IMHO the BSD familie is not in the category dinosaur
The BSD boxes which I had installed at different clients have worked literally till they fell apart. All of them were running freeBSD
The human clients never knew how to even spell the operating system. I quietly replaced hard drives when they were broken and threw the systems away when the hardware was done the operating system was always good.
None of my BSD based boxes ever lost any data because I followed the rules which were in the man pages. Back then I came from a Linux World compiling kernels manually and all other GNU programs, no distribución then.
BSD FELT LIKE THE FOUNDATION OF WHERE LINUX SHOULD HAVE BEEN
My clients were running Mission critical operations and I couldn't trust them to Linux so I went to BSD I was never ever disappointed.
What drew me to BSD was the centralized system of everything together. Not just a fantastic kernel with the rest glued to it, glued with water based Glue

We'd like to think rights are inviolable, but they are fragile and borne of stability and surplus. When those are threatened, people get more casual with what they'll do for others.
Also, the very notion of annual meetings has an inappropriate stability baked in. Climate is accelerating, which means the pace of its wrath is not synchronized to budget cycles or the Earth's leisurely path around the sun.
At this point, the very notion of an annual meeting about climate is a statement of denial. It is essential to meet as often and for as long as is needed to get serious action. It may be uncomfortable for representatives to ask there host nation or company for resources or calendar time, itself the most precious resource, but if those entities are not up to feeling uncomfortable in service of something larger, then THAT is the key obstacle and the smoking gun of denialism.
Climate change should be making us uncomfortable. It promises much worse than that, and soon. Discomfort helps to set priorities properly. Smoothing over discomfort admits the acceptability of status quo priorities.
Ask for semi-annual meetings or the right to variable lengths of time to get real points across and obtain serious commitment.
Survival of the species is on the line, and too many places in the world are hierarchically arranged so that that will be managed by herd thinning in vain hope that's enough to let our most affluent survive at the expense of others. In other words, kindness and human rights will be the first casualties of a society structured to preserve its sociopathic leaders at all costs.
And, saddest of all, when the rest are gone, the sociopaths will realize they haven't the skill to do much of anything necessary even for survival, and then they will be gone, too. If I thought we were focused on preserving at least our kindest, or smartest, or hardest working people, I might have hope in this regard. But the ones with the bunkers are none of these things, nor will they be able to keep those bunkers in working order long enough for the planet to recover and humanity to thrive again.

But none of it would have been possible without my wife Christa. When I walked out of my job in 1990, we were in it together. I was tired of the corporate world and wanted to chase the future - she had a stable and lucrative executive position in a global multinational and could help to finance the risk. We decided - together - that I could take the plunge - into the world of technology consulting.
Then, as I pivoted to the Internet in '94 and then to the "Futurist" role in 2002, she wasn't just supporting the move. She was the rock of stability that allowed the move to happen, all while raising our two young children. But she wasn't just the mom - she was the master organizer of complicated logistics, contracting, and so much more. Oh, and at the same time, she was the rock-solid editor of the (soon to be) 44 books that I have written or co-written throughout my career.
I've written about her role before, and in one post, referred to her as the 'Fifth Beatle' - the George Martin of the operation, the Bernie Taupin partner, the one whose role is often unseen but absolutely critical to the overall success.

In the world of the Infinite Pivot, everyone talks about the effort involved in changing. They focus on the speed, the risk, and the vision of the person at the helm. The key person, so to speak.

Christa has been my business partner, my office manager, and my reality check for nearly four decades. In the last week or so, #Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella announced that they were going to pull back from doing new feature work for #Windows for a bit, and focus on bug fixes and other quality-of-life improvements for users and administrators. Windows' already shaky reputation has taken a beating over the last year as it seems that every monthly rollup #patch, and many out-of-band #patches, introduce new problems at the same rate as they fix previous ones.
Is this giving you deja vu? It should. Remember a couple or three years ago, when the same guy announced that Microsoft was going to focus on security? They were in the middle of a long spell of brutal security holes found in all their products. Remember how they told their #engineers "If you have to choose between doing a feature and doing security, choose security"?
Remember how you never heard about that initiative again?
It's the same thing here. #PR garbage in service of a narrative that no, Windows' horrible security, usability, and #stability aren't actually that bad, so that MS can focus on their core competencies of buzzword promotion, stock market analyst manipulation, and monopoly abuse.
Perhaps someone in Microsoft management actually believes these refocusing efforts are genuine - but if you don't change the incentives, they won't actually take hold.
