THE FIRST LIE WAS:
IT MUST BE ME? 💎I realised something this morning that has been sitting quietly underneath a great deal of my life. Kids feel guilty about things they are not responsible for and don't understand.
Dad is angry.
The marriage is unhappy.
Mum withdraws love.
The house becomes frightening.
The adults behave badly.And somehow, as children, we concluded:
IT MUST BE ME.
That is an extraordinary burden to place inside a small human being. The child does not have enough information to say, “These adults are frightened, damaged, confused, overwhelmed, or simply behaving badly.” The child only knows that something has gone dreadfully wrong.
SO GUILT ARRIVES.
And because children are brilliant at adapting, they may spend the next fifty or sixty years trying to correct an error that was never theirs in the first place.
Trying to be good enough. Useful enough. Quiet enough. Successful enough. Lovable enough. Trying, without ever quite knowing it, to repair the house they grew up in.
BUT THERE MAY HAVE BEEN NOTHING TO REPAIR IN YOU.
That is the part I find so liberating. I am not interested in blaming anybody. Blame is just guilt travelling in the opposite direction. I am interested in seeing the original error.
As a child, I assumed responsibility for something beyond my understanding and control. Then adulthood grew around that assumption. Seeing the error clearly does not require years of punishment, explanation or excavation. Sometimes the correction is astonishingly simple.
THAT WAS NOT MINE.
And perhaps it never was.

I used to live in a house filled to the brim with books. My ex worked in academia, so there were tons of essays on various topics, ranging from literature to sociology to history. I found some of them interesting but they were not the kind of thing I wanted to read before bed. SHAME IS LEARNED
Shame is body-identification with a whip in its hand.
The body eats, shits, sweats, smells, wants, ages, leaks, trembles, hungers, and dies.
None of this is guilt.
It is just mammal life.
But the mind learns to look at the body through other people’s fear.
A look.
A tone.
A punishment.
A withdrawal of love.Then the body becomes evidence.
“Something is wrong with me.”
That is the error.
Guilt may say, “I did something wrong.”
Shame says, “I am wrong.”
Mind training begins here:
Do not attack the body for being a body.
Do not worship it either.
Just stop accusing it.
The body is innocent.
It is an instrument.
It needs breath, warmth, food, washing, rest, and kindness.
Shame says, “Hide this.”
Kindness says, “Meet this.”
That is the whole turn.

Yes it's hot in Europe, unusually hot. But unexpectedly hot? That's a no. I studied environmental science back in the 1990s and scientists then were predicting that Europe would regularly have heatwaves in the 35-40C range by the 2020s.
We didn't stop driving petrol cars, install aircon in public buildings or stop flying away for glamorous holidays - myself included. And yet we complain. Now I help to build windfarms, built of steel and plastics that all use fossil fuels, to harness something free and turn it into electricity. It feels like baby steps whilst the house burns around me :elmo_fire:
I'm flying to Madrid on Monday, then Mallorca, then back to Glasgow via Heathrow, all powered by kerosine. At least I'm taking a bus to the airport :earth_americas:

I really don't see a lot of value in guilt. Supposedly it's supposed to drive people to try to make amends for bad things they've done, but from what I've seen, it's either people feeling bad about things that aren't actually wrong or harmful or people just wallowing in feeling bad about doing bad things but instead of trying to fix any of that, they make a big production out of it and make it other people's problem, especially the people they've harmed by their actions.
Just seems the opposite of useful to me. -

A Dutch newspaper (AD) recently published an explanation of why many people find vegetarians and vegans annoying. In short, it boils down to the fact that vegans are right and serve as a living mirror for people who actually feel guilty about their animal-unfriendly consumption.
Maybe I am being annoyingly logical, but then just stop eating meat. Bye bye cognitive dissonance.
