July 11, 2025"A human has died of pneumonic plague in northern Arizona, Coconino County health officials confirmed July 11.
"The case is not connected to a recent die-off of prairie dogs in the area, officials said.
"The death of the Coconino County resident marks the first recorded pneumonic plague death in the county since 2007, officials with Coconino County Health and Human Services said in a statement.
"The county's confirmation of the death came after Northern Arizona Healthcare issued a statement that one of its patients had a presumptive positive diagnosis of Yersinia pestis, which is the bacterium that causes plague.
"The person recently died in the Flagstaff Medical Center emergency department on the day the person sought treatment, the statement said.
"The Northern Arizona Healthcare statement says that 'despite appropriate initial management and attempts to provide life-saving resuscitation, the patient did not recover' and says that Northern Arizona Healthcare team is 'saddened by this loss of a community member.'
"Citing patient privacy, officials with Northern Arizona Healthcare and Coconino County said they would not be releasing additional information about the patient who died.
"The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says plague in humans is relatively rare, with about seven human cases reported annually across the country.
"Pneumonic plague is a severe lung infection, according to Coconino County health officials. A 2015 CDC report characterized it as the least common of the three main forms of plague. The other two main forms are bubonic and septicemic.
"The CDC says Yersinia pestis is transmitted by fleas, cycles naturally among wild rodents and that humans usually get the plague after being bitten by an infected rodent flea or by handling an infected animal. People may also become infected through exposure to sick pets, especially cats, the CDC says.
"County officials are investigating a recent sudden die-off of prairie dogs in the Townsend Winona area northeast of #Flagstaff that may be caused by plague, but county officials on July 11 said in their statement that the prairie dog case and the human plague death are 'not related.' "

- Avoid fleas and use veterinarian-approved flea treatments on pets.
- Keep them on a leash and out of areas known to be inhabited by wild rodents.
- Report prairie dog, rodent and rabbit die-offs to Coconino County at 928-679-8756 or 928-679-8760.
- Prevent rodent infestations by removing brush, rock piles, trash and lumber from around homes and outbuildings.
- Avoid contact with wild animals.
- Use an insect repellent and tuck pant cuffs into your socks to help prevent flea bites.
- Do not camp next to rodent holes and avoid sleeping directly on the ground.
- Be aware that cats are highly susceptible to plague.

Palm Oil Workers Face Hazardous Pesticide Exposure, New Report Reveals
A comprehensive study conducted by research agency Profundo, commissioned by the International Palm Oil Workers United (IPOWU) and funded by Mondiaal FNV, has uncovered alarming health risks faced by palm oil plantation workers in Colombia, Ghana, and Indonesia due to exposure to hazardous agrochemicals.
The investigation, involving 1,436 workers, identified the use of at least 56 different agricultural chemicals on plantations, including substances classified as “highly hazardous” by the World Health Organization. Notably, paraquat—a pesticide banned in the European Union since 2007—is still being exported from the EU to Indonesia, highlighting a concerning double standard in global chemical safety practices.
Key findings from the report include:
- Absence of comprehensive chemical safety policies, leading to inadequate health monitoring, safety training, and protective clothing for workers.
- None of the three countries studied have ratified key International Labour Organization conventions related to occupational health and safety.
- International palm oil buyers do not mandate specific occupational health and safety policies from their suppliers.
- Many workers are unaware of the dangers associated with pesticide exposure.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) is often not replaced when damaged, and access to facilities for washing PPE is limited, increasing the risk of contamination.
- Workers with longer tenures reported more health issues, such as skin rashes, dizziness, and vomiting, indicating cumulative exposure effects.
The report underscores the urgent need for stronger enforcement of safety regulations, better training and equipment for workers, and greater accountability from international buyers to ensure the health and safety of those at the forefront of palm oil production.
The EU’s double standards by banning paraquat while exporting it to Indonesia
Quiroz is upset about the EU’s double standards: banning paraquat but still producing and exporting it to Indonesia. “That is unacceptable! That the EU protects its own citizens but not the rest of the world. The EU does not show much compassion for people in the supply chain. At the same time, we see that Colombia allows certain chemicals under specific and controlled conditions on palm oil and other commercial plantations, which eventually end up in the palm oil that we import. So that protection is not watertight at all.”
Risks of pesticide contamination are high for families and communities
“I did not expect that not all plantations have washing facilities for the workers’ protective clothing. So, they can’t wash their gear on-site, and they bring it home, exposing their families. There are even reports of people washing their protective clothing in nearby, flowing rivers, potentially contaminating the whole area. This happens on a small scale in Colombia and on a larger scale in Indonesia.” – lead researcher Diana Quiroz.

Conclusions:
"This study demonstrates that LPS contamination in ASD aggravates allergic lung inflammation in the presence of OVA and H-ASD. The aggravation of the allergic lung inflammation by LPS may be caused through the TLR4-dependent signaling pathway. The results of the current study indicate that the exposure to ASD with LPS may be a significant risk factor for adult and child #asthma. The hazardous effects of #MineralDust and #biogenic agents on human respiratory disease are an increasing public concern. Atmospheric exposure to #bacteria, fungi and virus, and silica-carrying particulate matters may influence human respiratory health on a world-wide scale."
