The presidency is the ultimate example: There are no consolation prizes for the loser.

No researcher argues that human nature is the sole, or even the primary, cause of today’s #polarization.

But savvy political operatives can exploit, leverage and encourage it.
And those operatives are learning from their triumphs in #divide-and-#conquer politics.

Here’s where psychology gives way to political science.

The American political system may cultivate “out-group” hatred, as academics put it.

🔹One of the scarce resources in this country is political #power at the highest levels of government. 🔹

The country has no parliamentary system in which multiple parties form governing #coalitions.

Add to this fact 🔹#redistricting that ensures there are fewer truly #competitive congressional races.🔹

The two parties have inexorably moved further apart ideologically, and leaders are more likely to be punished — “#primaried” — if they reach across the aisle.

And because many more districts are now 🔹deeply red or blue, 🔹rather than a mix of constituencies, House members have fewer reasons to adopt moderate positions.

Less than 72 hours before the next great #production #cutover.

We’ve done the #dryRun several times. We have documents, #playbooks (#Ansible and otherwise), and #pullrequests. On every season of #Survivor, on one or more occasions, one of the contestants finds themselves on the wrong side of a vote. They succeed in staying in the game, by using what has become central GOP strategy:

How is it that humans have been living in civilization for more than 10,000 years and this #divide and #conquer shit still works?

We've got several situations that fall into this category going on right now. But there's one in particular that needs to be called out:

In #Texas, long years of #privatization and neglect of the power #grid have once again resulted in winter power failures and senseless suffering. Yet Governor #Abbott (who inexplicably just got reelected) instead of fixing the problem is bussing helpless refugees across the country in freezing temperatures to try to embarrass vice president #Kamala Harris, while at the same time his attorney general #Paxton is trying to scapegoat and harass #trans people.

When do the people of Texas quit playing "shitty Survivor" and hold these bastards accountable for actually governing their state?
