Testing Fountain Pen Inks
Question: has anyone done extensive testing on any fountain pen inks?
I don’t mean the standard Mountain of Ink style, sample card, writing sample, etc. visual comparisons. (I’d like to call this subjective measurement, but chromatographic measurements aren’t subjective if done in a controlled manner.)
I am thinking more objective testing: viscosity, density, flow rate @ a given line width, etc.
I was thinking about this type of testing tonight, and it seems to me that there are a lot of factors that would need to be controlled: temperature, air pressure / barometric pressure, nib consistency, friction (aka heat), etc. Given what I was thinking this could be an interesting experiment, if someone wanted to undertake controlling all the variables, and implementing the controls necessary for consistent results.

The so-called #audiophile community is famous for the amount of #woo that passes for knowledge or expertise.
When you look at the DIY audio community - building things up from #electronic components or modules - you add in the cargo-cult processes used by people with no basic electronics knowledge building these things, and the false-but-confident beliefs of those with some knowledge but more assurance of their own intelligence 🙄 - and you get some real doozies in discussion threads [1] on audio/electronics fora.
I just came across one that will stick with me:
A: I saw some people are doing <X> to increase the bass from this little amp. Should I do it?
B (actually knowledgeable): Depends on the design. If it's lacking <Y>, it can help the subjective bass response of the amp.
C (overly confident): BS! OBJECTIVELY (!) you get more and better boom.
Boom-boom, you know? Your guts will tell you the objective truth.... that is LITERALLY the definition of "subjective". 🤣

The funny thing about social constructs is that they bring two distinct meanings of the (extremely problematic) term "objective" into direct conflict.
Specifically, the meaning of 'objective' that is "existing intrinsically, plainly detectable, clearly segmentable from its immediate environs, etc. etc." and the meaning of 'objective' that is "agreed upon by all members of a group, etc. etc."
What makes a social construct a construct is that it has no physical particulars, is not plainly detectable, cannot be clearly segmented away from its immediate environs (if it can even be said to have immediate environs), i.e. it is not an 'objectively existing entity', and in fact it's entire existence consists of the 'objective' agreement or objectively held belief that it exists.
So, that's what humans are like, if you were wondering why things are shit.
Humans are all about those 'objectively' non-existing 'objective' existences.
Ugh.
p.s. in case you were wondering, both those senses of 'objective' are pretty much bollocks.
