Run expensive tests where predictions are uncertain or consequential; estimate the rest: but validate calibration across new models and harnesses.

  8. Big Picture Science for Aug 24, 2026: Measure For Measure

    REPEAT
Whether in miles or pounds, meters or kilograms, we take daily measure out our lives. But how did these units ever come to be, and why do we want to change them? From light-years to leap seconds, we look at the history of efforts to quantify our lives and why there’s always room for greater precision. Plus, we debate the virtues of staying imperial measurements vs. going metric.

  10. New paper: "Valuation Without ℝ: A Category-Theoretic Foundation for Finite Measurement"

Can measurement be formalized independently of real numbers AND set theory?

We axiomatize "valuation" as a graded distinguishability map satisfying the ultrametric inequality. Dimension emerges as the growth exponent of the distinguishability graph.

  11. From Fragmentation To Integration - A Review Of Data–Model Integration In Land Subsidence Research
    --
    doi.org/10.1016/j.ancene.2026. <-- shared paper
    --
H/T @manonzero current drought conditions, increasing pressure on ecosystems, and ongoing climate adaptation challenges, land subsidence is receiving growing attention worldwide.
For anyone wanting to learn more about land subsidence, or get a refresher, [the authors] provide an overview of the processes involved, the ways it can be measured or estimated, the models used to simulate it, and how observations and models can be combined, [their] new [#openaccess] review paper [link above] may be of interest!
A central message of the paper is that understanding and managing land subsidence requires bringing these different sources of information together…”
    --
    “HIGHLIGHTS:
    • Presents a comprehensive synthesis that unifies all major elements of integral land-subsidence research.
    • Defines the methodological steps needed for full integration and positions them within the broader challenges posed by subsidence.
    • Brings together and distills the key components of data, modelling, and integration into a coherent framework.
ABSTRACT: Land subsidence, the sinking of the Earth’s surface, is a multi-faceted hazard driven by both natural and anthropogenic factors, and poses significant risk to environments, ecosystems, and society. Despite decades of growing research output, substantial gaps persist between investigations on the diversity of causes, reflected in data and model insufficiency. These gaps hinder the understanding of the issue and impede the effectiveness of mitigation measures. Many studies have urged to include all identified subsidence processes acting in a single area in an integral framework, for which a complex analysis has not systematically been outlined before. Therefore, [they] focus here on bridging the gaps between various technical research disciplines involved. [They] stress the urgency for an integral approach that combines observations with subsurface information of all known subsidence processes in an area, and [they] appeal for utilizing them in physics-guided data integrations. Only then can all subsidence drivers be understood, and effective mitigation measures designed. [They] outline the elements for an integral approach in categorical tables and schematized figures, and [they] discuss the main opportunities and challenges in a stepwise workflow. Leveraging these opportunities naturally leads to more robust, scalable, and policy-relevant solutions and fosters a more sustainable future…”

  14. The Clock and The Calendar Didn’t Have to Look Like This

Two of our basic time units are non-negotiable. A day is one rotation of the Earth. A year is one trip around the Sun. Nature hands us these whether we like it or not, no civilisation ever had to invent the day. Everything else - the week, the month, and even the hour, minute, and second - is a human invention layered on top. Nothing in physics requires 24 hours, 60 minutes, or a 7-day cycle. We made all of it up. And the fact that nearly every civilisation independently arrived at something […]

  20. NASA's Parker Solar Probe Flew In And Out Of The Solar Corona And Found A Source Of High-Energy Particles That No Existing Model Had Predicted
(When NASA's Parker Solar Probe passed through the solar corona during perihelion encounters at the heliospheric current sheet, its instruments recorded energetic protons at energies far above what existing models of particle acceleration at that location could account for.)

“… A team… at the Southwest Research Institute… and… the University of Maryland’s Institute for Research in Electronics and Applied Physics has published an analysis of those measurements [link above]…, identifying magnetic reconnection at the heliospheric current sheet as the mechanism responsible. The proton energies detected were, in the study’s framing, approximately a thousand times greater than the available magnetic energy per particle that models of this process had predicted.
The finding matters for two reasons: it identifies a source of energetic particles close to the Sun that was not anticipated, and it raises questions about how far the existing understanding of reconnection-driven particle acceleration extends…
The Parker measurements suggest that picture needs revision. The magnetic island merging mechanism [the authors] identif[ied] can evidently produce proton populations at energies that challenge the boundary between what reconnection does and what shock acceleration does. Whether this source can explain a significant fraction of observed near-Earth energetic particle events, or whether it contributes mainly at energies and scales that remain confined close to the Sun, is a question the paper does not yet resolve…
Solar Orbiter, the European Space Agency mission operating in coordination with Parker, offers complementary measurements at somewhat greater distances. Comparing what the two spacecraft measure of the same particle populations as they propagate outward from the Sun will help establish which features originate close to the source and which are modified by the intervening solar wind. The energetic particle observations that puzzled researchers in the pre-Parker era now have a candidate mechanism. Whether that mechanism accounts for a large or small fraction of what actually reaches Earth remains the open question…”

  21. Just back from measuring our latitude (which I do roughly four times a year) and, for the first time, our longitude.

Latitude was pretty good, got to within about 15 km.

Longitude less good. Got about 6.8 degrees, but the actual value is about 3 degrees.

Wondering what went wrong ... need to think about how to "fix" that.

  23. For all the "thought leadership" content created about trust and ongoing branding/marketing/PR investments intended to build it, it appears many organizations still don't know if they actually have it (Spoiler: they usually don't). #MeasurementFail

PwC recently assessed the role and importance of trust in business with a survey of 500 business executives, 2,508 consumers, and 2,012 employees conducted Feb.17-23, 2023.

    Key Findings:
    — 91% of business executives said their ability to build and maintain trust improves the bottom line.
    — 46% of employees whose company had a trust-damaging event in the last year said they expected the event.
    — 79% of consumers said protecting their data is very important to building trust.
    — 84% of business executives said they think that customers highly trusted the company, yet only 27% of customers said the same.
    — 79% of business executives said their employees trust the company, but only 65% of employees agreed.
