A Tale of Two Criminals – Cornell Journal of Law and Public Policy

> If you’ve poked around the internet the past month, you might have come across the image below. The meme juxtaposes two news articles to highlight the questionable retributive values behind American criminal law. But some people are crying hoax about this viral phenomenon—are they correct?

🚷 Passport #Inequality Is Social Injustice

"Passports from some places allow their holders to travel abroad simply by booking a flight and packing a bag. Others, however, entail booking an appointment at the nearest consulate, presenting documents to prove identity and financial means, then waiting weeks for a decision."

"#Poverty in our wealthy society should not only be regarded as a monstrous #socialinjustice. It also poses a threat to all workers and should be challenged by the entire #labour movement. As #publicservices and the workers who deliver them come under attack and as employers look to impose the burden of the present trade crisis on workers and communities, we must understand poverty and #homelessness in this context." https://canadiandimension.com/articles/view/the-war-on-the-poor-is-escalating

A quotation from Victor Hugo

You are right, sir, when you tell me that Les Misérables is written for all nations. I do not know whether it will be read by all, but I wrote it for all. It is addressed to England as well as to Spain, to Italy as well as to France, to Germany as well as to Ireland, to Republics which have slaves as well as to Empires which have serfs. Social problems overstep frontiers. The sores of the human race, those great sores which cover the globe, do not halt at the red or blue lines traced upon the map.
In every place where man is ignorant and despairing, in every place where woman is sold for bread, wherever the child suffers for lack of the book which should instruct him and of the hearth which should warm him, the book of Les Misérables knocks at the door and says: “Open to me, I come for you.”

A quotation from Frederick Douglass

The American people have this lesson to learn: That where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob, and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe.

Frederick Douglass (1817-1895) American abolitionist, orator, writer

Climate change is hitting women the hardest

https://ethicalrevolution.co.uk/climate-change-is-hitting-women-the-hardest/

The current capitalist system has created two related crises: ecological decline and social injustice. It has led to environmental damage like climate change, which affects some people more than others.

The two crises mutually reinforce the consequences of the same flawed systems of oppression and power. Climate change exacerbates global inequalities. This is because they disproportionately affect poorer countries and the most vulnerable humans due to factors such as geography, socioeconomic status, and limited access to rights and justice.

In particular, the relationship between climate change and gender inequality has often been underestimated. Especially in low- and middle-income countries, climate change has different effects on women and men. It affects women’s health, livelihoods and security disproportionately because of gender inequality and patriarchal structures.

Thomas Manton, English Puritan, considers oppression of laborers, a topic in James chapter 5. To delay a payment of a worker is to pay less, and prohibited in many places in scripture. It’s sin. This is item number five in Manton’s list of common ways to oppress a poor laborer.

Is this list commonly shown in all of the Puritan content being generated today?

How can you carefully consider your relationship with poor laborers?

Despite #BCNDP saying they’ve stopped #renovictions in #BritishColumbia they’re still very much happening. After a ruling from the Residential Tenancy Branch #RTB dozens of #Esquimalt #seniors are being kicked out in four months for the new owners to do renovations.

Many of the #renters being displaced are #LowIncome, either on #disability or a #FixedPension. As a result, most of them can’t afford market rent, and fear they could be homeless.

Because the new owner is doing renovations, not a total demolition, Esquimalt’s #Tenant Assistance Policy isn’t triggered. Any stronger policy is the #BCgovernment jurisdiction.

“It’s time for the provincial government to actually stop this from happening. If they really want to stop renovictions, then they need to change the laws,” said Douglas King, executive director of #TogetherAgainstPovertySociety.

King says what’s needed is a BC-wide #TenantAssistance #policy to better #ProtectTenants facing #displacement, but also to prevent #taxpayers from paying for the consequences down the line.

#socialinjustice metaphor:

A property has two sides, which are separated by a thick, armoured wall. On one side lives a very rich millionaire with armoured clothes, an armoured house and a car. Everything is protected against explosions, shrapnel and firearms.

On the other side, a great many poor people, at least 100 thousand, live in a very small space. Children, babies, pensioners and the like. Without any protection, of course.

Now a small bomb is threatening to explode, another millionaire has to decide on which side of the wall the bomb will explode. Unfortunately, we live in a world in which the poorer side is always chosen, even though the millionaire on the other side wouldn't even get a scratch.

This is the metaphor about the financial injustices in this world.

Succinct and spot-on: "It wasn't so long ago that "#woke" was a slang term from Black America, and it meant something substantive and easy to define. To be "woke" was to refuse to be complacent about #SocialInjustice. This definition offended Republicans, whose very existence depends on complacency in the face of social injustice. So as an act of very racist revenge, they appropriated the term "woke," turning it into a catch-all insult for anything that annoys them."
