I wrote a poem again.
And, well… this one crawled out of a considerably darker corner of the basement.
It deals with fascism, genocide, dehumanisation, violence, death, and some other subjects that really ought to come with a warning label and a small cup of tea. Hence the CW for this post...
I do like that poem. Quite a lot, actually.
Writing it was cathartic. Sometimes the things that fester in your head need to be dragged into the light, given a name, and made to sit quietly on the page instead.
Whether I publish it is another question.
I’m still deciding whether this particular little monster belongs in public, or whether it should remain locked in the cupboard where I keep the other things I write when the world gets particularly unbearable.
I'll give you one small look:
We are not your citizens.
We are not your subjects.
We are what you get
when the hunted grow teeth.

Fearing Figments
everything is so soft
it seems as if you are floating
like a feather
lying on the air
the darkness rises slowly
you see a room before you
thinly lit with moonlight
a form materializes
out of the darkness
it is pale
pale as a ghost
a ghost!
you freeze
sweat dripping
down your face

something soft touches your shoulder

my soul is a glimpse
a shrapnel of words
until the day my
mind is shattering
my red rimmed eyes are
seeding the secret soil
into solid earth
spider walking air
paper laced into my hair

The sceptre is cast to the shivering sea
with divine ordinance, codes of chivalry.
A blinding vision of the fallen from on high,
New roving dregs with a scavenger’s eye.
Yield up the light, coax out the dying flame,
Punishment for crimes revokes your name.
Was freedom built on ancient delusion?
It persists as the architect’s cold conclusion.
The most degrading and painful descent
is the one to the lower “kingdom” crescent,
Shadow throne invoked by seditious implication.
Collusion not coercion, mummified by mediation.
Trust not the expedient offer, the beatific start —
They can only embalm the chasms of the heart.

Black and Blue Ribbons
Cupid’s dart through the heart,
by a sentence stealer who wrote
poetry with bruise hued ribbons,
shining signs and a lifetime supply
of bowties and harpsichord drums.
Weightless work in the sea, a
fighter and fisher, a hunter of
human flowers, focused on the sole
surprised survivors of daylight,
papered over with sharp delights
and black and blue ribbon rites.
Bright Darkness
A bright darkness you see
freezing all hues said she
from a mouth you can’t
have thoroughly conceived.
Put me down as I’m no
longer made of bone and
bricks, just wood carved of
the rightful seed I’ve sown.
A kiss for me, to know every
mystery you imagined the
world contained, no longer
bright with stars that shine.
