  5. "Movie anti-star": an actor whose presence in a movie is, on its own, sufficient to cause you to avoid ever seeing it.

    Adam Sandler
    Rob Schneider
    Kevin James
About half of the Saturday Night Live cast that have ever done a feature film
    Pauly Shore
    Kevin Hart
    Macaulay Culkin

Who would you add to the list?

I note that my list above doesn't include any women (other than perhaps SNL alumni, but I can't think of a female from there that annoys me like the above). Are only men capable of being such annoying, simpering, mugging-for-the-camera wastes of screen time?

  6. Back to work after a week off. Time to dig out of the inbox, and catch up on everything I missed. Sometimes I think returning from PTO is the worst part. Not because I don't want to go to work (i really do enjoy what I do for a living) but because nothing actually stops while you're gone. Its probably worse for folks with more dependencies riding on them, but its still not great even at my level.

But first, my Macbook has to give me grief. I use a dock, to connect to two external displays, and the laptop itself sits with its lid closed. I had the audacity to shut it down when I logged off on Friday before my PTO. This morning, not only is there no way to turn the dang thing on without pulling it out of the little shelf its in, but... That dock it spends 95% of its life connected to? The one that gives it all of its input and output... Yea, I have to allow it to connect, which means holding the laptop on my palm while i turn it on, wait for it to completely boot, login, and then plug it into the dock and click.. Allow, before I can use my keyboard, mouse, and displays. Seriously. I get it, malicious devices are a thing. but the dock i use all the dang time?

    Sigh.

  7. #Firefox just keeps getting worse.

I don't know exactly which version this started with, but for the last few months Firefox has been a #CPU hog for me. Even when not interacting with any browser windows, the CPU usage of various processes - the main firefox #process, the content-sandboxing #processes, the WebExtension processes - will be taking significant CPU in bursts. There's frequently an Isolate... process using ~100%, and the main process will sit at 90% for a while before jumping to 160%.

It's significant enough that it makes actually using the #browser #annoying. Pauses for one or two seconds while typing or scrolling as it does ... whatever it's doing while chewing CPU, and these happen every few seconds. Like 3 or 4 times for each line I'm typing in this window right now.

There's nothing obvious to account for this workload. There are no videos playing, or animations, or sound. There are no continuously-updating pages or web apps running. I have uBlock Origin (adblocker) and Privacy Badger running, which significantly reduces the amount of work the browser does because there's no ad scripts to screw around in the background. The only thing I'm actively doing in Firefox at the moment is typing this toot. And yet still it pauses constantly.

  8. What are some annoyances or issues in video games that you're glad are gone?

For me, I'm glad that online passes were abandoned. An online pass was a code you'd get with a game that usually locked away multiplayer or sometimes items & missions untill you entered the code & downloaded the DLC. These codes were given to you when you got a game new, but if you got a game used & the code in the box was claimed, you'd have to pay $10 to unlock the same content.
