15. Invicta’s Winged Shield
While I wasn’t able to find any official name for the Invicta logo in my research, I decided it was a winged shield. The company has existed in some fashion since 1837 (lot’s of seven’s in birth years for companies on this list), with it’s birth in Switzerland. However, now Invicta is American owned and with their current ‘catalog’ of themed watches & brand collabs along with some of the most garish watches in existence, it’s a company that has strayed about as far away from its origins as it could while still being in the same industry.
While I am not a fan of Invicta’s watches or business practices and will never own another after owning 2, their logo is of a classic motif. It has a central image and a depiction of wings to either side, very reminiscent of brands like Longines, Breitling and even a few car companies.
The current iteration is identifiable as Invicta even with the similarities to other logos, it evokes a certain heritage, scales up & down pretty well and does look pretty snazzy on a watch dial.

Jahrhundert neu verstanden wurden, aber den meisten Menschen noch unbekannt sind.

16. Cartier; the two interlocking ‘C’s.
From all the Cartier watches I’ve seen online, I assumed the ‘Cartier’ wordmark was their logo & while doing research for the other logos on my list, I was surprised to learn that the Cartier logo is actually the interlocking ‘C’s for their founder’s initials. I do like the logo enough to have included it here, but because it is not immediately known as the logo (due to Cartier using it in conjunction with or replacing it altogether with their wordmark or panther iconography), that drops it significantly down the list.
What do you think? Does the Orient logo make your list as a favorite or as a not-favorite?

Philologist Erik Ellis has thought a lot about logos, and says that the best English translation he has found for logos is "account". Both a bank account and to give an account of last night is about recounting the events that led to the current situation, to tell a story.
Amusingly the way Ellis was describing "account" made me think of the word "log", the way it is used in computing and on ships, and it took me an embarrassing moment to notice the similarity between "logos" and "log", but etymologically they're entirely unrelated as the latter comes from tree log, which has old Norse roots.
It's just another funny, accidental etymological convergence.

I found this in a little box tonight — an early logo of mine for Sensations in Grand Forks, North Dakota, back when the world was much smokier. In retrospect, I wish I had used a different yet complementary typeface for the second line, but it did the job.
