Reversing course, #FlockSafety —the #surveillance technology vendor most known for its extensive network of automated #licensePlate readers—has announced that it will end a pilot for its acoustic #gunshot detection devicesto identify signs of “human distress.”
In October 2025, @eff warned the public that Flock was rolling out a new feature called “#DistressDetection ” that would be deployed through their acoustic gunshot detection devices (formerly known as #FlockRaven , now called #AudioDetection ). This feature purported to use high-powered #microphones scattered throughout a city to search for sounds of human distress, with original advertisements from the product indicating it would search for “#screaming.” (Since the publication of our original blog post, Flock quietly amended the ad on this webpage to say “distress” instead of “screaming.”)

I was trying to get a cheap shotgun mic to field record foley, birds and stuff. I bought a #Boya PVM-1000 or VM-1000N (labeling is inconsistent). It's a piece of trash. Came broken from the factory as well. Not only is the off-axis sound rejection extremely poor to the point where sometimes I can't tell the difference between 90 degrees off axis and 180 degrees off. The high-pass filter cuts at 1 kHz and the shock mount does nothing.

The receptionist slid a tablet across the counter and asked, in the bright tone reserved for upgrades, whether I would consent to let the clinic "AI Listen" to the appointment. Percy and Lotty, The Boles Brits, were already complaining inside their carrier, due for the rabies shots the state requires. The pitch was efficiency. The software would listen to my conversation with the veterinarian, transcribe it, and "ambient scribe" the care notes so the doctor could spend less time typing and more time with the animals. I would really like to build two more U87 clones. There is a guy out there who has copied the original Neumann transformer perfectly, right down to the metallurgy of the core, and there is a woman who has perfectly cloned the original capsules. I found a guy in the UK who makes very high quality bodies that I used in my first build.
My Build 1 mics are VERY high quality, but Build 2 will be exactly as good as what Neumann was making in 1976 or so.

The old, saggy-ass elastic bands in the shock mount for my AKG C414 are beyond useless at this point. I recently tried to buy new ones at the local Long & McQuade but they had to do a “special order.” They subsequently phoned me to say the elastics are $19.99 each. So $45.18 all in.
For 2 elastic bands.
So that’s a no.I see that one of those sketchy Ali Express sites has them for like 6 bucks.
I dunno.

Kinda panic bought a whole bunch of #audio equipment in preparation, but for next time I need to track down a decent inexpensive preamp for dynamic #microphones. This time I'll have to denoise the audio in post.

My 16 yr old son and his band (they’re VERY good) have been writing original songs for about a year now.
They are immensely talented, & their songs are WELL beyond their years.Now, they’ve started the immensely difficult task of trying to record them, & properly. And as talented as they are, they don’t know much about that part, & have been getting by with the gear they’ve got.
On their few first demos, they used shitty mics for the vocals that ARENT meant for vocals, & are trying to navigate post-effects, mixing, & ALL that fun stuff.
With this, I decided to make them a proper studio in my son’s room where they work.
So…I went out & bought them their own mic stand, pop filter, AT 2020 condenser mic, and two SM57 mics (because they sure as shit weren’t getting any of MY gear 😂).
Now, as far as vocals and mic’ing amps go, they’re good.
As far as mixing goes, they’ll find their way.Had to APE TEST everything first though. 😂
