  1. Estate sale digital camera on the bench tonight. I picked it up for $1 because it “didn’t work”. Battery terminals were severely corroded and found one of the button extensions broken inside. After some cleanup and a piece of strategically placed 3D printer filament - it works! #electronicsrepair #camerarepair

  2. Something new on the bench - Raspberry Pi 400. This one had a broken micro SD card latch, so I had to replace the slot with a brand new one. Luckily I bought a few for a Jetson Nano back in a day and they are exactly the same ✅.

Then - as always - I ran a stress test and my god this thing has amazing cooling - that internal heatsink is the best mechanism I've ever seen on a Raspberry Pi - 40°C at max load. Wow 🤩.

  3. Restored a Russian VFD clock with a Soviet KR145IK1911 chip and IV-11/IV-15 tubes — replaced a static-damaged clock IC (tiny-windowed substitute) and brought the glow back to life! 5. Learning new stuff - programming ITE EC chip over the keyboard connector with #SVOD4 without needing to desolder the chip.

One thing I can tell you is you better use a microscope to make sure you’re picking the right ribbon cable and that you align it well while plugging.

Quite a fiddly thing to deal with but eventually I made it work.

  6. Hello Fediverse friends.

This one is a bit embarrassing for me but I post my mistales as well as my wins.

A viewer sent me a Sega Game Gear as a parts-only donor. It had already been recapped, but it still wouldn’t power on.

Part 1 is teardown + diagnosis. I clean up old electrolyte, inspect the previous work, and start tracking the real fault. No miracle fix yet, but we do find a solid lead for Part 2? Maybe?

Thanks to @iFixit who very kindly sent me some new tools for the cabin.

Retooting is always appreciated (but never expected) :)

  7. Looking for electronics repair of a Brother monochrome laser MFC printer in Perth, Western Australia.

    Hobbyist or professional.

    It won't switch on.

    MFC-L5755DW

DM me if they're your secret repairer.

Prefered locations: Near Kwinnana freeway, Nth Pth, Como, Freo, Cockburn areas. But Mitchell freeway, Bentley ... oh anywhere.

  8. Recently got me a XPrinter XP-58 receipt printer for 7$. It was sold as broken. Turns out it has an unsoldered - not even torn or broken USB port and misaligned ribbon cable (as seen in this photo).

Five minute fix - good as new ✅.

  9. Guys, has anyone opened Minisforum UM890 Pro? Or maybe you've seen a teardown by someone?

I'am wondering if it uses liquid metal or normal thermal paste?

Don't really want to mess with it much if it's liquid metal, but if not - it'd be a good moment to repaste it since I've bought and used it since October :)

  10. Some of my recent #RaspberryPi #electronicsrepair observations:

    1) more often than not BCM54213PEB1KMLG Ethernet controller turns out to be bad even if measurements on the surrounding caps seem fine

    2) same goes for the CPUs on Raspberry Pi 4 model B - impedance on the inductors around the PMIC may seem ok, but then CPU would simply either turn out to be brain dead, overheat, or, for example, USB ports won't work, though Pi would boot fine.
    And replacing VL805 won't help.

  11. Weird case today in my hobby of #RaspberryPi #electronicsrepair - a dead CPU, but all major ICs are fine: DA9090, VL805, FPF1320UCX...

And there's more: CPU was shorted on a 1V8 rail 🤔.

So a note to self on reballing and replacing similar ICs: use airflow around 40%, don't put a hot air nozzle on and don't underestimate hot air rotation while heating the stencil and the chip. You'll thank yourself later 😊.

  16. EDIT: Thanks everyone, Problem solved.

Any simple suggestions on replacing C1 in this circuit?

What value capacitor(?) it is? Or likely to be?

C1 selected as possible fault on basis of possible magic smoke residues.

Board is from an artificial Christmas tree with optic fibre tipps in the foliage.

The green LEDs will now only flash for <0.5 seconds very very infrequently.

I have a multimeter and a soldering iron.

    Suggestions for hashtags?
