  1. One Nation, Coalition bank on cheap cigarettes being uncool
    By Clare Armstrong

The Coalition and One Nation will have to prove they believe a generation that has grown up thinking cigarettes are both uncool and expensive will continue to resist when the last of those barriers disappears.

  7. 🔥 Liberal MP Lori Idlout just landed on the ethics commissioner's naughty list. Latest Liberal to break federal ethics rules, now standing with a growing roster that mostly collected a stern look and a participation trophy. Little or no punishment. Again. 🙄

And the lemmings? Still lining up to defend the club. 🐑

One rule for them. Another for you. Accountability is not optional. ⚖️

  9. @ulveon So now that that is out of the way :blobcatgooglyheadache:

Welp... how do we define what is not about human rights then? It seems like genAI (and in particular, chatbots and other agentic AI) conflicts with our ability not to depend on them and their providers, might irreversibly hinder our cognitive capabilities almost immediately after first use, is a tool that overwhelmingly has more potential for job and value destruction than actual, sustainable construction, are produced and run with huge energy bills to the point that some people are already getting denied electricity at their homes, so on, so forth.

I guess the only reason why we should be debating it is because impact is unclear. But if you think that we already went past that threshold, it makes sense to classify it as "not up for debate".

And that's just one of the reasons why debate is so difficult. We do, in fact, have self-determination — fascists might not like it but then turn the other way around and insist on the concepts of "free will" and "freedom" because they know they want theirs to be the #objective #truth. Anyway. This means that each one is constantly, subjectively drawing their own lines. Why so? Because that self-determination, that inner will and interpretation of the world, is inherent to consciousness and self-preservation. We need to draw lines to understand and interact with the world, to feel safe and seek what we want and need. And that includes defining what we talk about and to which extent, and usually it's a huge mental toll for seemingly little to no benefit... I think you can agree about this one :baa:

    And yeah, many factors include:

    • Tying your identity to friends, ideals, ideologies, etc., which in turns means that conceding on a point is risking your very sense of self, questioning what you have done with your life, your social relationships, how you cared for your children, etc.
    • This is furthermore entrenched with trust in one's cognition and trust in the outside world. Think of terms like "common sense", "reality" being "obvious", etc. What that depicts is vulnerability, someone relying on superficiality and authority to build everything else upon. That gets ROUGH.
    • Being vulnerable to abuse, with trauma hindering your ability to neutrally analyze a situation. You see a pattern and immediately run away from it. One, of course, needs to learn to grow from PTSD and get better at it, but it's still a hard process to get there. And there's no real echo chambers, but there is mutual reinforcement, which if unchecked, is an easy way to detach from reality and end up with something resembling psychosis (oh hey where have I heard of that one)
    • Just being a shit person. Wanting to dunk on others, #rekting the #soyboy #snowflake #woke #liberals with #facts #and #logic, treating bullying as a moral crusade, etcetc. This is where "the cruelty is the point" comes from.
    • And finally: not really caring and just following the trend. So basically, some just follow wherever social norms around them go (usually handed over top-down from hard power) and can change in a blink of an eye.

Those are a lot of reasons, and most remarkably, they either involve the network effect, or extremely fundamental parts about people. It's understandable to want to give up. And in that regard, all I can say is that we're moving faster than ever, and while Planck's principle might be largely true, we're still seeing a huge generational uplift, with much more rational folks who have their empathy towards others and their priorities in life in a much better position.

So change is very much still feasible.

Just, more slowly than I wish it was.

  16. Growing up, I was always told to mock #socialism as a form of utopianism, as if that was a bad thing. #Utopianism was never a belief that something would happen, or that anything would be perfect. It was a thought experiment to consider what a perfect outcome would look like, so we could implement the ideas and get as close as possible. Meanwhile, #capitalism , #conservatism , #liberalism , and #libertarianism are just as #utopian in their dreams. Capitalism and libertarianism believe that if we JUST get government out of the way, we could have the #freemarkets work the way they are supposed to and lead to prosperity for all, never mind that corporations only exist because of #bankruptcy laws and standards created by Congress. Modern conservatism believes that if we just went back to a specific, unspecified time point when religion ruled, we would have prosperity again, never mind that America was never like that, even when we were at our most religious. #Liberals believe that if freedom, equality, and equity are guaranteed, but with a true free market that does require governments to regulate it, we would have true prosperity. The only difference is that #Marx , using arguments by #AdamSmith himself, poked holes in all of these ideas at their core. That the structure itself needed an overhaul of who holds power, or at least patched with a strong welfare state, and to work toward that utopian dream where the people held the power instead of the lords or #oligarchs and everyone was a lawmaker with direct democracy, there was a return of #thecommons that was just the norm for most of human history, and #personalproperty was something you physically used, erned and worked instead of from trading, hoarding and wasting while people starved aka #privateproperty . The day the lords stole the commons from the people was the day that socialism started to exist, with the Diggers and the Levelers attempting to take on the power of the lords and realizing they already ran their own villages, or communes and affairs in their areas, and the lords were just a middleman that contributed little to nothing. Hence the term #communism , which is a return to the natural commons people like #John Locke and #Voltaire and other #Enlightenment thinkers idealized, but capitalism has brainwashed people to ignore, forget, or never know in the first place they believed this while we were told to look up to them. Utopianism gives us the power to dream, to coalesce our ideas and our ideals. When we were told not to dream of our ideal world but were told to dream of their ideal, that's when the dream died and we just all became doomers.
  17. Given the choice, Centrists always side with fascists or the right. #LifeLesson You can't trust centrists. Example:
"the leader of the ailing Liberals, Simona Mohamsson, shocked her party last month by abruptly switching positions on SD, announcing that her party would accept being in government with a far-right force she had previously denounced as racist. She also held a press conference alongside Åkesson in which they hugged."

Just watch, if conservatives are ever in power this will be used to detect queers, brown kids asking historical questions and women looking for abortions.

He has been vindicated that something big and substantial is happening, and that we are now in a truly competitive election environment. In many ways, this week can and should be the week the debate about whether the #Liberals could win the 2025 election dies a final death.”

  29. Gallagher is right that the #APS is in need of massive reform and particularly depoliticisation. But it's disingenuous to lay the entire blame for how it is at the feet of the #Liberals. At least since the Keating Government, #Labour and Liberal both have been guilty of heavily #politicising public administration, particularly the APS and the relationship between Ministers, advisors, the MO, and the public service.
Any #reform needs to come from the top down. From Ministers changing the way they and their offices conduct themselves and their relationship with the #SES.
It also needs to come from the middle - the SES1 and EL levels - where a return to frank and fearless advice must occur. Additionally, these people need wholesale replacement in many cases; they've long worked in toxic relationships with their teams and management and cannot reform (and don't want to).
Do these things, and then, maybe, we'll have a strong APS able to give clear, policy-driven advice with far less politics and malicious culture involved.
