  1. No One Dies Lying

On the twenty-second of May, 1929, at Fort Riley, Kansas, a woman named Zenana Shepard sent her nurse to a closet for a bottle of bootleg whiskey. She said the liquor had a strange smell and a strange taste, and she asked whether enough remained in the bottle to test it for poison. Then she said the sentence that would outlive her by four years and travel all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States: "Dr. Shepard has poisoned me." The doctor was her husband, Charles A. Shepard, a major in the Army medical corps, and the government would later argue he had salted that whiskey with bichloride of mercury because he loved a woman named Grace Brandon and his wife declined to divorce him. Zenana Shepard died on the fifteenth of June. Her husband was convicted of her murder, and her sentence, the spoken one, did much of the convicting. […]

  12. And I find it really hard to read people posting about making life worth living instead. My dad died of pulmonary fibrosis, suffocating to death over two years hooked up permanently to oxygen. The last few months were agonising. People saying this haven't a clue how much some suffer. It is so cruel. #AssistedDying #Scotland #NHS #Health #PalliativeCare #Politics

  14. Very sad to see the Scottish assisted dying bill voted against. Thinking of my dad tonight, and those like him, who suffered cruel and prolonged deaths from terminal disease, with totally inadequate palliative care, and would have dearly liked the option of assisted dying legislation. #AssistedDying #Scotland #NHS #Health #PalliativeCare #Politics

  16. I thought this article interesting as I've cause to be thinking about the topic lately. "Expanding palliative care’s remit might make the prospect of a good death — unhastened, managed, comfortable and with minimal physical pain — a preferable alternative to the heroic battle to the end."
What the article didn't really touch on is the presence and needs of those living with or with close bonds to the person dying.
It had me wondering whether as a society we should be making provision for 'palliative care leave' in a similar way to parental leave to care for a newborn.
