  2. GOWER: Former teacher jailed after sustained campaign of coercive control against wife

Christopher Haynes, 58, of Whitestone Avenue, Bishopston, Gower, was sentenced at Swansea Crown Court after pleading guilty to engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour. He entered his plea on what was due to be the first day of his trial.

The court heard how Haynes gradually tightened his grip over his wife’s life during their marriage, dictating who she was permitted to see, who could visit their home, and even what music was played in the house. He dismissed her work colleagues as “below him” and tried to pressure her into giving up her job entirely.

Prosecutor Craig Jones said Haynes viewed himself as “intellectually superior” to those around him and did not want his wife spending time with others or doing anything outside the home without him. Alongside the control, he would accuse her of being lazy around the house while simultaneously spending money the family did not have on expensive holidays and showering her with gifts.

Haynes repeatedly told his wife he had powerful connections within the Freemasons and warned her it would only take “one call, one bullet” to have her killed through his contacts in the organisation. The court heard he also engaged in frequent bouts of heavy drinking, with his wife later describing home life as like “walking on eggshells every day”.

When arrested, Haynes denied making any threats and claimed he was “besotted” with his wife and would do anything for her.

The complainant read a statement to the court in which she described how Haynes had “love bombed” her when they first met, making her feel as though they were soul mates – something she now recognises as part of the manipulation.

She told the court she had been an “independent and adventurous woman” but that Haynes had isolated her and shattered her confidence and safety with his jealous, abusive, coercive, degrading, and controlling behaviour and repeated threats.

She described the family home as a “prison” and said she was “a shell of the woman I once was” who now exists only for her children.

Caitlin Brazel, representing Haynes, said the lateness of his guilty plea stemmed from his reluctance to admit he was an alcoholic and his “deep-seated shame and embarrassment” at what he had done.

She told the court that after being forced to leave the teaching career he loved at the age of 50 due to deteriorating health, Haynes had turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism. The court heard that following his divorce from the complainant, Haynes had remarried around three years ago.

Judge Geraint Walters told Haynes he had “ruthlessly controlled and manipulated” his former wife and “effectively stole her identity”.

The judge noted that in his pre-sentence report, Haynes had sought to blame his ex-partner and justify his behaviour, and said it appeared the defendant was incapable of fully accepting his wrongdoing.

Haynes received a 10 per cent discount for his guilty plea and was sentenced to 21 months in prison. He will serve up to half the sentence in custody before being released on licence to serve the remainder in the community. He was also made subject to a lifelong restraining order prohibiting any contact with his former wife. Haynes has no previous convictions.

  9. Welsh weather presenter Ruth Dodsworth backs new domestic abuse booklets — “I wish they had existed when I was being abused”

Welsh weather presenter and domestic abuse survivor Ruth Dodsworth has thrown her support behind a new South Wales resource designed to help women experiencing domestic violence understand their options and find a way out — saying she wishes it had existed when she was going through her own ordeal.

Dodsworth, whose ex-husband was jailed after a near decade-long campaign of harassment and controlling behaviour, spoke at the launch of “From Fear to Freedom” — a bilingual resource produced in both Welsh and English by Soroptimist International Wales South to help women navigate the justice system, access support and take steps towards safety.

“The booklets are wonderful,” she said. “I wish they had been available when I was experiencing domestic abuse. I know these will help so many women, many of whom contact me every day. Breaking the silence is often the hardest step, but it’s the one that leads towards a future defined by your own choice.”

The resource was born directly out of research conducted across courts in South Wales, which found that women leaving court following domestic abuse cases had no idea where to turn next. That research was cited in Parliament by MP Jess Phillips during the launch of the Government’s Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy, and directly led to Independent Domestic Violence Advisors being placed in every court in the region.

But the gap between leaving court and knowing what comes next remained. The “From Fear to Freedom” booklets — two complementary volumes covering support options, safety steps and how to navigate the system — were developed in direct response to that need, drawing on input from survivors, domestic abuse services, Citizens Advice, NHS safeguarding leads, Crown Prosecution Service representatives, Police and Crime Commissioner advisors from both Dyfed-Powys and South Wales Police, and the Women’s Institute.

The initiative has been praised at the very highest levels. Queen Camilla, who has a longstanding commitment to raising awareness of domestic abuse, praised the work of Soroptimist International Wales South, saying she was deeply impressed by the club’s efforts to support survivors.

A former barrister who reviewed the booklets before publication said they were “wonderful — so much useful, helpful and supportive information, presented in such a simple and user-friendly format. These booklets have the power to be lifesavers.”

Helen Scourfield, President of Soroptimist International Wales South, said the research that led to the booklets had made clear how many women were being left without basic information at their most vulnerable moments. “We identified a clear gap — many women did not know what support was available or what processes they might face,” she said. “We developed the content in collaboration with local groups and ensured survivor insight informed the development throughout, to make sure the booklets are accessible and fit for purpose.”

To date, 1,500 booklets have been distributed across South Wales communities, funded by a £3,000 grant from the SIGBI UK Programme Action Committee alongside donations from members, clubs and three local women’s choirs, with a further £1,800 raised at the launch event itself. Further orders are anticipated from domestic abuse services across the region, and the booklets are also available digitally through Welsh Women’s Aid.

The work builds on a wider picture of improving support for domestic abuse victims across South Wales, with Dyfed-Powys and South Wales Police among forces that have bucked national trends on coercive control prosecutions in recent years.

Soroptimist International Great Britain and Ireland, founded in 1934, holds consultancy status at the United Nations and operates 248 clubs across the UK, Ireland, Malta, Asia and the Caribbean. Gillie O’Rourke, the organisation’s president, said the South Wales initiative was “typical of the excellent and innovative work Soroptimists undertake in support of women everywhere.”

Women experiencing domestic abuse can access the “From Fear to Freedom” booklets through Welsh Women’s Aid at welshwomensaid.org.uk. Anyone in immediate danger should call 999. The Live Fear Free helpline for Wales is available 24 hours a day on 0808 80 10 800.

  22. Mount Pleasant man jailed for 11 years after rape conviction

Yogesh Parmar pleaded not guilty to both charges but was convicted following a trial on 26 January. He was sentenced on Monday by Judge Catherine Richards, who also imposed a 20-year restraining order.

The court heard harrowing details of the victim’s ordeal through an impact statement read by prosecutor Ian Wright. The victim described being “repeatedly pinned down and not allowed to leave” during the attack, saying she had “no control over my own body or what he was doing to me.”

In her statement, she revealed the ongoing psychological impact of Parmar’s crimes, explaining that the incident had stopped her living a normal life and caused her to suffer panic attacks.

“I’m still affected to this day and it’s something I feel I will never recover from,” she said. “I have a constant heavy feeling in me from what he did and it comes back to me in waves.”

The victim added that she would “never forget his soulless eyes.”

The court also heard that the trial process forced the victim to relive the traumatic incident in order to have the truth recognised.

Detective Constable Lauren Williams from South Wales Police praised the victim’s bravery in coming forward and reporting the crimes.

“Yogesh Parmar raped his victim and also made her fear that he would be violent towards her on multiple occasions,” DC Williams said. “He physically assaulted her, prevented her from leaving his home and also threatened to destroy her property.

“This was a harrowing ordeal for the victim, who we commend for her bravery in coming forward and reporting Yogesh Parmar’s crimes.

“We hope that with this verdict and sentencing, the victim can now finally come to terms with what Yogesh Parmar did to her, and move on with her life, free from fear of what he would do next.”

South Wales Police emphasised that victims of sexual abuse will be “listened to, treated with dignity and respect, and will be supported throughout the judicial process.”

The force encouraged anyone who has been sexually abused to seek support, even if they are not yet ready to report to police. Information about support services is available through South Wales Police’s website.

The case was heard at Swansea Crown Court, which regularly handles serious criminal cases across the Swansea area.

Parmar, from Mount Pleasant, will serve 11 years in prison for his crimes.

  28. Rapist already serving 14‑year sentence gets another decade behind bars for attacking second woman

South Wales Police said 40‑year‑old Simon Morgan, of Groves Road, Neath, was found guilty of raping a woman in 2015 — an offence that happened years before he was jailed in 2025 for a separate campaign of violence, coercive control and rape against another victim.

The force said Morgan’s latest conviction means he will now spend almost a quarter of a century in prison, after a judge ruled he poses a “significant risk” of causing serious harm to the public.

Police said the 2015 rape was not reported at the time. According to evidence heard in court, Morgan pushed the woman to the floor, strangled and kicked her, took her phone and then raped her. The victim told the court she had tried to block out what happened as a “coping mechanism” and said she continues to suffer nightmares.

South Wales Police said Morgan’s offending shows a pattern of “sexual and violent” behaviour.

Rape Investigation Team officer Emma Robbins said:

“Simon Morgan’s sexual and violent offending is disgusting and is not limited to just one victim. He is a permanent threat to women’s safety and there is no doubt that had his brave victims not come forward, he would be committing these same offences to someone else today.”

She added that the victims had shown “immense bravery” in speaking out and said it was “pleasing to see such a violent and dangerous man… consigned to such a large prison sentence.”

At Swansea Crown Court, Judge Huw Rees said both rapes had been accompanied by violence and that Morgan’s history — which includes 10 previous convictions for 16 offences — demonstrated the danger he poses. His record includes assaults, ABH, GBH with intent and rape.

The court heard Morgan was already serving a 14‑year sentence imposed in April 2025 for raping a woman in 2021, an attack in which he dragged her to the floor, assaulted her and made threats to kill her while holding a bottle of rum. He was also sentenced at the time for a separate violent assault on a man in Neath that required reconstructive surgery, and for two assaults on a woman — one of which happened on a Gower beach in front of families.

Morgan’s barrister, Nick Gedge, told the court his client maintains his innocence over the 2015 rape. He said Morgan had experienced “childhood trauma”, had been engaging with education in prison, and had “found the Buddhist faith”.

Judge Rees imposed a 10‑year extended sentence, made up of six years in custody and four years on licence. The sentence will run consecutively to the 14 years Morgan is already serving. He must serve two‑thirds of the custodial term before he can apply for release, and the Parole Board will decide if he is safe to be freed.

South Wales Police said they have not released Morgan’s custody image at the request of a victim.

The force urged anyone affected by sexual abuse to seek support, saying survivors will be “listened to, treated with dignity and respect, and supported throughout the judicial process”.
