@jik I declined to join the UK #Biobank project, which I'd otherwise have been keen to do, because at the time the UK government was having a round of UNCONDITIONALLY GIVE US ALL YOUR DATA MWHAHAHAHA authoritarian wobbles. I wonder if anyone bothers to think about the long-lasting (medical, social, economic) losses from silent pushback from such antics - dear me of course not...

Another light pollution/health study using the massive UK #BioBank dataset. “Our findings provide evidence that a higher #ALAN exposure is associated with an increased risk of incident [ulcerative colitis], with a significant dose-response relationship, but not with [Crohn’s disease]. Further studies are needed to elucidate the impact of outdoor ALAN on disease pathogenesis and outcomes.”

Professor Chris Ponting on “Replicated Blood-Based Biomarkers” for ME in Big Data Pre-Print Study

Along with several colleagues, Professor Chris Ponting, a geneticist at the University of Edinburgh and a leading ME/CFS researcher, recently posted a pre-print called “Replicated blood-based biomarkers for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis not explicable by inactivity.” (A pre-print is a paper that has not yet been formally peer-reviewed.) For this analysis, the investigators examined data for more than 3,000 molecular and cellular traits in samples from the UK Biobank, including from 1,455 ME cases and 131,303 controls. They found 116 traits that were significant among both female and male ME patients.
Earlier today, I spoke about the study with Professor Ponting, who is also the lead investigator for DecodeME, a major genome-wide association study of ME/CFS.
