Charlie and I just wrapped up our Friday morning walk — a little over four miles. Twice along the way, two big dogs from down the street crossed into our space and tried to jump Charlie. We ran them off both times. It’s crazy: out of all the homes in the neighborhood, those neighbors seem completely unable to control their dogs. They just run amok.
And yes — fitting for the season. Amok, amok, amok. If that didn’t hit you immediately, that’s a line from Hocus Pocus, where the three witches run wild through town.
Anyway, everyone around here has dogs, and every single neighbor except those folks manages to keep them under control. They used to have a fence that could contain their dogs, but the dogs kept breaking out. My opinion? They’d toss the dogs in the backyard and mostly forget about them. And honestly — what’s the point of having a pet if you’re not going to spend time with it?
Another issue is they leave their dogs outside all the time. Naturally, if no one’s paying attention, the dogs are going to roam. You’d think that would be a clue, right?
I think they treat the situation like they live on a farm miles away from anyone. Granted, our area feels semi‑rural, but it’s still a subdivision — just one with two‑acre lots. It could be worse, I guess. At least they don’t chain the dogs up 24/7 like some people do. And the dogs are fed and look reasonably healthy.
But on the flip side, those neighbors have had several dogs shot, poisoned, and run over by cars.
It’s almost as if they don’t see dogs as living beings with lives worth valuing. Don’t you think.
