I was trying to get a cheap shotgun mic to field record foley, birds and stuff. I bought a #Boya PVM-1000 or VM-1000N (labeling is inconsistent). It's a piece of trash. Came broken from the factory as well. Not only is the off-axis sound rejection extremely poor to the point where sometimes I can't tell the difference between 90 degrees off axis and 180 degrees off. The high-pass filter cuts at 1 kHz and the shock mount does nothing.

And all working again. In the end it was only the rotary encoder. Took it apart, gave it some contact spray and that seems to have solved the problem. And some serious cleaning.
