Wow - such great music!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ana_Alcaide “Alcaide taught herself how to play the #nyckelharpa on the streets of Toledo, Spain." 🤩 That's 16 strings to tune!
I wonder what flute like instrument is…
Sunday is for baking bread and testing / comparing microphones. Maybe at some point I can do a comparison video. Nerd alert!
The small inconspicuous microphone in the first photo is a Bartlett nyckelharpa mic I got second hand. Bartlet is an US based company.
Normally, I use a DPA 4099 mic for live playing and I'm quite happy with it. DPA is a Danish company. The DPA sounds very natural but also VERY bright which can get unpleasant with an instrument so rich in overtones. Otherwise it is pretty much plug and play. Nowadays it comes at a pretty high cost of around 600€ and it looks a bit fragile, but mine has been holding up great for many years now.
The DPA is a swan neck mic and comes with a velcro strap that you awkwardly wrap around the tailpiece. Positioning is difficult and it can get in the way sometimes if you want to use pizzicato. I have definitely bumped into it on accident in the past 🙈
The Bartlett also sounds very natural but much warmer out of the box, maybe even a bit muffled. But with the right positioning and a bit of EQing in the high end it could be a very nice alternative! I love that you can just wedge it under the stringholder with a piece of foam and it is almost invisible. It looks very sturdy and costs only around 200€ (keep in mind shipping costs and tariffs esp to Europe!).
In all other regards they are very much the same. Both are condesor mics, both need phantom power. Cheers!

Nyckelharpa
● Native American Drone Flute

（The bagpipe of the poor）。
Dvojanka
Dvoyanka
Cylja Dyjare

Back to everyday life (sigh) after a beautiful weekend surrounded by musicians at Nyckelharpawochenende Süd in Balingen! 💚
I enjoyed teaching my intermediate class so much and it's always such a pleasure to meet up with the nyckelharpa family from around the globe, to jam and chat and nerd out 💚
If you're looking for really cool, well-organised folkmusic workshop weekends, do check out https://www.nyckelharpawochenende.de - there are also beginner nyckelharpa workshops and an ensemble open to all instruments! This year's Northern Germany edition in May even has a hurdy gurdy class! 👀

Did another small studio recording for an educational production yesterday - I love doing this! 💚🌱 knowing my nyckelharpa will be listened to in soooo many schoolrooms makes me really happy. For a lot of students it will be the first time they hear one :)

For #Oxford locals: this Monday, 18 August, we'll be having our monthly #Scandi / #French #folksession at the Half Moon, St. Clement's St, Oxford, 8PM .Very cozy pub, and a great chance to hear some great music and see some odd instruments (#nyckelharpa, #hurdigurdy,...) plus old favourites. For new players, a tunebook with lots of our tunes can be found by following the session link at https://users.physics.ox.ac.uk/~pierrehumbert/nordic/nordic.html ... pinched from @climatebook.bsky.social and added hashtags
Not sure how, but after letting the #nyckelharpa build sit a few days I found most of the keys were moveable only by sledgehammer. I suspect I messed up putting in the felt in the key box and stickiness set in. So today I'm catching up on podcasts as I get in time honing my chisel and sand papering skills.
Could I just use a belt sander to bang thru it? If I was not doing this in a full 2 bedroom apt I might have gotten one today. Nope, hand crafted baby. We go to war with the army we have ..

European Music is rich and varied. Swedish folk music with some "modern" addition. #nyckelharpa The 12 string guitar is atypical for this kind of music. Väsen (these days a duo), are incredibly tight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gWLH7ZrMgw
Polska is a dance form. With associated tunes ofc.
Are you the key master? Finally getting to finishing the #nyckelharpa from #nerdygurdy.
Still working on phase 2 of the #CigarBoxGurdy and dreaming up a cigar box #theorbo
Srsly folks...theorbos, gurdys, and nyckleharpa are the power trio of the future...as Barreta said "you can take that to the bank!"
11) This is #SnarkyPuppy and #Väsen performing "Shapons Vindaloo." I find it amazing that even with that many musicians and rhythms that intricate, their playing is still so tight. It's in 23/16, but imo it doesn't sound at all forced or gimmicky—it just works. #ThreeMinuteThursday #3MT #Music #UnitedStates #Sweden #TimeSignature #Nyckelharpa https://youtu.be/GG34pxW_N4c?si=pzaLSORYlSCXu0O-
#nerdyharpa update. The bending of the soundboard was way outside my skill set. It soaked, I slowly cranked up the tension...it bent. A few days later I hung it to dry. End results..much like myself it is bent in ...curious ways. I worked out the last steps needed to put on the top soundboard ...and it beat on me like I owed it money. Even after filing down the tabs to match the bends it just would not stay put. Clamps were employed. There will be clean up needed. #nyckelharpa #nerdygurdy
