US homelessness up 18 percent in last year amid cost of living crisis
"he number of people living in homelessness in the United States has increased by 18 percent over the last year, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) said in a new report.
Data released on Friday showed that more than 771,000 people were experiencing homelessness across the country, according to an annual count that was carried out on a single night in January 2024.
The figure — which HUD said was the highest-ever recorded — includes people staying in emergency shelters, safe havens, transitional housing, or in unsheltered locations in the US."

Despite #BCNDP saying they’ve stopped #renovictions in #BritishColumbia they’re still very much happening. After a ruling from the Residential Tenancy Branch #RTB dozens of #Esquimalt #seniors are being kicked out in four months for the new owners to do renovations.
Many of the #renters being displaced are #LowIncome, either on #disability or a #FixedPension. As a result, most of them can’t afford market rent, and fear they could be homeless.
Because the new owner is doing renovations, not a total demolition, Esquimalt’s #Tenant Assistance Policy isn’t triggered. Any stronger policy is the #BCgovernment jurisdiction.
“It’s time for the provincial government to actually stop this from happening. If they really want to stop renovictions, then they need to change the laws,” said Douglas King, executive director of #TogetherAgainstPovertySociety.
King says what’s needed is a BC-wide #TenantAssistance #policy to better #ProtectTenants facing #displacement, but also to prevent #taxpayers from paying for the consequences down the line.

At the same time, however, I want to end on an optimistic note, and watching #TippingTheVelvet reminded me that when I first saw it, #SameSexMarriage wasn't legal in the US, and it is now, even if its future is in doubt. Also, at the time, the city near where I went to college was having a referendum on #LGBTQHousing and #HousingDiscrimination, which eventually won #HousingRights for queer people. Dan Savage's #ItGetsBetter campaign was going viral.
We were fighting the bigots then, and it felt like we were winning. Now it feels like we're on the backfoot in that fight, but that doesn't mean the fight is over. We've come really far, too far to give up now, and we have the opportunity to both protect what we've won while pushing for true #justice and #equity.
