  1. Working on writing yet another few angry letters to government sellout assholes. I don't even know why we have any governments anymore when politicians feel free to break laws whenever they want without any real living consequences.

  2. I don't think it's unreasonable to ask our mayors & city/municipal councils to cease giving more annual increases to police budgets without making body cams absolutely mandatory, with independent oversight. A bare minimum for public accountability & public transparency purposes.
I know that police won't be abolished in my lifetime. It would be helpful if local government stopped giving cops more taxpayers' monies, without forcing police departments to do bare minimum with wearing bodycams & not be able to personally choose when they're turned on/off - they need to be on while they're on shift.

  3. Today, I am fucking pissed off that #CRD approved borrowing $103 million to build a bigger RCMP building in the Westshore. Fuck that shit. People are struggling to pay rent, buy food/medications/living essentials & our local CRD board gets a loan to help criminal cops/RCMP. FYI - For non-locals -> many RCMP CIRG are from Nanaimo, Langford/Colwood, North Island, Northern BC, Winnipeg, rural Alberta areas. These places have higher amount of Conservative racist voters too - it's no coincidence.

RCMP CIRG is a voluntary corporate mercenaries unit & they're paid more than regular RCMP officers. Their main job is to protect ecocidal corporate interests, not public interests. That's why I call them corporate mercenaries. They're a heavily militarized unit & many COs are openly racist too. I have dealt with CIRG face to face multiple times, in multiple areas of BC. They're violent armed domestic terrorists who break multiple laws with impunity. They were created by BC government in 2017, under colonial crime boss, John Horgan. I hate that man, even post-death.

  4. I've found some bedtime movies to watch. Going to watch til I crash out.

Remember - it's your citizens' duty to question & push for actual answers from your elected officials. Remind those privileged fuckers that they were elected to be -> #PublicServants.
None of them were elected to put #CorporateGreed interests over #PublicInterests.
It seems, far too many elected officials forget their main job & 1st priority is to #ServeThePeople. Instead - they're screwing over all of us to pander to #CorporateGreed & not brave enough to stand up to their own inner caucus #corruption. They feed from same corrupted lobbyists' money troughs. Filthy capitalist pigs, getting fat while the rest of us are starving.

    FUCKING HELL - FIGHT BACK!

  5. Please don't call the cops on homeless folks, who you may see/run into at some parks, if they're not bothering anyone at all & are trying to keep to themselves. I've met several different homeless folks all around this large urban park & never felt scared around them. I sometimes bring them free foods & first aid supplies.

We desperately need more social & transitional supportive housing in #VictoriaBC. All municipalities should be working on this - together. This is a shared social responsibility & it crosses every municipal border. Demonizing, dehumanizing & criminalizing homeless folks hasn't helped at all - it is also very unkind & lacking of humanity.

Street sweeps of the homeless are just another form of taxpayers funded, state sanctioned, social murder. These inhumane actions have never worked to alleviate homelessness crisis, nor lowered crime rates, nor have they improved our community safety as a whole. People die from street sweeps. We have desperate needs for both more social & transitional supportive housing for folks living at & below poverty lines. We have desperate community needs for mental health & addictions recovery/support services to be funded better & access to services be fast-tracked. There's long waiting lists for folks seeking help & that's been an health care issue for decades - under 2 swinging door governments. There's still too much stigma & ignorant judgements towards our most marginalized citizens.

A society that chooses to judge, ignore, dehumanize & ostracize the most marginalized folks within it, is a sick society. It really does take a village of diverse kind citizens to help heal it. You can always make a small ripple of difference to help out in your own local area 🙏

  15. *My social justice activist friend, Crystal, was interviewed for this article.*

As the City of Victoria conducts what outreach workers say are deadly sweeps of Pandora Avenue, those who facilitate unhoused individuals into addiction rehabilitation centres say there’s not enough spaces to meet the needs of those who are left on the capital city’s streets.

“What I’m faced with is, where am I sending them?” said Theresa Reeve, executive director of the relatively new non-profit Westcoast Recovery Outreach.

Reeve says private treatment centres only take a select number of government-funded clients, leaving empty beds open for higher paying private clients.

“I could fill up their treatment centre if they would allow me,” said Reeve. “But they only let a few government-funded beds. We need to increase those government funded beds. These people deserve a chance just like everybody else.”

“People having to wait anywhere from two weeks to three months waiting to get into a detox bed is not acceptable. We need a better system now. We just had an election about. Where are all the beds they promised they were going to build?”

The Minister of Health told CHEK News in a statement that her government is adding new services without specifics.

  20. Most letter writers to our local newspaper, #TimesColonist are quite conservative & cruel in how they think about marginalized peoples. You rarely see compassion in TC letters published, that Mr. Chris Holiday has shown. I don't know the person but grateful locals like them exist.

"Give more respect to those unhoused
I have been appalled at the increasing level of stigmatization and hatred directed toward the unhoused population.

I live on Pandora Avenue and frequently walk by individuals suffering most severely from our province’s housing crisis. I’ve witnessed individuals in crisis and using threatening language towards passersby but I have also witnessed verbal harassment of unhoused individuals coming from the balconies of luxury apartments.

Public safety is a two-way street, everyone deserves the right to safety and dignity. A 2023 study by the Ministry of Housing reports that 67% of unhoused individuals have lived in their community for more than five years and 23% for their entire lives.

These are our neighbours, and they deserve respect just as much as us who are housed.

  25. As the struggle to put food on the table or gas in the car persists due to growing inflation, many Metro #Vancouver residents are turning to food banks and other non-profit organizations to bridge their widening financial gap.

Murray Baker, financial empowerment manager of Family Services of Greater Vancouver, says demand for the non-profit’s free financial planning services has risen nearly 50 per cent this fiscal quarter compared to last year.

#GroceryCosts stood out as a growing concern, the #Canadian Social Survey found. Twenty-three per cent of Canadians reported they were “somewhat” or “very likely” to get food or meals from community organizations over the next six months.

  26. *Related to my post from yesterday.

#BCNDP's #HousingHub program is coming under #scrutiny after one #TaxpayerSubsidized #RentalBuilding in #Vancouver's #Kitsilano neighbourhood, touted as "affordable", is now listing units for $2,600 per month for a studio & $4,200 per month for a 2 bedroom unit.

The listed #RentalPrices are well above provincial #AffordableHousing thresholds & one #housing #researcher says it's an example of how difficult it is to build #AffordableRental buildings when market prices are so far beyond what average #renters can afford.

The leader of the #BCGreenParty called it an "infuriating" #misuse of #TaxpayerDollars.

The #BCNDPgovernment provided a $31.8 million #LowInterestLoan to Vancouver developer #JamesonDevelopmentCorp. for the 68-unit rental building through the HousingHub program, which is aimed at providing housing to middle-income renters shut out of the real estate market.

#BCPremier #DavidEby, who was the minister -responsible for housing at the time, was quoted in a December 2021 government news release announcing the project.

"Our government is investing in more affordable housing for people who work and live in Vancouver, and throughout B.C." he said.

The building at 1807 Larch St., called the L2, is set to be complete next month & is now advertising units.

    According to the building's website, a 400-square foot studio apartment starts at $2,599 a month & a 840-square foot two-bedroom, two-bath unit is listed for $4,299 a month.

  27. In #VictoriaBC - you get in trouble from bylaw officers if you cook/feed the poor & houseless folks in Summer. You don't get in much trouble & usually left alone in cold, freezing weather in Winter because bylaw officers won't patrol much when conditions are miserable out. I learned that from past lived experiences when trying to cook outside to feed #hungry & #houseless folks.

I wouldn't feel the need to keep trying to feed people here if our governments, & our society as a whole, didn't treat houseless folks like they're not human & not deserving of kindness, compassion & understanding. Some of us citizens have got in trouble for trying to feed people - when the people trying to punish people like me aren't doing much to help feed & house the folks who need to be fed & housed the most.

I'm not a criminal. The heartless governments & ignorant people who #stigmatize hungry, houseless folks, while doing shit all to help out, are the real criminals in our society.

I will ALWAYS try to feed the hungry, without judgements. I hope more people will also go out to feed the hungry, without judgements. We - the grassroots citizens, who care - are local humanity in action. We need to keep trying to help folks in our own communities, as much as we can. We need to keep resisting the fascists who try to destroy our efforts.

Cruel fascists are no benefit to any community. Whether they're elected officials or not. The houseless are part of all of our communities. They don't deserve to be ignored & treated like lesser than humans.

Many of the #renters being displaced are #LowIncome, either on #disability or a #FixedPension. As a result, most of them can’t afford market rent, and fear they could be homeless.

King says what’s needed is a BC-wide #TenantAssistance #policy to better #ProtectTenants facing #displacement, but also to prevent #taxpayers from paying for the consequences down the line.
