Das apokryphe Judasevangelium ist im Umfeld der Gnosis entstanden. In ihm wird Judas als ein einzig Wissender, Guter, sich Opfernder unter den Jüngern dargestellt, der durch seinen Verrat Jesus erst ermöglichte, sein Erlösungswerk am Kreuz zu vollenden. Doch es war keineswegs notwendig, dass sich wider dem "Heiligen Gottes" (Lk 4:34) der Verrat erhebt, damit der Wille Gottes geschieht. Das Bild von Judas mag andererseits auch dem Wunsch entsprochen haben für das quälende Schicksal Jesu einen Schuldigen zu finden und in dessen Verurteilung man den zuinnerst gefühlten Vorwurf an die Juden, an eigenes Versagen, los wurde.

Aber all diese verwickelten psychologisierenden Gedankengänge sind der Hl. Schrift fremd. Sie gehen aus einer gnostischen romantischen Philosophie des Bösen hervor, widersprechen dem Geist der Offenbarung.
