Sunday is for baking bread and testing / comparing microphones. Maybe at some point I can do a comparison video. Nerd alert!
The small inconspicuous microphone in the first photo is a Bartlett nyckelharpa mic I got second hand. Bartlet is an US based company.
Normally, I use a DPA 4099 mic for live playing and I'm quite happy with it. DPA is a Danish company. The DPA sounds very natural but also VERY bright which can get unpleasant with an instrument so rich in overtones. Otherwise it is pretty much plug and play. Nowadays it comes at a pretty high cost of around 600€ and it looks a bit fragile, but mine has been holding up great for many years now.
The DPA is a swan neck mic and comes with a velcro strap that you awkwardly wrap around the tailpiece. Positioning is difficult and it can get in the way sometimes if you want to use pizzicato. I have definitely bumped into it on accident in the past 🙈
The Bartlett also sounds very natural but much warmer out of the box, maybe even a bit muffled. But with the right positioning and a bit of EQing in the high end it could be a very nice alternative! I love that you can just wedge it under the stringholder with a piece of foam and it is almost invisible. It looks very sturdy and costs only around 200€ (keep in mind shipping costs and tariffs esp to Europe!).
In all other regards they are very much the same. Both are condesor mics, both need phantom power. Cheers!

Victory! #Flock Ends Rollout of Audio “Distress Detection” of Human #Voices
Reversing course, #FlockSafety —the #surveillance technology vendor most known for its extensive network of automated #licensePlate readers—has announced that it will end a pilot for its acoustic #gunshot detection devicesto identify signs of “human distress.”
In October 2025, @eff warned the public that Flock was rolling out a new feature called “#DistressDetection ” that would be deployed through their acoustic gunshot detection devices (formerly known as #FlockRaven , now called #AudioDetection ). This feature purported to use high-powered #microphones scattered throughout a city to search for sounds of human distress, with original advertisements from the product indicating it would search for “#screaming.” (Since the publication of our original blog post, Flock quietly amended the ad on this webpage to say “distress” instead of “screaming.”)
