The Mystic and the Missing Girl by Vikki VanSickle

This is a small-town cozy mystery with a paranormal twist.

When Drew Benson inherited her aunt’s new age shop, she didn’t expect to get pulled into a twenty-year-old mystery.

Drew’s aunt Hannah had psychic abilities and when a local girl disappeared, Hannah tried to help the police. She gave the police three words that she felt were connected to the missing girl. The words were Lake, Saint, and Geranium. The police were never able to connect the dots. Eventually the search was called off, and the girl was never found. Hannah became known as a fraud.

Now that Drew has moved into her apartment above the shop, she has found that she enjoys owning the business but so far, she isn’t able to make it work. The customers have never come back.

Drew is considering selling, like her mother thinks she should until someone from high school who has gone on to become a journalist for a large newspaper shows up. He intends to write a twentieth anniversary story about the missing girl.

Drew hasn’t told anyone that she too has psychic abilities. She can hold objects and get a vision. She does so for the journalist and he convinces her that she could help him investigate the cold case. He believes they can get the story and clear her aunt’s name.

While digging through her aunt’s notes from the investigation, she discovers that her aunt didn’t share all the information with the police. There was a fourth word, Drew. Somehow Drew has a connection with the missing girl and knowing that makes it easier for her to be the catalyst to solving the mystery.

This is a beautifully written story that pulled me in and I thoroughly enjoyed the wild ride. I think this will be one of my favorite books for the year.

It’s a dark and stormy night as I write this review. We had 70 mph bursts of wind going through earlier and rain that is causing flash flooding in some areas. As I write, I can see the rain pattering on the windows and hear the low rumble of thunder in the distance. It’s supposed to do this most of the night.

Soon I will be cozy in bed with a book. What about you?

Hi, I'm Bea. I seem to be leading a highly squiggly life that's led me through a wild range of experiences, has, at this point been going on for Some Time, and fortunately shows no signs of stopping yet.

I'm also a #vegan (for the animals) #trans shapeshifter practising #nonMonogamy, and am gay for girls of most genders and apparently now the occasional boy. If this feels like rubbing it in your face, feel free to move your face.

I have an overdeveloped sense of justice, but only compared to your average late capitalist human, and the kind of highly spicy brain you'd expect from, uh, well, all of the above.

I'm afraid things are likely only going to get weirder from here.

I was a bit surprised that psychic Char Margolis came out with the book You Are Psychic, recently. Is she trying to give away the game of being a psychic? After all, once you know her methods can’t you just be a psychic for yourself and get rid of any outside psychics?

Then I became really excited by her book. Perhaps she is coming out with the real book of psychics where she tells us the secrets of magicians, mentalists and faith healers as well as the related secrets of psychics that we could all use to help us defraud the world in general. Then I thought about it again. The world just isn’t ready to hear all that.

As to the You Are Psychic gimmick to earn readers, I’m just not feeling it. This book just doesn’t speak to me so I’m afraid it will be a pass from me in buying it. I listen to my gut and my gut says no.

But what if it were true and I could bring out my inner psychic just by reading some book. What would I do with such all encompassing power?

Well I don’t know what all I would do, but I can tell you the first thing I would do. I would firstly ask if Char is short for Charlotte, Charlene, Charlise or Charmaine. Or maybe it is a short form for a name that is more gender bending like Charlemagne or Charlie. Then, indeed, it might not be a short form at all but a complete name of four letters. Whatever. With all the psychic abilities Char Margolis is unleashing on this world, we will soon have an answer for this.

So, if you use some google fu to find out the secret of Char’s name, don’t tell me that. Pretend you have psychic abilities and I am missing out on reading this step by step psychic guide. After all, maybe this book would speak to me if I bought the Audible version.
