The so-called #audiophile community is famous for the amount of #woo that passes for knowledge or expertise.

When you look at the DIY audio community - building things up from #electronic components or modules - you add in the cargo-cult processes used by people with no basic electronics knowledge building these things, and the false-but-confident beliefs of those with some knowledge but more assurance of their own intelligence 🙄 - and you get some real doozies in discussion threads [1] on audio/electronics fora.

I just came across one that will stick with me:

A: I saw some people are doing <X> to increase the bass from this little amp. Should I do it?

B (actually knowledgeable): Depends on the design. If it's lacking <Y>, it can help the subjective bass response of the amp.

C (overly confident): BS! OBJECTIVELY (!) you get more and better boom.
Boom-boom, you know? Your guts will tell you the objective truth.

... that is LITERALLY the definition of "subjective". 🤣

Something I just figured out:

“We tested the system with 8 million concurrent listeners earlier today.”

Is testing just a few hours beforehand enough time to do anything to scale up, if they found the systems were insufficient? Can you locate, rent/buy, and setup enough additional virtual machines in only a few hours? Especially given that Elmo fired 90% of the original Twitter employees? Remember also Elmo became notorious for paying Twitter bills late.

A scientific study discovered the Dunning Kruger effect ist actually kind of nonsense in the form it is known by the general public. People like to think they are better than "the average" in general, no matter how good or bad they actually are.

@thomasoph Da hast du recht. Lebenserfahrung ist etwas Wichtiges. Allerdings haben nicht alle alten weisen Männer nützliche, den alten weißen Männern fehlt die Erfahrung und die Perspektive von Diskriminierten meist komplett. Das Schlimme daran ist, dass sie diese für wertlos halten und so noch nicht einmal diese Perspektive zum Ergänzen ihrer beschränkten Lebenserfahrung berücksichtigen. #dunningkrueger @tagesschau
