, patron of diviners, & barmen. He’s also the god of popularity. He’s shown as a fat, smiling, bald man with a curly moustache. He always appears half-naked. His clothes aren’t wide enough to cover his huge belly. He blessed the Chinese. They nicknamed him “Cho-Tei-Shi” or “Ho-Tei-Shi,” meaning ‘bag of old clothes.’ Hotei was a Zen priest. His looks & some of his actions were against their moral code. His looks made him look like a naughty person & he didn’t have a fixed place to sleep. He carries a bag on his shoulders. The bag was loaded with fortunes for those who believe in his virtues. Hotei’s traits & virtues are contentment, magnanimity, & happiness. Hotei’s original Chinese name was Kaishi. According to legend, he passed away in March 916. The Japanese began to believe in Hotei during the Edo era. The reasoning for why the Japanese have such a great respect for this god comes from a legend that says that, before Zen Buddhism came to Japan, an alternative Buddhist thought was extended by a priest of suspicious aesthetic, who was actually was a manifestation of Miroku. Miroku was the patron of those who couldn’t be saved by the beliefs of Buddha. Hotei was later observed & accepted by the Japanese as a 2nd Miroku.
    • Fukurokuju: (Sometimes omitted) The god Fukurokuju also has his beginnings in China. It’s believed that he used to be a hermit during the Chinese Song dynasty. He’s distinguished for being a reincarnation of the Taoist god, Hsuan-wu. He’s the god of wisdom, luck, longevity, wealth, & happiness. This god receives certain credits, such as being 1 of the Chinese philosophers who could live without eating called breatharian. He’s the only god who was said to have the ability to resurrect the dead. Fukurokuju is portrayed by the size of his head, being almost as large as the size of his whole body. He’s represented wearing traditional Chinese costumes. He normally carries a cane in 1 hand & a scroll with writings about the world in the other hand. He’s usually accompanied by a turtle, a crow, or a deer. These animals are frequently used in Japan to symbolize a long life. It’s also said that he likes to play chess. He’s the patron of chess players. The characteristics of Fukurokuju & Jurojin overlap as they both trace back to the Chinese Taoist deity. Nanjilaoren, which is why Fukurokuju’s position is sometimes granted instead to the goddess Kichijoten, as in Butsuzosui compendium of 1783. The Butsuzosui compendium is a collection of Buddhist iconographic sketches said to have been painted by Hidenobu Tosa of the Tosa school. Originally published in 1690 in 5 volumes.
    • Kichijoten: (Sometimes omitted) She’s also known as Kisshoten or Kisshoutennyo. She was adapted via Buddhism from the Hindu goddess Lakshmi. Kisshoten has the traits of beauty, happiness, & fertility. In the 1783 edition of the Butsuzozui compendium, Kichijoten replaced Fukurokuju as 1 of the Fukujin. Kichijoten’s iconography is distinguished from the other Fukujin goddesses by the Nyoihiju gem in her hand. When Kichijoten replaces Fukurokuju, & Daikoku is regarded in feminine form, all 3 of the Hindu Tridevi goddesses are then represented among the 7 Fukujin.

During the first 3 days of the New Year, the 7 Lucky Gods are said to pilot through the Heavens the Takarabune or Treasure Ship. A picture of the ship forms an essential part of traditional Japanese New Year celebrations.

#Reading was down this month, I'm not sure why. Maybe five months of elevated reading times after getting the Kobo Sage and installing KOReader is just wearing off. Instead of doing two full novels each week and filling in with shorter works, I'll try doing just one.

⬙ = Atlantis and Lemuria: 13 Classic Tales
⬖ = Glass and Gardens: Solarpunk Summers

[1] Another #koReader first. Longest title, at 49 characters long: Grover: Case #C09 920, “The Most Dangerous Blend”. This meant stretching a 106-screen (39p in original epub) over five days. I'll just shorten calendar names henceforth; in this case that would have been "Dangerous Blend" at two days wide.

[2] H Rider Haggard's _When the World Shook_ (1919) was very similar to Erle Cox's _Out of the Silence_ (1919 serialized, 1925 novel).

_Shook_ has two people, a young woman and an older man, found underground in crystal coffins; they were in suspended animation from 250,000 years ago, the man claims. The man was a ruler, and expresses a desire to wipe out the lesser civilization of today, as he did those who refused to bow to him in the past. The woman and the man who found her fall in love. Both ancient individuals die in the end.

_Silence_ had a man find an underground metal chamber. After getting past the booby traps, he awakens a young woman from ancient, pre-catacylsmic times. (The older man is later found in another sphere.) Again, the older man plans to rule Earth, and the woman falls for the modern man. Both ancient individuals die in the end.

I liked _Out of the Silence_ better. No third of the book wasted in setup. It also has more of a point: Both the ancient young woman and the old man are casually racist against "the coloured races," but the narrator is not, and it's clear the point is to highlight how European colonists are mistreating indigenous Australians.

_When the World Shook_ has the young woman sacrificing herself to save the world, and the man she loves. It turns out that, when suspended, your soul is free to be reincarnated. The modern man who found her contains the soul of the man she loved, whom her father had killed because he was a commoner leading the revolt of the masses against the "Children of Wisdom" who ruled them. And the modern man's wife, who died early in the book, was the most recent receptacle of the ancient woman's soul.

Oh, by the way, the word "Atlantis" shows up exactly once in the novel, and only in a "I heard of another place that was destroyed and submerged beneath the waves" sense. It's not used to describe where the sleepers came from.

  18. We really need to stop calling obvious schizophrenia, manic delusions, and psychosis ‘unverified personal gnosis.’ A person whom I knew 15 years ago has persistent beliefs, regardless of facts, that they knew me in a past life and we made some pact to alter the future to save the world from Nazis. It’s insane, but everyone in the occult Discord is nodding their heads and validating it.

A delusion is a persistent belief regardless of facts. This person has dreams and hallucinations that they believe are gods, spirits, and telepathy. In these hallucinations and delusions, the spirits tell them who random strangers were in a past life. A lot of these delusions are obviously paranoid and inevitably roll into a conspiracy theory about Nazis. This is very terrifying. This means, based on a random occurrence with a person, they will create a parasocial narrative that manifests as them knowing this person.

Most schizophrenia delusions emerge from noise and thus have no actual information. You can uncover that it is a delusion by asking the person for details. For example, if they make a claim about remembering a past life in Egypt, you can do the equivalent of asking them who the President of the United States is now. I did that with this person. They were claiming to have known me and other people in a past life in Egypt 3000 years ago, so I looked up what was going on around that time. I asked them who the high priest was, who the pharaoh was, and what they remember happening around that time. All of it was wrong.

That caused most of that Discord to jump all over me and imply that it was fine because it was their personal gnosis. To be clear, this person is creating parasocial relationships and narratives based on delusional narratives that they are applying to random people they meet.

Phrasing things as they happened in a different reality or a past life is a way to avoid the falsification of and is a way to rationalize the delusion. Claiming that you knew a person in a past life is a way to justify the parasocial relationship. It is not unverified personal gnosis. It’s mental illness. There is nothing magical about mental illness. If I had a nickel for every time a schizophrenic occultist spun up a delusional narrative to justify an adversarial parasocial relationship with me, I’d be rich. This is a major problem.
